As those who have lost money in the gox fiasco know, the creditors hearing is on July 23. Being in Manila right now I consider taking the trip and showing up in person at the court for that meeting.
The questions is however whether it is worth my time + expenses. Tokyo is a very expensive city and as such I would only stay there for 2 days for the hearing and then fly right back to Manila where I live right now.
The total costs, including flight and hotel, are by my estimation around 900 Eur, which is ~4% of the money I lost in gox. That being said, I've never been to japan and know basically nothing about that country.
If you were me, would you take that flight?

So I bought myself a yubikey and I plan to use it to create a more secure version of the main QT client whereby the regular passphrase prompt is replaced with a prompt for a one-time-password (OTP) authentication provided by the yubikey. This will most likely require a custom built client. I can build QT on linux including necessary code changes. There is also a yubico c library at https://github.com/Yubico/yubico-cThe question however is this: Altough I'm somewhat familiar with the bitcoin client code, with the yubikey I'm starting at zero. What would, in your eyes, be the best way to approach this? Has anyone attempted something similar? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

It is one thing if a known drug-dealer website (s/d) is seized and your coins lost. If you had your coins there, you were just stupid! However, MtGox is one of the most reputable sites and has also been the biggest exchange, by far, for years.
Their security is (was?) superb, with customizable google-auth, keycards and yubikeys, a lot of people trusted Gox more than they would have trusted themselves with securing their own shitty home pcs. Despite being the biggest exchange, Gox have not been hacked since 2011 even though they were an obvious target. This alone made them more trustworthy.
Now with gox being consumed with internal problems, and most recently also "halting" all BTC withdrawals, placing your trust in them might have been a misjudgement. Yes, the "warning signs" were there, but in context, they were no more severe than those you heard from other BTC related exchanges. Up until june last year you could perfectly deposit and withdraw BTC and fiat (if you were European), therefore all troubles were assumed to be only temporary, and soon to be fixed. This no longer appears to be the case...
So, how many coins do you have stuck in there..?

In response to this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=174314.0 This is a hypothetical question, pure speculation...Assuming you personally received news which, without any shadow of doubt, pointed towards a large institution arranging a coordinated attack (although I highly doubt it), by first driving up the price, then crashing it massively while ddosing the exchanges, like what we just coincidentally happened to see during recent days. Would you, under these circumstances, feel any moral obligation to buy, hold, or otherwise support the community or infrastructure and if so, what would be the justification for your decision? Or would you rather scramble to get out at the nearest possible exit, before prices fall any further? ??

Maybe it's just me, but I have difficulties adjusting to these recent price changes. In my mind a BTC is still somewhere around ~$9 USD, it has been there for so long, I guess it just kinda stuck. Now I suddenly see things like 9.7BTC being sold for 1000.- USD and I thought it must have been some kind of bug..? So now we gotta calculate everything back to fiat again, just to get a somewhat accurate sense of what the value actually is?
Anyone else feel this??

Does anyone know which BTC auction site is the biggest? Besides S/R? Where do I find the most items, users, sales, etc any recommendations?
We really need to get the legitimate side of the bitcoin economy growing... .

Found in init.cpp, line 121. Soooo, what's so 'confusing' about it?

EDIT: THIS IS A FISHING ATTEMPT DO NOT FALL FOR IT (like I did )So, after not logging in on Mt Gox for a couple of weeks, suddenly, out of nowhere, I receive the following email:Dear Mt.Gox user,
Your account will be blocked for violating the rules of exchange. Details:https://www.mgtox.com/users/blocked
Thanks, The Mt.Gox team
Needless to say, I need to log in in order to access the above link, which I cannot do now. Fortunately for me, I had the foresight to not store any money on my account (less then 2 USD as far as I remember). I think this is a good example of why you shouldn't keep your money or BTC on any 3rd party sites, big or small, but rather always keep your coins on a secure device in your possession.
Have a Good Day, oOo

Just a quick question:
How do I go from here: 65f2a3921afacd998e6c98a5aaa94325ed07ee14
to here: 1AJ3vE2NNYW2Jzv3fLwyjKF1LYbZ65Ez64 ?
Things I have at my disposal to accomplish this task:
-pen, -paper, -calculator.
What do I need to do? .

