421  Economy / Gambling / Re: [IDEA] +EV (Positive Expected Value) P2P Raffle Games (PeerBet Style). on: January 11, 2014, 08:32:50 PM
When a "house ticket" wins a round, all value contained at that round's jackpot is rolled over to next round.

The House does not win any prize when its tickets are chosen by the system. Its role is like a dealer on poker. Players put the money in, not the House.

The House only profits the fees from 2nd round and foward. 1st round winners (gamblers) are free from charge/fees (house edge).

Theoretically, if those rules are followed (and if I'm not seriously mistaken), the raffle becomes +EV for (new) gamblers right on 2nd round because of progressive jackpot's effect.

The raffle would be +EV right from 1st round if filled by funds (16.67% as the example shown above) from previous game (4th round from last raffle game).

Quote
[...] However, after you combine both, it will still be 0 EV. [...]

Theoretically, Peerbet wouldn't have those "House Edges" because it's (almost) pure P2P.

And there's still one additional possible feature in order to make stuff more interesting as mentioned above:

Quote
d) An option to add manually some coins to 1st round jackpot would be interesting too (1st round starts +EV for all gamblers).

That could be achieved by sending some funds earned from advertising revenue.

That's the idea's summary...

423  Economy / Gambling / [IDEA] +EV (Positive Expected Value) P2P Raffle Games (PeerBet Style). on: January 11, 2014, 05:19:34 AM
Greetings!

I'm a big fan of Raffle games available out there, and the most innovative by far (IMHO) is PeerBet at the time I'm writting this.

They are the 1st known 0EV (Neutral Expected Value) and zero house edge for gamblers to play against each other.

I've got an hypothetical idea that may seem interesting in the beginning. It might give that inovation one step beyond it is today.

House tickets, additional rounds, progressive jackpots, jackpot roll overs = +EV (Positive Expected Value) Peer-to-Peer Raffle Games.

I've been testing a new "generation" prototype of raffle games in order to achieve some interesting and innovative features:

a) Limited tickets: players get better winning odds and probabilities;

b) Progressive jackpots: "house tickets" "win" the game (some times) and roll over all the current jackpot to fill next round or game. The game becomes +EV for gamblers to play. So more gamblers will come for next round (bigger pots). P.s.: House's Tickets never add funds to jackpot, they are worthless, their only remaining purpose is to roll over the current pot to next round's jackpot. House does not profit from jackpot when its tickets are chosen;

c) Jackpot rolls over: raffle creators (gamblers) might set series ("championships"?) of raffles so when one game ends a % of that jackpot from last round rolls over to 1st round of next game;

d) Additional funds: an option to add manually some coins to 1st round jackpot would be interesting too (1st round starts +EV for all gamblers).

And more:

* Always a Winner at the end of last round;

* Transparent and Cheat Proof (Provably Fair);

* Cryptographically Verifiable;

* etc.

Here goes some calculations/simulations from that conceptual idea:

Notes from that simulation:

* One game consists of 4 rounds and entry ticket price of .1 BTC;

* Payout - 85% of jackpot: to prevent someone from attempting to buy all the tickets;

* 15% roll over: to ensure that the next game starts with some value on pot;

* 4 rounds: 4th round without house tickets.

P.s. Winning/Losing Probabilities; EV (expected value); Variance and Standard Deviation => Gambler's perspective.

Advantages (HOUSE): by implementing that idea, the house gets some profits from rake (when there's some relevant scalability), some explosion of new visitors (potential gamblers and advertisers) and the 1st P2P +EV raffle game ever!

Advantages (Gamblers): +EV Games to play/gamble, bigger pots to win, profitable on the long run.

What do you think about it?

Would that possibly work?

Are there any flaws, issues or problems I did not figure out yet?

Collaborations are appreciated...

Just mention at your announcement thread that you have it and may use it if asked so.

You can also add the key ID to your signature or even sign what is written at the announcement thread.

Take a look at other's example...  Smiley
425  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Escrow list: Whitelist Ranking & Blacklist - Must view before sending your coins on: January 09, 2014, 06:46:47 AM
Gentlemen,

The list has been updated!

