121  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-14] Florida State Employee Arrested for Allegedly Mining Crypto at Work on: March 16, 2018, 12:17:22 AM
What a joker. If you're that dumb, you deserve to be held responsible for such actions. Not only did he increase the power bill considerably, but that fool also bought $22,000 worth of GPU's at cost of his employer. Unlawful usage of resources mostly a serious offence, and especially so within a government department. I can somewhat see the irony in people mining from universities or their daily jobs, but also committing theft is something that goes far beyond the irony aspect, and for that reason he should be punished accordingly. I wonder what they did or will do with the GPU's. If they can't return them for a full refund, that dude will surely end up paying the difference. I remember once that I tried to return a GPU bought brand new a week before attempting to return it, and the store was only willing to take it back for 50% of the initial purchasing amount. I later sold it locally, because losing 50% is too much of a hit.

The employer should be entitled to the proceeds of the mining since it was bought at the cost of the employer, if any. Whatever fruits the employee has gained from the GPUs he bought should become property of the employer because of his unlawful usage, how little it may be. The employee should be liable for any damages caused since he has used up the electricity of is department. The Department may choose to sell the GPUs to recover the unlawful cost of the employee. Of course a used GPU would have a lesser value but it may help them recover even just a portion of their lost.
122  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Does signature campaign really help to promote an ICO ? on: March 13, 2018, 11:53:39 PM
I know signature campagns exists on this forum for very log time . I was wondering , do they really help to promote ICO , i know they spend a lot of money to pay bitcointalk members to wear their singatures and make posts . Do they really make profit out of this ?

Of course they work and they're often both very effective and profitable. Half of the time I'm not even aware of 99% of these crapcoin ICOs until I see them advertised here by shitposters crapping all over the place; so yes, they're very effective. Also, often it doesn't cost them very much if anything at all. Most are paid out via tokens they've pre-mined themselves so there's no real cost to them. If you don't hire a campaign manager - which many don't - then there's no real loss at all. Many make sufficient money via their crowdsale so it's worth paying one anyway. The shameful thing is that it's counterproductive to them to have a manager who does his job because the more people posting = the more people who see their advert so it doesn't really matter about quality of posts either. This is something that should change though and they shouldn't be allowed to operate here in such a way.

This has been an issue in signature campaigns. As effective as it is for ICOs, it also contributes to most of the trash in this forum. Shitposters have been desperate to earn money and to do so, they would come up with thoughtless and content-less replies or threads. Perhaps if signature campaigns advocate for quality posters for better promotion, then this would be avoided. It should not be enough that a participant of a signature campaign is able to post numerously within the week. Of course, it can be helped when not all signature campaigns even hire a campaign manager.

If I were to see an ICO that was advertised by someone who post constructively rather than someone who says nonsense, I'd likely invest on the former.
123  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie, Jr Members, Members suffering from merit-phobia: Explanations and Advice on: March 12, 2018, 11:57:16 PM
I find this to be a little ethnocentric. I see that you're just trying to help others be able to post constructively, but this is at a disadvantage for those who grew up with a different native language. Ethnocentrism is where there is a belief that one ethic group or culture is superior to another. This is usually implied and done impassingly, as like every other racial comment. This treatment toward Eastern posters is an example of ethnocentrism.

I'm really glad you pointed out the "East vs. West" issue. This is usually dismissed because the users in this forum have their freedom of speech or to their own opinion. I won't deny it, there are in fact many shitposters coming from the East and (shamingly) from my own country. For someone who's born with a different native language other than english, it's going to be hard for them to construct sentences in the correct grammar. If they were to excel and post constructively, it's true that they may do better within their local boards which may lack sMerit sources. You see, this gives them minimal opportunity to contribute and participate in the forum if they were confined to their local boards.

Obviously, the "sir, dear" remark is a cultural barrier. This is being said by the Eastern because of their value of respect, and they do this out of habit because they got so used to it. A habit to one is offensive to another. So who should adjust here?

