21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Peter Todd calls dash snake oil. on: July 20, 2015, 03:34:36 AM

A viewkey is not remotely a substitute for transparency. In fact it's an example of exactly the design cludge I'm talking about since it's a compromise between transparency and privacy - without enhancing either.

What are you talking about--I can let people view my transactions with a viewkey, so the tax man is satisfied which all the transparency I need. Never mind that Smooth just corrected all your misconceptions. But keep on harping about it while you shilling your snake oil. I've got the money I want.

You're wasting your time. Let's recall toknormal is the guy that said "Cryptography has never been a significant part of cryptocurrency - even though it may share the first few letters." -- nicely cached by Google for everyone to see.

Zero technical knowledge. He's simply stringing words together that he doesn't understand in an attempt to sound smart. You would have a deeper conversation with a chatbot.
22  Economy / Economics / Re: Why on this earth most of the post only related to Greece Crisis ? on: July 04, 2015, 06:21:58 AM

Obviously buying bitcoin now in Greece won't do any good to those citizens. The price and the future of euro cannot be predicted either as of now. What is really funny is people saying bitcoin can save Greece now, when there is nothing much left to be saved.

That's not true. They've only lost a mere 25% of their GDP. There's still the other 75% that can be saved. Wink

Of course, it will be devaluation and not Bitcoin that will do the saving.

i have a question: after reading some, it feels to me that the random number generators used in monero could be its weakest point.

What are you referring to specifically? The use of the AES cipher?

It's that South African accent. Tongue
25  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Casualty List on: June 04, 2015, 02:46:56 PM
The list is huge, it would be cool to see an altcoin thread like this also.
The server that hosts bitcointalk.org would go down from flood from the huge list of names that would be. There are probably more than 1000 altcoins that have died at this point, literally.

Sounds about right. There are 627 listed on a website (coinmarketcap.com) and the trading volume for most is a rounding error. >1000 dead is likely.

So what Is your Plan if Polo get hacked?  Huh
Any idea?  Embarrassed

Poloniex already was hacked. They socialized the loss and then paid back losses over several months. It was in fact a lot thanks to XMR that they made enough money through fees to refund users as quickly as they did. It wasn't really a big deal, and I think it won't be even if it happens again. That's what cold storage is for.

What if a significant number of coins get in pirate Hand?
The Hacker could dump monero into oblivion

You're right. There's only one solution: you should preempt this future hacker by dumping your Monero now. Get out before it's too late.
27  Economy / Economics / Re: Technological unemployment is (almost) here on: May 26, 2015, 06:08:34 PM
Again, are you seriously going to tell to the average 45 year old guy with a family that has been working on factories for life to "man up and become a creative entrepeneur?" Jesus fucking Christ, do you live on a bubble?

Entrepreneurship as a solution is bogus anyway. Thanks to economies of scale, we only need a handful of successful businesses for any particular good or service. That's the inevitable steady state. What will the other 99% do? Will each and every person operate successfully in a niche? No, because only a few ideas (relative to the total set of money-making ideas) are viable as a primary source of income.

http://www.ny.frb.org/newsevents/speeches/2015/mca150508.html

A speech from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York discussing the pitfalls of eliminating cash, which is an idea that's becoming more and more popular among economists (because they want to force negative interest rates). From the speech:

Quote
Until there are equally secure electronic means of providing that anonymity, eliminating currency is not warranted.

It already exists. Cheesy

Will a per-kb transaction fee result in overly high transaction fees over time? Question raised on reddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/35azxk/screw_the_hard_limit_lets_change_the_block_size/cr39v39?context=3

Per-kb isn't really the issue. The impact of any defined fee structure will drift over time away from what was intended as exchange rates and purchasing power change. There's no way around this without some way to dynamically set the fee based on current value and nothing satisfactory exists in that domain.

Here is a link to an excellent article on BTC in Argentina, a place where govt corruption and banking bullshit make Bitcoin attractive.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/magazine/how-bitcoin-is-disrupting-argentinas-economy.html?smid=tw-share

I went to Argentina a few years ago with little cash, blissfully unaware that their country's government thinks it can dictate exchange rates by decree (without buying/selling on the market using forex reserves).

Every time I withdrew from the ATM or used a credit card, I lost ~40% of my value. Tongue It was one of the reasons I got interested in crypto.

For all intensive purposes...
Sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine.  What you should say instead is "for all intents and purposes..."

This is unfair to the rare person who really was talking about the subset of purposes that are intensive.
32  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: April 13, 2015, 12:02:09 AM
I really like Monero blocks being 1 min, I dont understand what it means negatively for mining but for the end user it means its fast! That being said I would not care if it was changed to a more "optimal" 2 or 3 min (with emission accordingly).

The perceived speed is just psychological since a 1 minute confirmation is worth half as much as a 2 minute confirmation for establishing consensus.
33  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC is like a subprime bubble on: April 12, 2015, 05:25:06 PM
Last I checked, there are no bogus credit ratings or loss-socializing regulations that hide Bitcoin's risk. It floats freely on the market.

Someone's bitter about buying high.

primer- I was wondering why are you always so hostile, and use such coarse language towards most posters? (others are hostile too, sure..)

Simple answer

Thus cyber-trolling appears to be an Internet manifestation of everyday sadism.

Indeed, it's so consistent he's almost certain to have a severe real-life personality disorder. Thus I'm confused between contempt and pity.

chainradar seems to be doing more of an educated guess, it kinda gets it right. so let's figure out why and how to avoid it

If the ring signature involves n outputs, then you can guess with 1/n probability -- no fancy analysis needed. Try your tests with higher mixin and see how often it gets it right. Over enough tests it should converge to 1/n. Basically, chainradar is just bullshitting but it looks like it succeeds occasionally because its random guess lands on the right one. Dart-throwing monkeys can pull off the very same.

For additional entertainment, read BlockaFett's cringeworthy attempts to understand what cryptography even is in the XMR v. DRK thread. But being way out of his depth on a subject is no barrier for a guy with no self-awareness.

this is by far the most popular thread. all eyes on us Cool

4 of the top 5 involve Monero. Tongue

1. [XMR] Monero Speculation
2. XMR vs DRK
3. Bitstake hired Satoshi Nakamoto as Lead Developer?
4. Crypto Kingdom - 1991 Retro Virtual World(City)
5. stay away from monero

G2M is correct. If you're able to do two-way mapping of hash functions, then everybody is collectively screwed independent of XMR v. DRK or on-chain v. off-chain.
