1101  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Bitmessages.org phishing scam targeting Blockchain users on: July 05, 2014, 07:17:48 PM
phishing wont happen if you use a proper client program that sits on your computer.

use bitcoin-core and you never have to worry about website hacking, third party thefts, social engineering exploits, scam sites, or greedy people.

please learn to use proper bitcoin software

It is hard to say! Even you are using the bitcoin core, the risk is still existing that your wallet file might be stolen. No matter what type of wallet you are using, it is your responsible to prevent such attack. You need to learn the knowledge to avoid them.
bitcoin-core has it's own potential vulnerabilities just like any other wallet program/service has.

IMO the blockchain.info web wallet is probably the best as long as you use the proper security procedures. There is an argument to even not have any email associated with your account but instead set it up to  backup your encrypted wallet to your dropbox
1102  Economy / Speculation / Re: Can you help me refute a contrarian? on: July 05, 2014, 07:09:40 PM
Keep in mind that when the price eventually hits 6 or 7 digits there will be no more "cashing out", because bitcoin will be money. Walmart will pay its suppliers in bitcoin and they will both pay their wage slaves in bitcoin who will buy things in bitcoin. The fabled stability that a certain group of degenerates dream of. Non-issue.
I would doubt that bitcoin will ever be the only/primary currency in the US. I would think that small and medium sized businesses may pay suppliers in bitcoin and some larger ones may as well but all commerce will not be done exclusively in bitcoin. The US government is one of the biggest consumers and biggest employers and it would likely never pay their contractors and employees in bitcoin
It's cheaper and faster and easier for international payments to be done in bitcoin than fiat. It's the really big ones that have the most incentive to do it, and they are also the ones that pay the least tax. Only thing people would NEED dollars for is taxes, and the US has a low tax rate.
It is generally cheaper to use bitcoin then it is to transact fiat payments at the consumer level.

It gets more complicated at the commercial level as corporations need to have the ability to "reverse" a transaction in the event of a mistake for example. Another problem with commercial international payments is the issue of being able to prove who funds were sent to. There are a couple of ways around this second issue but not so much with the first issue.

The reason why I would not be as encouraged with consumers using bitcoin for international payments is because the potential market for this is very small. There are very few transactions that go directly overseas in the US, it is probably more common in Europe but the Euro should make this just as efficient as sending a payment domestically
1103  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to best invest in bitcoins? on: July 05, 2014, 03:42:13 AM
Just buy bitcoin and holds them for years.
Bitcoin mining won't give you profit now, and it is very risky in day-trading.

Mining are still profit but it take longer time , holding bitcoin is a good idea you can invest your bitcoin on other casino as well .
The only way for mining to be potentially profitable over the long run is if the difficulty would increase at a pace slower then the pace that bitcoin increases. As far as I can see this is not the case.
1104  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tips on increasing my TRUST level on bitcointalk? on: July 05, 2014, 03:41:15 AM
You simply need to complete trades with others on the forum. You can also create a reputation thread for people to post on for when you have a successful trade.

With that being said you should really not be trying to increase your trust for the sole purpose of increasing your trust. You should simply trade as you normally would and use escrow when appropriate (it is pretty much always appropriate to use escrow)
1105  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Refurbished laptop for cold storage? on: July 05, 2014, 03:38:51 AM
As long as you never connect the Laptop to the internet in the future you should be okay. There would always be the possibility that the RNG would somehow be compromised, but I would doubt it as the refurbished laptop market is large compared to the bitcoin market.
1106  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it possible to find the IP address of a Bitcoin address? on: July 05, 2014, 03:37:16 AM
Today - no for all intensive purposes it is not possible as so many people use programs like multibit, electrum and blockchain.info that make it difficult/impossible to potentially determine where a TX came from.

Maybe 2 years ago - yes, if you were watching the network closely enough and had enough nodes then in theory you could make this determination assuming the address you are looking at sends coins to another address.
1107  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: day trading - what's the catch? on: July 05, 2014, 03:35:08 AM
Daytrading in any form, is similar to gambling imo.

Dont get me wrong, daytrading is totally different from just buy bitcoin at its low then holding on to it.

When you are doing day trading, your making multiple trades within that hour depending on your approach.

No, that's not necessarily true. To be specific, that would be "intra-day" trading. Day trading positions can take place over the course of days (plural) to be sure. I rarely make more than one trade in a day (scalping), but I do trade on the 1hr/4hr charts, so, days.