Perhaps this forum lacks a little cultural relativism. All cultures are worthy in their own right and are of equal value. Are the opinions of others no longer of value just because it is not properly constructed in English?

1. East vs. West
It is a common impression that most of the people spamming or shit-posting are from the low income countries in the eastern hemisphere. Indian, Indonesia, Thailand, Phillipines, Vietnam etc. To people from these countries, I'd say that its our own mistake that the west sees us as incompetent and lazy when we write incoherent sentences.
By showing our willingness to spend our time on making 1000 useless posts, we confirm that we are in fact useless. Its then natural to have disdain for such actions. Accusing the other person of racism then is no defence. If you really want to mount a defence, then do some real work and prove your worth.

This constant trend to use salutations  (Sir, Dear, Respected) is also a cultural difference. To you, it maybe normal to show respect to someone in a position of power over you, but as far as netiquette and western work culture is concerned, this is considered sycophancy/ ass-kissing. This is considered the hallmark of an incapable, scheming individual and not of respect. So avoid this like a plague. Instead, address people with a normal Mr./ Miss

124  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-12] No Legal Basis to Ban or Limit Bitcoin Mining: EU Official on: March 12, 2018, 11:35:31 PM
After China, I think Iceland is another popular area for setting up cryptocurrency mining farms. Cheap and clean electricity, apart from the cold climate which results in low cooling costs are the primary drivers.

I do largely agree, but the main point of importance is that if miners massively flow into Iceland to set up their operations, they will basically be responsible for consuming far more energy than the country currently consumes, and that within its first year alone. It's not sustainable in the long term, where if the demand for power and other resources keeps increasing, and that will definitely happen, then it will be the local non crypto economy that's going to pay the price for it. Miners will have no problems paying more for resources due to the increased demand, but that isn't the case for the locals. I expect the government to draw a line at some point, because allowing miners to enter and benefit from the great climate and cheaper resources is one thing, but having your non crypto economy pay the price for it is just not fair....

I heard that in Iceland, the consumption of electricity for mining is greater than the electricity consumption for their whole household residence. The government has not done anything for this but I think that a more sustainable and efficient way of mining should be discovered. Electricity uses up non-renewable energy and unless something will be done, mining is going to hurt the environment.

Miners are able to benefit from the cheap resources and climate of Iceland however the locals within that area may be affected badly. The price of electricity will surely get affected someday and having to pay for an increased price would be unfortunate for them especially for those who may be only low income earners.
125  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Effects of Gambling on: March 04, 2018, 05:05:29 PM
One thing OP missed about the effects of gambling is it makes a person more confident. It makes a person feel that when he achieves his goal, the more confidence he feels even if it is just on that game. Although there are negative effects like what you've mentioned but I don't think it applies to everyone. Gambling made me a better person and learned a lot from it.
Not sure in which way this gambling can build confidence as most of the time we just loses our money, but if you think that way and you really gaining that out from your gambling activity just add extra precautions, because most of the time also a lots of stress followed when we aren't lucky enough to win our bets, better to be well aware of each effects of your gambling activity.
I agree , Confidence sometimes fail specially on gambling. We can say that you are betting on the team you support but you dont make study on the enemy of your team chosen, There will be a high chance of losing your bet because gambling is the way you risk your money on a sure thing.

Confidence has only validity if the gambler is really skilled. Empty confidence, based in pure lucky will only lead to the bankruptcy. But I agree it is one of the gambling's effects when the gambler is constantly winning during a session or during few days. It's a very dangerous effect, and as was said, that can lead to bankruptcy if the gambler is blind by his confidence that end being greed.