New criterions and score types added:

Quote
OTC#: is the member "total rating" at #bitcoin-oc web of trust data.

Reason - a long time OTC trader that did lots of deals tends to be more trustworthy.

P.s. member must send a GPG signed personal message mentioning the link to his rating page at bitcoin-otc.com in order to be verified for this criterion.

LB#: is the member score at LocalBitcoins.com.

The score will be calculated as:

Code:
Feedback score * Number of confirmed trades

Reason - a long time P2P trader that did lots of deals tends to be more trustworthy.

P.s. member must send a GPG signed personal message mentioning the link to his account profile page at localbitcoins.com in order to be verified for this criterion. Additional info: member must add his GPG fingerprint/key id as an additional profile info at localbitcoins.com in order to be verified.

New member added: Mr. gweedo

A new Warning: member The Koolio has been suspended from the list.

More to come...

Greetings!

I'm watching people suggesting escrow for a fundraising here.

Take a look at my list: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=276897.0

That may help to increase transparency using other people's coins.

Besides using (reliable/trusted) escrow (maybe more than one escrow "agent" in this case specifically) is good for the crypto coins community.

Just consider and think about it.

Cheers!

[...] I'm not claiming Neon is 100% scam, but just saying that this kind of fund raising should be forbidden in this forum, no matter it's scam or not.

I agree.

That unsafe fund raising culture started by threads and "projects" like this is getting out of control.

Ladies and Gentlemen: be aware!

I guess I'll leave the name the way it is: "escrow service". At least untill bitcoin starts getting some serious attention from governments and regulators worldwide.

1st) Raising funds before showing any white paper?

2nd) No further discussion about that project at any other thread?

3rd) Is OP a newbie?

I have a bad feeling about it... Undecided

Yeah, I have mandatory tips. Or non-optional tips. Or something like that.

You can also call us the "middle-men" if you don't like calling us "escrows".

If bitcoin is following fiat laws, then it must be considered currency. Which is good for bitcoin. Especially if the US government decides that. However, how about the rest of the world?

I completely agree that going by fiat law isn't correct for Bitcoin, but as we have seen as recently as Mike (Casascius) getting shut down, the U.S Gov is willing to overlook and imply a few things in order to be a pain in the ass. Abiding by fiat laws is partially unnecessary, however if its not a huge inconvience, its the safest way to operate without having someone knocking at your door. And if they do, you can at least say you were trying to do things legally. (That all assuming you are in the U.S)
If that word (escrow) "attracts" such "regulatory problems" for you, maybe we can adopt the word Custodian.

What do you guys think about it?

I agree!

By this time, while bitcoin is not recognised as a currency yet (by majors governments), I think we'll leave it that way: escrow.

"Middle-men" reminds me of "man-in-the-middle" (attack). And that's so bad.

BTW, besides some people might think differently, the world is a little wider than the US...

I do escrow services as well, 0% fee other than the Tx fee.

I could not find the announcement thread to your escrow service. Just found about your lending service at your signature.

As mentioned above:

Definitely, brain wallets are not for newbies!

Paper wallets are easier to manage at early learning stages.

Brain wallets are for pros!  Cool

I'd suggest that you just add those coins/projects which client/application has already been released.

If I were you, I'd dismiss everything else until further "concrete materialization".

437  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: CoinMarketCap.com - Market Cap Rankings of All Cryptocurrencies! on: December 09, 2013, 09:04:15 PM
Nice website and very informative too. Congratulations!

When we choose to rank the altcoins against the BTC price they do not seem to be properly ranked.

They still remain ranked by USD price.

Thanks!  They're ranked by marketcap not price.  When you switch to BTC, it converts the USD marketcap to BTC marketcap so they'll always be in the same order.

Sorry for my dumb question!

I was very sleepy when I wrote that...