Intra-day trading is perfectly possible, on bitstamp for example its common see more than 0.4% variations when the market is sideaways, so its possible have at least small profits from day trading.

i don't think he was saying it wasn't possible. he was making a distinction between day trading and intraday trading, since a lot of people erroneously think that day traders always close positions before the end of day, and multiple times a day.
With a market that does not every technically close there really is no distinction between a day trader and an intra-day trader.
1108  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is the US press really that free? on: July 05, 2014, 03:32:44 AM
The US press is not quite as bad as it is in some places of the world like China or North Korea, but it will almost always have some kind of bias.
1109  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The NSA Is Targeting Users of Privacy Services, Leaked Code Shows on: July 05, 2014, 03:30:45 AM
Privacy services like TOR have been so widely reported by the MSM that almost everyone has likely read about and/or researched these kinds of services that this kind of database would be of little use.
1110  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who is the Speaker going to file a lawsuit with? on: July 05, 2014, 03:27:25 AM
Supreme Court? I would think they would throw out this suit, because it's political bullshit so boenher can keep his job. But 5 conservative judges might go for it. Question is, can democrats sue a republican president. the stats the media keeps showing is that Obama has issued far fewer executive orders than his predecessors.
Obama may have less executive orders, but the orders that he does issue are more far reaching and are closer to changing the law then his predecessors.
1111  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Facebook reveals news feed experiment to control emotions on: July 05, 2014, 03:26:13 AM
IMO this is really not that big of a deal. The results were that seeing more sad status updates resulted in a very small percentage increase in sad status updates by the person seeing them. I would even argue that the results are not statistically significant.

The only real "issue" is that facebook did not disclose the fact that they were doing the testing, but if they had disclosed then the results could have been compromised.
1112  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal Integrating Bitcoin soon. on: July 05, 2014, 03:22:29 AM
I HATE PAYPAL! - PAYPALSUCKS.COM[/b]

Paypal ripped me off for over $3,000 and stop a honest money flow that I built up from $10 a day to $1,000 a day within a week. They locked my account and asked for me to explain. I sent them the biggest email I ever sent and explained from the day I got my first computer up to how I was making that money.

They sent me an automated reply just saying my account is closed for good and they held $1,900 of mine for over 6 months (then they did pay me)

But In all the payments I got that week I never had a chargeback, refund request or any problems from the buyers and when my account got locked, I had hundreds of emails of people saying "I am trying to buy but your paypal is locked...are you a scammer?"

Oh that made me so damn mad (at paypal) that I sent them a very bad email and they sent the cops to my house...to make sure I was not on my way to HQ like I said I was. That was years ago and I have moved on from that but that was a million dollar Idea that only crashed because paypal did not want to work with me...while at the same time they let facebook sell poker chips (in the hold poker game) for paypal or any game credits for paypal and thats against the paypal rules too!

FUCK PAYPAL!
The sad thing is this isn't even an isolated incident. This kind of crap happens constantly.

Wow , you are selling BTC for paypal and they lock you ?

This happens. Sadly.
Receiving funds in exchange for digital goods is against the paypal tos Sad
1113  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Bitmessages.org phishing scam targeting Blockchain users on: July 05, 2014, 03:21:36 AM
i bet 1 satoshi that the OP uses bitmessages and blockchain.info. and this attack was not random, that the scammer knows that the OP uses both services and has probably had conversations with him beforehand.

this is why i hate forum polls asking:
"how much bitcoin do you have"
"what client do you use"

as these can easily lead to social engineering tricks to gather info to then exploit
You are probably correct. I don't think it was from the forum, but rather from the OP using the same email address for both services.
1114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is BitCoin faucets really worth the time? on: July 05, 2014, 03:20:38 AM
Regardless of if the chances are one in 10k or 1 in 20k, the chances of hitting the jackpot make it so unlikely that you will hit it that you are doing nothing more then wasting time on this or any other faucet.

That's how the site attract many users by saying "Sign up and win upto $200 in free Bitcoins every hour playing a simple game!" Cheesy
Even though it says "upto" I would consider this to be misleading as there is not really a reasonable chance that this would happen.