Confidence does not depend on the skill of a gambler. It's possible for one to be confident without even knowing for sure whether they would win. Confidence is not dictated by their skill, but by the faith that they have in themselves or on what they are betting on. If a person trusts that the decision they make would ultimately win, that is confidence. Whether or not that person is skilled, they may still be confident of their decisions or bets.
126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wall Street Expert Tom Lee: Bitcoin Price Will Double By Mid-2018. on: March 04, 2018, 04:46:13 PM
What is his basis for saying so? Anyone can easily say this. Even I can say so simply that the price of bitcoin would double by mid-2018. Anyone has the freedom to speculate because no one can tell 100% accurately what would be the price of bitcoin in the future. There may be some indicators and we can make predictions from it but there may be unforeseen factors which would affect the price in the future. It's good for someone to make a statement as it would spread positivity however there is no guarantee that it would actually happen.
127  Economy / Speculation / Re: The price of Bitcoin and its further prospects on: March 04, 2018, 04:28:26 PM
For me, the price of bitcoin does not matter. Why is no one interested in the dollar price? Because we buy goods for a dollar. I am more interested in the possibility of using bitcoin in everyday life. I want to be able to buy goods for bitcoins without having to exchange for Fiat. Then we will constantly have new opportunities for earning bitcoins and the price will not matter.

It may take a long time for that to actually happen and for that to be realized. It's quite an interesting thought. If this were actually to happen, then this would be of much convenience and an advantage for those who have earned bitcoin way before it even became mainstream. People look into the USD price now because the only way for them to use their bitcoin or spend it is by converting it into fiat and the USD price would dictate its value. If goods may be bought directly with the use of bitcoin, that would be a whole different matter.
128  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What I Should Know Before i Start Trading Cryptocurrency on: March 04, 2018, 03:25:33 PM
What do I need to Know to Start Trading on Cryptocurrency? Can anyone help me?

Nowadays crypto trading is very popular, that's why I have some interest in it. is it all about HOLD or SELL?
Holding and selling is more like investing for a long time. Trading is like trading instantly and switching between coins for maximizing profit. The best thing to do is learn how the market works first. Gain information about the coins you are about to invest and check their potentiality. Try investing small before going big. Learn from your small mistakes.

There are two ways to trade. There's short term and long term. Holding and selling is a long term way to trade while in short term, you usually buy then sell within short periods of time. The thing about short trading is you would have to keep track of the prices and know when is the best time to buy and sell. Know about pumps and dumps. Also, keep updated about the different coins so that you can diversify your portfolio.
129  Economy / Economics / Re: Germany Won’t Tax Cryptocurrencies Used To Make Purchases on: March 04, 2018, 02:35:14 PM
This would be very advantageous for each crypto-user in the country. Having to pay taxes is a hassle and sometimes discouraging. It's a pain to have to pay some amount from your income which you have worked so hard to earn. Since it is now being treated as a capital gains tax, this is similar whenever you gain some revenue through stocks. That is how it is in my country and I hope that they would impose the same kind of regulation when it comes to cryptocurrencies.
130  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-04] The Next Generation of Politicians Will Be Crypto’s Biggest Advoc on: March 04, 2018, 02:09:01 PM
It's quite likely for those who will be in position in the future would have more knowledge about crypto. It can already be seen that this generation is more knowledgeable and can easily adapt to technology as compared to the older generation. It's true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks and it's going to be hard to force the older people to get around with crypto. The new and current generation may be more open towards crypto and would be more willing to learn about it.
131  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: For those who think that all ICOs are scams on: March 03, 2018, 06:26:05 AM

I agree that investing in an ICO project is a risk, but these risks can be justified in making a profit. Of course you need to be careful when choosing a project, because as we all know certain projects - scammers. Now the market has something to choose from and there are sites and groups of telegrams that simplify our search.

