The president of Western Union scoffed at the invention of the telephone, calling it little more than an “electric toy,” and the company informed Alexander Graham Bell that his brainchild to place one in every home was “utterly out of the question.” A couple of years later, Oxford University professor Erasmus Wilson predicted that when the 1878 Paris Exhibition closed, the electric light would “close with it and no more will be heard of it.” When Henry Ford sought investors for his car company in 1903 a Michigan banker advised his client against it, forecasting that “the horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty.” In 1946, Darryl Zanuck, president of 20th Century Fox, said, “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

Earlier this week, the US government took its first action against the bitcoin ecosystem, freezing the US accounts of Mt. Gox, which is the largest bitcoin exchange in the world, processing 75 percent of all transactions in the last 30 days. Since that time, the questions on most people’s mind has been, what does this mean for the future of bitcoin and other virtual currencies? Is this an isolated incident based on the actions of one bitcoin exchange, or is it a harbinger of a broader offensive against the ecosystem as a whole?
243  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-05-16 For Chris Dixon the next big thing might be bitcoin on: May 17, 2013, 02:30:15 AM

At this month’s PandoMonthly in New York, Dixon, a partner at Andreessen-Horowitz, talked about the need for a diverse investment portfolio, and part of the thrill of working for such an influential venture capital firm is keeping tabs on what could be the next big thing. Dixon thinks it could be bitcoin.

BitPay, the startup with ambitions to become the PayPal of the bitcoin world, is today announcing that it has raised another $2 million. And in a kind of poetic justice, the round is led by none other than the Founders Fund, the VC started by what’s commonly called the PayPayl Mafia.

Bitcoin exchange service Mt. Gox is experiencing some issues with U.S. authorities. The Department of Homeland Security issued a seizure warrant to Dwolla for the money in Mt. Gox’s Dwolla account. Mt. Gox users can’t use Dwolla as a funding option anymore even though it was one of the most popular options. The Japanese startup failed to register in the U.S. as a money transmitting company — president and CEO Mark Karpeles now faces up to five years in prison.

249  Other / Off-topic / There is an epidemic in this community... on: May 10, 2013, 01:46:09 AM
The epidemic is how people ignore security, experience and skill for price. These 3 things go hand in hand and allow free lancer's price go up. Most people here understand that, but I have a feeling that new people don't. I think people think the lower the price, or even free, is something they are willing to risk. I have to disagree, of course cause I can see the person or people are just setting a lower price to get the job, and do it in maybe an hour or 2. I think we need to start recognizing this as a problem, this will lead to many sites getting attack and hacked. I look at so many sites, that I could easily drain 100's of coins from, of course I do the right thing and notify the admins ASAP, but people aren't that nice like me. I actually want to see sites succeed and bring bitcoins closer to a boarder community. I hope this will help people to go more with experience and skills in the community then just take a greedy price, it will be good for the short term and worst for the long term.

Seemingly every week, you come across news stories and press releases from restaurants, bars, dating sites, domain registration, and other services announcing that they have begun accepting Bitcoins. It reminds me of the early days of e-commerce, when companies would trumpet that they had a website, and mid-90s TV news anchors would stumble over the URLs, usually butchering the www part of addresses: “double-u-dub-ya-dot…”

252  Other / Off-topic / Can we get feed wrangler to accept bitcoins? on: May 05, 2013, 02:03:56 AM
So feed wrangler is a google reader, that you have to pay ~$20 and I would glad pay that but I want to do so in bitcoins.

I emailed them this
Quote
I would gladly pay for feed wrangler and move my reader account there,
but I would like to do so with the internet currency bitcoins.

You can learn more about bitcoins at http://bitcoin.org/en/ and
http://weusecoins.org.

You can also quickly add support for it with services like
http://bitpay.com or run your own system with the bitcoin software.

I hope you consider this option, as a bitcoin community member for
over 2 years I would love to see this option!

Thank you for your time.

They responded,

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, we don't plan to add that feature right now.

So yeah, this is basically a turn down... So maybe more people can email them and ask them to add it, power is with the people!

At the bottom is there email.

254  Other / Meta / Can I have all non-english boards ignored for me. on: May 04, 2013, 03:28:20 AM
Almost every week a new non-english board is either created for a language or as a sub forum in an existing language. it is annoying to keep going to the profile and blocking it every time a new one is created. If I ignore the parent forum for that language it should inherently ignore the sub-forums.

Thank you.

256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / So many issues with the bitcoin foundation, how much longer are we giving it? on: May 03, 2013, 08:07:10 AM
So now two of the board members are suing, the development team is censoring the press list and so many more acts against bitcoin. I think it is time that the foundation folds, it is literally imploding on it's self.

I personality think they can rebuild it wouldn't be easy but could be done. First order of business, cut out the development team the foundation can't work with a team of people who are power hungry. In the coming years, maybe even months I see more isolation from the development team and the community.

Second, they have to do a huge reorganization of the board structure. Gavin should hold no powers, Peter and Mark need there powers (not there membership) taken away. I think one of the biggest problems with the foundation is two many of the higher members, also own successful businesses leaving very little time for the foundation. While certain bitcoin businesses should be clearly represented in the foundation, they shouldn't hold a similar level of power. They should be included on high priority votes.

They really need to get their act together...

Last week The Pirate Bay began accepting BitCoin donations and it’s been a successful move so far. In just seven days the site has received 174 donations via BitCoin with a dollar value of $2,063. Keep that up for a year and BitCoin exchange rates aside, the site could be adding around $107,000 to its coffers. Adding to the options to donate anonymously, The Pirate Bay is now supporting a second cypto-currency called LiteCoin.
