Well clearly this is a political and economic project
But two points
One is that bitcoin is not ready for mainstream adoption. It is odd to think of currency as a software project, but we are and do, and there just is not a rich enough feature set yet to keep people from getting confused. I don't know if we are even in beta yet. So I'm not really concerned about expanding into that market yet.
The other is that I agree that bitcoin.org should pare itself back to discussions around the actual protocols and software - maybe even all the way back to a listserv, not a forum
But, I guess I'm not all that concerned. Question and answer like stack exchange sites are already springing up and well as sites like weusecoins.com -- People shouldn't have to come here to read or download anything if they don't want to anymore than people go to the paypal forums to use paypal. We are just now experiencing the first explosion of growth that will make these forums unwieldy (and brought me on board the project). Before this it made sense to have one forum where everything could be discussed. Now maybe it doesn't. But it will take time to decentralize a bit.

Seems like the marketplace is starting to attract possible scammers who want to sell lots of bitcoins! below cost! one time only!
Since there are established exchanges where it is possible buy and sell bitcoins (unlike other things listed in the marketplace forum), can we get rid of buy/sell BTC listings there?

How do you do that, if you use the bitcoin client for Max OSX?
Where can one enter the "-rescan" command?
Thanx
Mac OSX $HOME/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/ /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/bitcoin.conf https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin#MacWell let's see, you linked to the incorrect directory (unless you want to edit that config file so it always runs with rescan and an empty wiki. We can do better ) Instead of using the application icon, you need to actually go inside of it and run it from the terminal so you can enter a command line argument. 1) Open a terminal 2) Go to Applications/Bitcoin.app/Contents/MacOS/ (if you didn't know that you could step into apps, now you do) 3) now type ./bitcoin -rescan Bitcoin should open up and rescan the block chain for your transactions

it's weird to me that it sounds more like a sales pitch for a motivational speaker conference than an open source con/camp.
eh, whatever, maybe just personal tastes. Hope that lots of productive meetups and codesprints occur!

yes I think we all hope that many leaking sites emerge and not all of them are led by charismatic dictators with a thing for getting press. that being said, wikileaks has already done a lot of good and will continue to do so in the future I have faith in that.

Sorry if there is a feature request area and I missed it. (Maybe even one with up/down votes)
Might be nice to set an arbitrary limit where you have to confirm a transaction. ie; I set if any transaction is above 1 BTC I get a popup that says "Are you sure you want to send 1 BTC to address xxxxxxx?" (Someone else may want to set it at 10). Seems fairly easy to implement (for someone, not for me) and could save a lot of headaches for irreversible transactions.

only 20 donations so far?
come on people. put your money where your freedom is.

The CPU/memory/disk load is actually quite minimal. Something else is wrong.
Really? Having hundreds/thousands of simultaneous users browsing a forum usually results in a pretty substantial number of requests. In any case, APC wouldn't hurt if it isn't already installed.

awesome, let's take up a donation to upgrade the damn RAM or get on a dedicated box. Should probably also get memcache and/or APC setup.

Fear inciting hate mongers like you are the reason the housing market crashed. If you wan't to incite a panic go somewhere else.
LOL. Pretty sure the housing market had some pretty basic fundamental reasons it crashed (and has further to fall) than someone crying Sell!

This is great! Love it! Enough to suggest that it be built right into clients.

are we even on a VPS or just commodity hosting? What about moving to the cloud?

yes, i think when a p2p currency hits cellphones in the developing world, it will be a Really Big Deal. Cell phone minutes (and cards) are often used as currency in parts of Africa (ie; Zimbabwe) and money can already be sent by SMS (ie; M-Pesa in Kenya and elsewhere). In some ways this is much more advanced than even the US, etc (sure you can use paypal, etc from your smartphone, but can you text a few bucks to your bartender for a beer? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-PesaThe digital divide is starting to be bridged, but it will happen with mobile phones, which are now ubiquitous around the world not with FIOS to your door.

nice to see there are a fair amount of classical anarchists (libertarian socialists) and socialists here. (Spare me the handwringing about the gulag and the politburo please, as you conveniently missed the libertarian part of libertarian socialism). I guess I'm a communist on the small scale, but for the purposes of larger scale interactions and sociopolitical systems I'm somewhere around the mutualism camp. I believe that the individualist/collectivist cleavage that has always been around in anarchist thought is not insurmountable, but I do believe far far too many "libertarians" or "anarcho-capitalists" don't do near enough critiquing of the status quo outside of the violence that the tax man uses to steal their buckets, I mean duckets. I am much more interested about building new structures within the cracks of the old and exploring mutual aid/non-hierarchical/consent in the context of building new organizations and communities and spaces where people have the ability to explore what the actually want their world to look like.

Just use a Linux OS when it comes to Bitcoin, gentlemen. Windows is not for finances.
If BTC adoption is tied to Linux adoption we're all doomed

You can also get switches that automatically ping device and hard reset if ping doesn't respond. Will try to find some and post them.

The damage has been done. I hold some regrets but I wish there was a way to place your posts in the more recent part of the thread. If that was possible, there would be none.
I apologize.
Just split out the relevant posts. I'm not even sure what this catchall thread is supposed to be for anymore.

You can try, but it's generally saver to use crossfire, due to bios or driver problems that might arise otherwise, and running several different cards is generally a very rarely used approach, so finding support (online or official) would be limited too.
errr, most miners do not use crossfire, even when they are running multiple identical cards. many miners are running multiple cards from multiple vendors in the same rig. It works just fine.
