1001  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5830 x 4 Mining Rig, When to call it quits? on: June 30, 2011, 12:45:36 AM
I wouldn't quit before costs exceed profits. but you can't know in advance when/if that happens because price of bitcoins can double in several months and future difficulty rises % are unknown..

your electricity cost is pretty low, here in europe we pay 2-3 times as much in some countries - so you have a big advantage compared to miners with much higher electricity bills for same results

Hey guys, I've been mining 24x7 for the last month and a half at about ~ 1207.00 MH/s with 4 x5830's and an 850Watt Supply.  My power cost here is 8.5 cents/kWh.  With these inevitable complexity increases when do you think I should call it quits?
1002  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What would you ideally like to be able to buy with bitcoins on: June 29, 2011, 10:50:34 PM
computer hardware, software, toys, gadgets, games, music, movies, books, websites subscriptions, apparel, tickets, .... Smiley
1003  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New to Bitcoins, having trouble getting them. on: June 29, 2011, 10:41:32 PM
you can try to purchase them directly here on forum in the Marketplace/Currency exchange section

also there is a bitcoin-otc channel on irc where you can post your offers

but be careful there are also scammers around. many people don't want to trade with someone without some track record and positive rating so its not so easy to find someone willing to sell you bitcoins directly. not impossible though
1004  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracked Passwords List Leaked, were you cracked? on: June 29, 2011, 08:10:21 PM
yes, my password was cracked but i was just testing mtgox with no intention of trading at that time, so it was very weak.
1005  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Signing up:tradehill and bitcoin7 ... give me a good reason to use your ref code on: June 29, 2011, 07:42:53 PM
just diversify.. do not put all eggs [bitcoins] in one basket Wink

i could give you my tradehill refcode + 50% of ref commission back to you [but there would be your trading volume identification problem], but the reward is very low just 0.054 % of your trading volume for person who reffers you..

1006  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need Help please on: June 29, 2011, 07:15:26 PM

1007  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: miners wont run on: June 29, 2011, 06:57:56 PM
you can also have a look at this thread about RPC miners. (for cpu mining you can use: 4WAY and CPU)

1009  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: All that "waste" of computing power... on: June 28, 2011, 08:42:52 PM
It'd be neat if the proof-of-work system could be made useful (besides supporting the bitcoin system) by working on real world applications like protein folding/genome decoding, etc, rather than just looking for hashes... although it can't be easy to come up with something that has the same probability profile, controllable difficulty, security, etc

many people were folding or crunching for world community grid/boinc projects before they learned about bitcoin mining. I was also folding, even though my computing power is small (i plan to get some powerful hardware as soon as i get some decent money..)

I will come back to distributed computing in the future..

mining as a waste of computing pover? maybe. but i hope that all this demand for powerful hardware can encourage manufacturers to develop much more powerful and efficient CPUs and GPUs faster.

I haven't turned one of my very old computers off for more than 2 years and its still working fine Grin  (even though its not mining but used as a server) but imo well cooled mining computer shouldn't have problems and if it heats too much it will shut down automaticaly.
1015  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: all my coins gone today, sucks on: June 21, 2011, 06:45:30 AM
I wish I had never left my money on mybitcoin... Used the same password as my mtgox... Stupid? Yes, very stupid.

I won't divulge the exact amount, but it was pretty substantial as I am one (was one?) of the early adopters. Happened at 10AM this morning, coins went to this address: 1MAazCWMydsQB5ynYXqSGQDjNQMN3HFmEu

Sad

Anyone else in the same boat? Just looking for some people to commiserate with...

fortunately I had no bitcoins on mybitcoin at that time but i did the same stupid password mistake as you did..

regarding address above there were many transactions to and from it coming in short time span-you were not alone:

# Received transactions: 566
# Received BTC: 4 019.42939378
# Sent transactions: 551
# Sent BTC: 4 018.86860129

1017  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Futures market for bitcoins on: June 20, 2011, 04:29:42 PM
FYI, I'm working on a real futures contracts exchange. It's in the stage of active development, but takes time. I will post the progress occasionally on the forum. Also testers will be needed to test the market. If anyone is interested - please let me know.

hi
that sounds good.

will it be leveraged?+ shorting possibility?
i think i can test but it depend on how much i would have to invest ..

Due to the recent events at MTGox.com, we at Britcoin have decided to move our servers to a new location. MTGox suffered an SQL injection which means access to the site's funds were in the hands of the malicious hacker. As such, until we see evidence to the contrary, for security reasons we are assuming that MTGox has none of it's client's bitcoins. For this reason, we have withdrawn their access to our servers and the sensitive information on those servers. While our servers were separate, we were purchasing server space from MagicalTux, the owner/operator of MTGox. We have already moved all our customer bitcoins to a wallet which has newly been created and has the highest measure of security possible. The GBP deposits of course are still safe in our business bank account as well. We will put Britcoin up again as soon as possible, but only once we are confident we have the highest level of security our users deserve.

my question is: why?
