621  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 07:33:21 AM
I have a sizeable amount of coins I bought at all prices. I will promise you this I will dump them if these changes keep being made. I couldn't care less about the mistakes in the first few days. Every coin goes through issues. And those who got them early and want to cash out will. Is that some sort of a revelation??? I'm dumbfounded that this is even being seriously considered.

I love this coin technologically but the dev's enthusiasm for fundamental distribution changes is highly problematic. And somewhat ironic. Why does cryptocurrency even exist? Because central banks and governments arbitrarily mess with money supply. But that's exactly what's happening here. I'm not even as libertarian as most people here, let alone Austrain or anarchist, but I just don't like this. Just finalize it. Please. Announce and stick to your word.

50% of the coins are mined in the first 48H. Hard dumping is comming on Sad .
You're a little late. That already happened. And happened again when a hacker stole BTC on some exchange and then bought and dumped DRK as a medium. This is all in the past except to some newbies and concern trolls.
623  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 07, 2014, 06:47:37 AM
High volume of dumping on Cryptsy just now. I'll bet all my DRK that it was the mere mention of the word airdrop. Jesus, I can't believe this has even come up.

That's exactly it. That's also the reason I went into the safe and pulled my paperwallets and have them sent to the exchanges. The second this is greenlighted for a go on the airdrop, I am dumping 5 figures worth. I'm really hoping Evan comes to his senses about this.

Lol, investor confidence used to be an abstract phrase to me. But right now I can feel my own seeping out. Evan needs to comment ASAP.

If the coin delivers technologically, neither the name nor the first 24 hours will be an issue. A name change can be still be seriously considered. An airdrop, though, would be devastating. Questions/issues to consider:

1) There have been some altcoins that have done a free perfectly even giveaway as the mode of distribution rather than mining (in the name of fairness). None have amounted to anything. What happens is that a bunch of people sign up who have no actual interest in the coin because it's "free". They'll dump at first chance. It won't net much BTC since everyone else is doing it too, but hey, it was free in the first place so they lost nothing and got a few satoshis. False identities exacerbate this but it holds even if only unique holders get the free coins.

2) A lot of cryptos have incredibly skewed distributions and it hasn't harmed them. BTC was mined for 1+ year by just a few people simply because few knew about the concept itself. It's hard to say where those coins are. LTC has 6+ million out of 25 million held in just 2 wallets of unknown origin. We don't know what happened to the coins mined in DRK's first 24 hours but chances are that most are in lost wallets or dumped in exchanges when the price was low since there's no sign of problems yet. To be honest, this coin looked like a complete mess in the first few dozen pages of this thread. Had I been there, I myself would probably have deleted/dumped and moved on to something else. This is my personal reason for not worrying about his issue. Those coins probably got tossed around and distributed or lost forever, contributing to scarcity. Win.

3) A rapid sudden supply shock will kill price and scarcity, which is very unfair to those of us who got most of our DRK from the fiat -> BTC -> buy DRK route. Money in the bank gone for simply nothing. That too is a fairness issue just as much as the initial distribution, if not more so. A few people getting lucky unintentionally isn't as bad as many people getting screwed over intentionally. I bought a lot of DRK with my own money and right now I'm genuinely afraid due to this airdrop talk (see point 2). I'll be honest: out of self-interest, I'll rush to an exchange and liquidate immediately if an airdrop plan is confirmed. It's the rational choice, even for a believer who intends to buy back. But if everyone thinks that way, goodbye DRK.

tl;dr Fix the name if enough people complain but messing with the supply especially in a rapid manner is extremely dangerous. An airdrop with USD would be considered economically-illiterate "Occupy Wall Street"-type nonsense in the real world and it's no different for cryptos. Free markets are all about incentives and self-interest.

Make DarkSend work and the users will come. I remember you yourself said at some point that you wanted a second-place coin (to BTC). DRK simply isn't meant to be a mainstream coin so things like distribution and branding are a distant second to technology.

Not sure what all you people are talking about with regards to profitability. I just did a calculation and for me it came out to ~0.017 BTC/day for DRK @ 8.8 MH/s vs. ~0.017 BTC/day for top scrypts @ 2.5 MH/s. This is at the current DRK price of 0.00125 and with free electricity (which I do have; if you don't then DRK wins by a wide margin).

Cryptsy depth graph at the moment. Just wow. Armageddon out there.

So my interview with Simone Brunozzi, Cheif Technologist of VMWare just went live, Enjoy:

Nice. I like knowing who the developer is (ironic for an anonymous coin) unlike Peercoin and Bitcoin. It's like knowing who's running that startup you invested in as a VC.

What's up with Coinmine? The miners I have setup for DRK are continually waiting for work. Losing precious mining time.
It has a backup stratum. Set up a failover.

