When bitcoin rises, alt coins tend to fall. This is because alts are priced against BTC, meaning that the alts aren't actually losing value, but if bitcoin spikes in price quickly, the alt's relative value (and the price it can be traded at) goes down. In other words, if you think that bitcoin is going to rise soon, it's smart practice to hedge by keeping part of your portfolio in bitcoin.
The reverse is also true to a point. When bitcoin is on a slow downtrend or bouncing around relatively stable, like it has for January, alt coins tend to go up in price. Again, it's not so much that the alt is gaining value (although it certainly could be on top of this), but rather that bitcoin is becoming less valuable relative to the alt coin, so you can buy fewer of the alt per unit of BTC.
This is one way (among several) that crypto markets different from more traditional markets: in crypto you are pretty much always at the mercy of whatever bitcoin is doing, as well as whatever your alts are doing.
Though I AM a noob, those are my general observations of BitCoin and AltCoin markets. Also interesting that as BitCoin gains wider and wider acceptance it becomes the standard that the other coins are based on and in my mind is no longer really an "alt currency" but instead it's the "reserve currency" of the Alt Currency world. At least that's how I see it.

...but the whole "global warming is a scam" idea is deeply offending to anyone who ever set a foot into a university and/or worked in research himself
Can you just feel the Arrogance from the GW pushers? The Sun is the greatest driver to Global Climate yet "Those that are smarter than us" won't refuse to acknowledge it. Like those Neck Beards at reddit who banned global warming deniers. The whole "Global Warming is Real so We Must Curtail Your Activities" is insulting to anyone who believes in Freedom. Al Gore says he believes in GW and owns a Carbon Trading Company. That should be clue enough right there to know that GW is a scam. Besides, the temp on other planets has increased yet there are no Humans or SUV's there. Wake up. You're being taken to the cleaners. Sorry about the thread hijack. This is a BitCoin thread so I won't reply about GW again.

"Batshit Crazy Right Winger"? Nice try, I voted for Bill Clinton then George Bush, then I woke up. American Politics is a scam just like Global Warming.
THAT'S just one of the many reasons why I'm in BitCoin.
I have thick skin so I can take the criticism but there will be new BitCoin fans every day from here on out. It would be good for BitCoin all of us if you would just welcome them rather than criticize them for daring to have a SLIGHTLY different viewpoint from you.
We may have taken different paths, but were all here at the same location and want the same things: Freedom from Banker and Political Oppression.

Besides - the big news in France today will be which of the president's mistresses is actually the First Lady of France.
Why, the hot young blonde one of course. Ooh la la (seriously though, I feel kind of bad for his long term girlfriend) (ha! take that Americans! Our leaders aren't married, they have *girlfriends* and *mistresses*, and we still elect them!) (it also helps that they aren't climate science deniers ) A man cheats on his wife, he'll cheat on anyone. "Climate Change" is a scam designed to separate YOU from your MONEY and FREEDOM. Funny you think France is in a better position than America when we're BOTH being lowered into the vat of boiling oil. You via the Euro, us via the Federal Reserve.

Wow I've never seen a wall that big.
I can't see it. Where and how big? On BTC-E. Is that not a wall at 900? Let me guess... Bitcoinity? It doesn't mean that it is super big just because it is steep and maxes out the graph. 500 coins is not very big. It was 1,000 a few minutes ago if you zoomed bitcoinity out. That's a laughably large wall for BTC-e, a speedbump most other places. I've traded there for a year and would say most BTC-e traders look at that, chuckle, and say, "I'll come back later." Yet the price keeps bouncing off that 900 "ceiling".