I wonder how many of those freebitco.in users realize and understand how low the chance is.
The chance to hit "10000" in 1 roll = 0.005%
The chance to hit "10000" at least once in 100 rolls = 0.49876%
The chance to hit "10000" at least once in 10000 rolls = 39.3477%
Probably very few of them and as a result they get a lot more return visitors then they really should
1115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Expedia says Bitcoin usage has exceeded expectation on: July 05, 2014, 03:19:46 AM
I booked a weeks worth of hotel days thru expedia the day they announced it. I then resupplied my bitcoin thru coinbase. I think that will be what I do all the time. Use bitcoin when I can and then replace it right after I use it. that way I help the btc grow and still keep my coins.
I think this is a great way for bitcoin enthusiasts to show companies that accepting bitcoin is a good way to increase their sales and their bottom line (profits)
1116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road Bitcoin Auction Winner Tim Draper Won't Say How Much He Paid on: July 05, 2014, 03:18:31 AM

We know from failed bids that he paid more than $675.

Can you give a link to where it says he paid more than $675 please? The only definite bid price I could find was $403 from one bidder. I could not find definite bid prices from any of the other bidders.
AFAIK there are no links to the amount of the winning bid as it has not been announced. Anyone that says otherwise is simply spreading rumors.
1117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 5 Global Problems Bitcoin’s Proof of Work Can Help Solve! on: July 05, 2014, 03:17:37 AM
1) bitcoins proof of work does not do protein folding. that would be probably a job of a protein folding altcoin, thats protocol is different then bitcoin.

2) bitcoins proof of work does not do prime numbers.. thats the job of an altcoin called primecoin
In theory ASICs could do this kind of work. I would doubt that bitcoin ASICs could do either of these as they are programmed to do a calculation to find a hash under a certain number, but the same manufacturers could make different ASICs to solve these kinds of problems.
1118  Economy / Economics / Re: What if someone wants to buy out Bitcoin on: July 05, 2014, 03:15:13 AM
Some people will not sell the coins even if they were 100K USD presently.  Whoever wanted to buy all the coins would have to have government sized wallet Tongue
This is not true. The higher the price of bitcoin, the more likely people will be to sell their coins.
The OP has a few issues with the sceanario. The miners will continue to mine new coins via block subsidies, this will make it impossible to have all of the bitcoin for several hundred years. Another issue is that once someone acquires the majority of bitcon the value of bitcoin would drop dramatically. Bitcon derrives it value from the fact that people will/do use it as a payment method/currency.

This is very true.  That's why a lot of people held off selling at $1200.  That's why they held off selling at $265.  That's why they held off selling at $33.  If you see the price rise dramatically in a short period of time some people will always try to hold out.

This is why you see run down buildings and lots in the middle of a modernized city - the land owner is holding out (usually for more financial gain).
I have spoken to a lot of people who had sold the majority of their holdings at various price points that were well under even $250. I think that anyone that was paying attention would have sold their coins well before BTC was trading at $100 as they had these coins that were were virtually nothing and all of a sudden became worth a lot
1119  Economy / Speculation / Re: This Bitfinex Credit Bubble cannot end well on: July 05, 2014, 03:12:31 AM
There's almost 29M usd swaps now on bitfinex, and to me it looks like the upward momentum has stopped. If the price ranges from 640-660 for a while with no upward movement the probability of a long squeeze is going to increase dangerously.

Quite a lot of money they are holding.

What stop them from running away or claimed hack like tradefotress did?
They make money off of trading fees and earn a portion of the interest on Swaps. Over the long term they stand to make more money off of these fees would outweigh the amount they could get away with if they were to steal the coins from their customers.

This is only true when bitcoin is still growing and market is expanding.
I would say it is true whenever trading volumes are high. There is no need for the market to expand or the price to increase.
1120  Economy / Economics / Re: Energy Consumption of the Bitcoin Network on: July 05, 2014, 03:11:43 AM
Technology stills evolving, more efficient mining hardware will appears, adding that not only Bitcoin has energy consumption problems, the rest of the world needs now alternative clean forms of energy that i believe are being researched so hard right now...

Besides, current prices are too low, some things would be different if Bitcoin goes to the thousand again...

Efficiency of mining hardware has no effect on energy consumption of the network. It only drives difficulty.
This is not true. If more efficient miners are on the network then the average energy consumption per THs on the network will be lower. As the difficulty increases, less efficient miners will take their machine offline as it will be consuming more energy then the bitcoin it produces will pay for.