Only at day after I noticed my stupidity. LOL

-1: Brain wallets are a way of burning money if you use weak passwords/passphrases.
- did you try to use a weak passphrase with Nxt ? Didn't you notice any warnings?
I was talking about brain wallets in general, not specifically about Nxt.
439  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: December 08, 2013, 01:08:39 PM
I have a thought: Why Nxt use brain wallet? Maybe partly a solution for PoS forging security. As we know, PoS forging need to open the account, if we use the wallet file, the hot wallet security is vital for the user and there will be a lot virus trying to steal the wallet. Any comment?
NovaCoin uses secial RPC command "walletpassphrase" to unlock wallet temporary, in memory only, for PoS mining purposes.

+1: Brain wallets can be very secure if you know how to generate VERY STRONG passphrases. You won't lose your coins once your wallet (file) is deleted.

-1: Brain wallets are a way of burning money if you use weak passwords/passphrases. You will lose your coins seconds after funding your weak protected wallet. P.s. that already happens with bitcoin users and it's a matter of time until we see that over Nxt.

i.e. Brain wallets are tools for professionals, not for amateurs.

I decided to clean up and improve the vanity account number generator mentioned before:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.msg3691750#msg3691750

This is the updated version:

Source code: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/gtq6vm1f346oqyy/Vanity.java

Compiled jar file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/f9xdycfu3w73q09/Vanity.jar

sha256sums:
4d2e1e182637c564f95fea1e8864fa2364769f42e28ed4135b99b5514a7f4f1f  Vanity.jar
3d98075c9e51c99b78f0794fc402dfbfd984f609308b53a234d1efb0f024737f  Vanity.java

To run it:
Code:
java -jar Vanity.jar

In addition to searching for accounts starting with a given prefix, now it can also search for accounts containing sequences of repeating digits. So there are three modes of operation.

Without any parameters, it will start from a random 16-character secret phrase and keep appending characters to it trying to find vanity-looking accounts:
Code:
$ java -jar Vanity.jar
Using a randomly generated secret prefix: )trT-&Ubyp+d]p`k
Generating vanity accounts...
)trT-&Ubyp+d]p`kE$[ gives account number 3333335333097075555
)trT-&Ubyp+d]p`k!)o4 gives account number 8888377001144420555
)trT-&Ubyp+d]p`k!%Bw gives account number 10713333338888888154

With a single parameter, it will use this as the secret prefix instead of a randomly generated one.
Code:
$ java -jar Vanity.jar my_secret_password
WARNING: For a given secret prefix, the passwords this program generates
are always the same. Therefore, using a strong secret prefix is crucial.
Anyone who can guess your secret prefix can use this program to also
discover your password. You have been warned.
Using a user-supplied secret prefix: my_secret_password
Generating vanity accounts...
my_secret_password861 gives account number 9999679005505533333
my_secret_password!(k^ gives account number 2111114455001119991
my_secret_password"!uE gives account number 13220066661444888887

With two parameters, it defaults to the original behavior, i.e. looking for shortest account number using the first parameter as secret prefix and the second as the account prefix.
Code:
$ java -jar Vanity.jar my_secret_password 888
Looking for the shortest account numbers beginning with 888
Generating vanity accounts...
my_secret_password#$ gives account number 8880281789351433347
my_secret_password^7 gives account number 888082872862915443
my_secret_passwordB`O gives account number 88888386812508853

To repeat the above warning once again:
For a given user-supplied secret prefix, the sequence of generated account numbers is always the same. This is in order to keep the number of characters appended to the secret prefix small. So it is extremely important that you pick up a strong secret prefix. Anybody who can guess your secret prefix can just run this program with it to arrive at your full secret phrase. This obviously doesn't apply when you let the program generate the secret phrase randomly (i.e., running it without any parameters).

Nice app. Maybe it should be listed on the original post (right at "page 1").

A brainwallet for XNT would also be interesting...

(Nxt, in my point of view, is a kind of brainwallet by itself)

Maybe some modifications and additions may be done here: https://github.com/brainwallet/brainwallet.github.com ( source code for http://www.brainwallet.org )

WARNING: BTW, Nxt users will fatally face a problem widely discussed here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=251037

i.e. weak passwords/passphrases and funds stolen subsequently.