1) user / not updated to wallet v.0.9.0 --> i think no problem.
2) exchage /  not updated to wallet v.0.9.0 --> disaster
3) pool / not updated to wallet v.0.9.0 --> no coin

am i right ?

Yep, except in the case of 1), you shouldn't perform any sends. The person receiving isn't really getting anything recognized by the network.

Mac OS X Client 0.9 update available:

Donations: XxR1ixRziVcAxoSgjkaRvNJtu4jSYHgnkj

Thank you!

As promised I have sent a small donation your way…

Many, many thanks.

Hi child_harold, thank you very much for your donation.

It's extremely rare that I receive some, it would help enormously if most Darkcoin Mac users would consider sending even just 1 DRK.

Thanks for your work. I just sent 5 DRK. You'll have to excuse me and my grad student salary for not sparing more. Tongue
632  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | No Premine | Hard Fork At 34140 (DGW) on: March 15, 2014, 07:49:46 PM
Already darkcoin forks popping up, if darkcoin wants to be a success there has to be more innovation ^^.

More innovation? You mean like the DGW, that was implemented literally a few minutes ago?

DarkCoin "forks" popping up that don't contain DGW or DarkSend....

More like Litecoin forks with scientific hashing.  Cheesy

AS i sayd, i think darkcoin took a great track, but it has to sustain. There is a very good reason im here now Wink, and its the only alt crypto i ever recognized as worth my time .

Continuously adding features repeatedly forks the blockchain. This only makes sense when the user base is tiny. At some point, the features are settled. Also, if features were the only thing determining the success of a coin, Bitcoin would be dead. The only reason DRK may amount to something is because it addresses a fundamental need (anonymity) directly related to the main function (exchange medium). All these coins adding gimmicks aren't going anywhere because a currency just needs to be a currency (again, just look at BTC's dominance).

Not sure whats happening with the price but there is only good news and developement going on with this coin + it has a really good and unique feature.

There is obviously a bot on cryptsy but how can/could it drive the price down when everyone sees its automated.
All altcoins are going downhill at the moment. Wait 3 months and draw a trend line.

Dang, we could really use simultaneous OSX releases. I'm basically in limbo. How does instacash do it? Is there a guide?

Uhh, far as I can tell by reading the thread SuchPool was the last major pool to patch this issue. Lotterymining, Coinmine, and the official pool have been OK for a couple of days now.

Haters gon' hate!

I was giggling when I saw the post (I think they missed the previous posts and didn't realize there was a problem until the developers contacted them)  But I wasn't going to say anything.

But then my husband made a comment that made me laugh really hard.  And Suchpool, I really don't mean this about you, but if you go back a week or so, there was a poster, who apparently posts everywhere as if he knows everything, and another member who identified the guy as having this ... syndrome or something.  I forgot the name, but basically it's when a person has the illusion of competence

I figure 90% of the guys I used to work with had this syndrome, ROFL

ah, it's the Dunning–Kruger effect!  ROFL, I'm sure ALL of you have worked with one of these types!
There are many kinds of illusory superiority: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_superiority

The one I mentioned is Dunning-Kruger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

edit: Whoops, you did remember. Cheesy

DarkSend question:

After a DarkSend, the change is sent back to a hidden change address to which I own the private key, but no one knows it's mine. But what if I later had to send an amount large enough that my wallet is forced to source it from multiple addresses including this change address? This could then reveal that the original sender address and the change address are connected. With the change amount known, the sent amount is also known and the recipient can be guessed more easily. Is this correct?

Coinmarketcap position #13 with non-mineable filtered out and #17 with them + Ripple included... nice  Cool

Bad, bad day for Vertcoin and Megacoin. By the way, I wish they'd let us choose which non-mineables to keep. I want to throw out Ripple and Mastercoin but keep Counterparty and Nxt.

Brutal market. Anyone remember the good ol' days when the future still looked hopeful? Cheesy

I'm down ~14% but I'll never give up my altcoins!

Can you give me instructions how to help him through?
Thnx.
But where did you get this .dmg file? Look at instacash's post (the second in this thread). There's a zip file to download and it opens into a .app file.
I send my friend the link that appears on the Darkcoin website-
MAC OSX Wallet - v0.8.9.0 thanks to instacash

The link points to a .dmg file...
http://www.darkcoin.io/downloads/DarkCoin-MacOSX.dmg

That's outdated. This post has v0.8.9.2: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg4585071#msg4585071

Hi Guys,

One of my friends whom i encouraged to install the darkcoin wallet has a Mac.
He got this message when trying to install (link to screenshot):

This means download got corrupted for some reason. The solution should be re-downloading but it seems you've already tried that.

But where did you get this .dmg file? Look at instacash's post (the second in this thread). There's a zip file to download and it opens into a .app file. Just place that in your application folder and you're done. No need to load any disk images.