Not all of the time. The chance of losing your money may be greater than the chance of gaining profit. There are plenty of scams out there which makes it hard to tell which project would be good and profitable in the future. Just by looking at the current market, it can be seen that there are numerous coins that probably wouldn't prosper in the future. The same can be said with ICOs because they are too numerous and some projects are already of the same kind.
132  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Government on legalising bitcoins on: March 03, 2018, 06:23:02 AM
I strongly think that government should legalise bitcoin, because it may become a great revenue source for the goverment by imposing taxes of more than 30% and it can develop our country in so many ways.
Every trader wants Bitcoin to be legalized. Not only Bitcoin, but I heard the Blokchain technology can be used for the future by governments, because Blokchain is a such a kind system, which makes financial and technlogical stuff more easier.

Not every trader. Others would want to avoid taxes so they'd rather that the government would not get involved with cryptocurrency affairs. It's possible that on the day that the government decides to legalize bitcoin, they may impose regulations and then put taxes.

Blockchain technology should be used by the government and utilize it to develop a better system for payments within the country. The government may choose to use crypto for the better in order to improve their country.
133  Economy / Economics / Re: Banks admit they fear BTC on: March 03, 2018, 06:19:41 AM
It is just one Central Bank of a country, it has not proven anything. After all what they have been showing in their youtube video is all true and nothing exaggerated has been shown. For me it doesn't look like a video which purposely attack Bitcoin. But to me it is a video which serves as a warning for their citizens on using cryptocurrency. Looking at how the guy didn't have fiat currency which resulted for his date to pay is an embarrassing thing to see, which could be a reality in Poland where only a few business establishments are accepting Bitcoin.
Traditional banking system has been worked on for decades,it is already established, and payments from any major cards (credit/debit) and cash are accepted almost everywhere. Use of cash does not also require an internet connection. Speaking of disadvantages, bank fees can be expensive, lack of transparency on how system runs, inflation slowly can gradually destroy value of held cash. Whereas in the bitcoin world,it is a decentralized digital currency, and in the fast-pacing world of technology it makes it more convenient and comfortable to access it in any part of the world you are and transparency is there wherever you want it at the same time it's cheap to send transactions with no extra charges.

Perhaps the disadvantages which you have mentioned is precisely why banks are admitted to fear bitcoin, because where they lack is alternately where bitcoin is better. It's but normal to think of bitcoin as a threat since there's the chance that Bitcoin could revolutionize the world for payment systems. People may prefer the use of bitcoin over banks someday, and this is what would kill banks in the future.
134  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-02] $9 Million a Day Is Lost in Cryptocurrency Scams on: March 03, 2018, 05:59:47 AM
The numbers are shocking. It has only spoked about cryptocurrency scams. There are plenty more other types of scams out there, and it can be seen that with just cryptocurrencies, many have lost huge amounts of money. As cited by the article, transparency has played a part on this. This article has shown how scams are still pretty prevalent and little is being done about it since it does not lessen by the day.

To conclude, security is very important for the cryptoholder. A disadvantage of decentralization is your inability to recover what you've lost and the possibility of getting hacked. Those who don't know how take care of their own wallet or private keys are those who are most likely to fall victim of crypto scams.
135  Economy / Speculation / Re: Waiting for a bitcoin rise. on: March 02, 2018, 09:24:32 AM
Stable is good too, don't forget that it isn't crashing which is a positive in itself. While I am bullish long term on the price action for Bitcoin I don't have a date for you that it will surpass 50k. I believe it will happen this year around October but it could happen next year that time, or 5 years from now. It could also never happen which is why we must protect ourselves and our investments on a daily basis.
I really doubt it that it's going to happen anytime soon, if it ever reaches that mark, which is also unlikely. The price is influenced by a variety of reasons, it won't happen suddenly.
Although, we probably can expect a price increase in the distant future, the $19k was an outstanding achievement, but the price has been stable for the past few months, no sudden changes are due to happen any time soon.
I totally doubt this as well, but as I doubt, I always leave room for any possibilities in any scenario. I doubted the possibility of bitcoin reaching $15k last year and it passed before dropping even lower than that and we are still doing very fine than when we even started last year. We are in a market that is not predictable and even more complex to know what can ever happen, but all the same, whatever is meant to happen will happen with only time being there to tell us when it does.