EDIT: Due to time constraints, the current version of the satoshi client is no longer supported! Finally! No more "Grandma, you just need to download this weird userspace runtime script and change the network settings to enable key import..." No more "Grandma, you just have to run weird, cryptic Python scripts to access bitcoin rpc calls...", no more "Grandma, you just need to compile your client with while applying xyz patch for 64bit mode!" No more "Grandma, you must download the correct version of python, no not that one, the OTHER one!" No more "Grandma, you must copy your libraries to the user folder to prevent your computer from crashing." No more "Grandma! This is the Console, you must type your commands here, NOOO not like that! You must enter: ./crypticcommandlinetoolinterface.py -a -b -c -d -e 12345 -]¢¶|[|¶¢[]¢¶] See, it's that easy..." - Those times are finally over because I present: The Fantastic Magic Wallet Creator v0.1 - This simple tool creates a wallet.dat from a Bitcoin private key without the hassle to download and run weird and/or non-functioning command-line scripts with cryptic syntax. Just put your private key in the box on the left, click "Add key to wallet", and then save your wallet to your disk. This tool supports all standard private keys and thereby allows you to import keys as they are found in - Vanitygen - bitbills - casascius paper wallet - bitcointools - etc. How to use?Simply add your private key to the textbox (be careful, your key must by typed exactly, additional symbols or spaces will generate a wrong wallet entry), click "add to wallet" and then finally save to your bitcoin folder. It can be found under "~/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin" Once you are finished, you must run Bitcoin with the "-rescan" option. The easiest way to do this is to start the terminal.app and copy/paste "/Applications/Bitcoin.app/Contents/MacOS/bitcoin -rescan". Unfortunately there is nothing I can do here, but this will be the only place where you will have to use the command line, at least until the client has improved enough to support this by default. It will take a while to start, but your Bitcoin address and the associated funds should appear eventually. -> IMPORTANT!! If you don't read anything else, at least read this!! <-As of version 0.1 (current) the Magic Wallet Creator only adds a single address to the wallet. Although this will be improved in the future, right now you will have to spend ALL Bitcoins contained in the address at once, if you don't do this, the remainder WILL BE LOST! The best way to approach this is to write down an address of your original wallet and then send all the coins from the imported address to your real wallet. Backing up your dataI think this should be obvious, but seeing how recent recklessness has lead to the loss of many a bitcoin, I feel obliged to point this out: ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR WALLET! Since this tool will necessarily overwrite the wallet you find in the library folder, you should temporarily move that wallet out, and then, once your transactions is complete and you have enough confirmations, you quit the client, move back your original wallet.dat, and your transaction should appear there soon. Yes, this is a hassle, the ability to add keys directly to your wallet might be added in the future. Security concernsAs with all 3rd party programs, you need to be extra careful when using tools that access your wallet. You are dealing with real money here and should act accordingly. Although the source is included in the tarball, I do not expect everyone on this forum to be able to read or compile it, and even if they could, there is no guarantee the binaries you are running have not been compromised, particularly when downloading from 3rd party sites. The best way of action is to physically disconnect your mac while using this (or any non-client) tool. To do this simply click on the AirPort icon on top, and deactivate. After you're finished, you can just reactivate again. Or pull the plug if you are on LAN. That way a compromised app cannot access the network and broadcast potentially stolen keys. Additional FeaturesDepending on the reactions here, I might or might not expand the capabilities of this little tool to include functionalities such as -auto wallet backup -transaction import/export -passphrase encryption -deterministic wallet -wallet management -linux version -windows version -label editing -individual key import/export -multiple wallet support -general encryption -and many more... However, I am a hard working man working in a mind grinding 9-5 job, while I also have to support a family. Writing features takes a lot of time and I will need a lot of support! DownloadThe file can be found here: http://www.realhatred.flimex.hu/mwc.tar.gz ≈1.398.031 Byte The sauce is also in the included file. This is an xcode project with two dependencies, openssl and BerkeleyDB. You will have to install those libraries before you can compile this. How you can helpUnfortunately I am very time constrained. Besides my day job, I also have a wife and two little kids (girl and boy ) so this means that future development will be highly dependent on your support. If you like this program, please consider donating: 1DuPPqzbQY6Rosj5nk7Vmo7CHoArhdBB6U Every Bit is very appreciated! Besides this, you can also help by testing, if you have any problems, the best way to reach me is a pm on this forum. Also, if somebody could provide a mirror for this^, I will be a very happy man! Final wordsFirst of all, I'd like to thank everyone here for showing interest, besides this, my Special Thanks go to: - casascius - etotheipi - Matt Giuca Very Special Thanks go to: My wife and family for all their patience! DisclaimerAs usual, the Magic Wallet Creator comes with no warranties or guarantees. By using this, you agree that I, the author, cannot be made responsible in case of a financial, or any other kind of loss. If you like this program please donate: 1DuPPqzbQY6Rosj5nk7Vmo7CHoArhdBB6U Much appreciated! .

What is the absolute minimum amount of information that needs to be in the wallet.dat file in order to be accepted by the client?
I guess a single private key should be sufficient, but what exactly has to go into the wallet.dat file?
Can any of you devs please give me a dump (./db_dump) of the smalles possible file so I can take a look at it? Or maybe you could just post a link to your "nanowallet.dat" file in this thread. I think you should use a testnet key for this^^
Anyone?!?

Why is it necessary to utilise a new address in my wallet as a return for my change? Why is it not possible for an address to send the change back to itself?? This is headache inducing...
Is there some kind of conflict? Time delay?? What is it?
..Wait! I got more:
What happens if I used up all 100 preset receive addresses of my wallet when making a transaction? Does the client create another 100 new addresses, or just one? Or does it reuse an old one from my wallet??
Anyone?

A "thought" just shot through my mind: Seeing all these "advertisements", I quickly realized that instead of spreading the word about BTC, we should HUSH! and not speak a word about it! I'd like to quote satoshi here: WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us. Although attraction from unwanted sides is part of the picture, there is an even bigger, more important reason to keep this amongst us, at least as far as possible... The bigger reason is that a quick spread of word favors the already patronized "early adopters" even more! But not only that - early adopters are benefiting in a compounding, exponential fashion, widening the gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" even more. If the reason for this is not instantly obvious, let me explain: say you own 10 BTC for $15 each, giving you $150. An early adopter owns 1000BTC for $15 each. Now word spread and noobs start buying into BTC, making the price rise to say $20 for a coin. This situation massively favours the early guy, making him a profit of $5000 USD, while the "little guy" only earns $50 USD. Since mining and buying is equally costly/difficult for both of them, we can assume that under the condition of both players continuing to mine/buy, time will even the gap. If both manage to accumulate 1000BTC over the same period of time, the early adopter will have doubled his position (1000->2000 BTC), while the late adopter will have increased his position more than a 100-fold (10->1010 BTC). Therefore the ratios (1:100) will be more approximate (≈1.01:2 ). If we can manage to hold out for long enough, maybe we could even the playing field at least a bit. Media attention is the last thing late adopters want!.