Since that almost anything is possible to happen for the price of bitcoin, we should always leave some room for doubt. Even I did not expect for the price to reach as it did last December, along with other users and even some of those who have have been in the cryptospace for already a long time. The likelihood for the price to reach that amount is similar to the likelihood that it would crash because anything may happen and there's no certain guarantee that the price would go up or down. For optimistic people like me, I would like to believe that the price will continue to go up and eventually at that price.
136  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin price "drop" on: March 02, 2018, 09:09:31 AM
This is how people react:
Haha! Nice meme, you made me laugh mate. As for OP, not actually the community members are the ones who are hyping a FUD. Blame those big players in the market that has billions of dollars invested to bitcoin and they are the ones who are paying these shills to spread FUD immediately. We can't blame each member here if they are thinking its going to be the doomsday for their investment. Just learn the market and don't buy the FUD instead buy the dip.

Not only have the big players been spreading the FUD, but also those who just came in the market just when the hype has started. The meme perfectly shows the attitude of those who thought that they would gain huge profit after a few months. They initially thought that bitcoin's price would continuously go up for the upcoming months but when they saw the price go down, they got drastically depressed. After seeing the state of bitcoin, they lost faith in it and began spouting out bad comments about it and thus contributing to the FUD. They obviously don't get how the price of bitcoin performs and was blinded by the promise of immediate returns or profit.
137  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How important are ICO advisors? on: March 02, 2018, 08:01:54 AM
ICO advisors, while helpful aren't something which should force people into making an investment in a company or not. Advisors can only do so much, and in most companies they're only around for someone to get a nice paycheck, plus you don't want to have too many advisors as you're just wasting capital on too many people who are doing nothing.

They're important, though but people should know that a big name isn't everything. Everyone has had their own array of failed ventures.

Big names are what investors look into and this makes the project more attractive. It’s a marketing strategy and although looking into the credibility is more important, ICOs get advisors because it attracts more investors. Additionally, having advisors affirms that the ICO is legit because there are numerous scam ICOs these days. Advisors may have a minimal function but it definitely can be said that they are essential.
138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paypal VS Bitcoin on: March 01, 2018, 11:44:10 PM
I may not be a regular user of Paypal but if it comes to convenience - I think that Paypal is favorable over Bitcoin. More entities accept Paypal as compared to Bitcoin since it is adopted in many parts of the world. Also, there is the complication of high transaction fees and long confirmation time for Bitcoin. Although the same may be said with Paypal, I still think that Bitcoin still needs to work on those issues for it to be at par with a payment system such as Paypal.
139  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to know before the Dump? on: March 01, 2018, 11:39:33 PM
Some experienced traders who already have experience from stocks or forex trading can judge a chart and predict from the trend whether the price will go down - or possibly a dump to happen. Of course, no one can be 100% accurate as everyone is just speculating even when it comes to technical analysis. Others have tips from insiders such as when whales or people with large amounts of coin would decide to dump and this would massively affect the price and make it go down.
140  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-28] Bill Gates: I Don't Think Bitcoin's Anonymity is a Good Thing on: March 01, 2018, 11:35:02 PM
"The main feature of cryptocurrencies is anonymity and anonymity is bad because people buy drugs" - what else could we expect to hear from a man behind the OS with a ton of built-in spyware?
But it's funny to see how some people panic and think that it can crash crypto market - maybe they though that old elites, governments and corporations will embrace cryptocurrencies. Well, it's not going to happen soon, because they view cryptos and disruptors, and they will surrender only if the population will start massively adopting cryptocurrencies.

That statement is a fallacy. Anonymity =/= buying drugs.

People expect a statement like that from a well known or influential man such as Bill Gates to make the market crash or the price to go down because they have seen how when negative news come out, it would have an effect on the price. I don't think that one person, even as well known as Bill Gates, would dissuade crypto-users. They know much more and use cryptocurrencies not to buy drugs but for many other purposes.
