A short document on VeriCoin I produced. Please direct discussion to the reddit thread.

http://www.reddit.com/r/vericoin/comments/2bop8l/comments_on_vericoin_from_an_academic_economist/

Hope it is of some interest.

Tom first off congrats on cutting through the garbage on here and not being scared away, secondly probably one of the most useful and well written analysis' to date

also I was saying the regulatory/licensing portion is impossible without massive fiat reserves, not the coding portion

The original scope of the implementation requiring FINCen licensing is not feasible at this stage I agree.

There are however, other ways to provide VRC in exchange for FIAT within the wallet without using Moolah or any other exchange directly.

If you could accept credit card payments within the wallet, VRC could be purchased from a 'fund' (Verifund perhaps?) at a close approximation of the current exchange rate minus a small processing fee, and the FIAT from the credit transaction could then be used to later purchase more VRC from an exchange to keep the fund 'topped up'.

Now I'm not an expert in finance or law by any means, but I don't believe that this would require FINCen licensing like Cryptsy has.

hmmmm im not sure im not a lawyer but if this is feasible then perhaps its worth taking a look at but yes chargebacks would be a major concern

They would be, and without verification it would almost certainly result in a lot of chargebacks which you would not be able to win. With verification however, disputing the chargeback claim would be a piece of cake.

further incentive for VERIfication then? you only get Fiat/wallet Credit/debit card purchasing enabled if you get VERIfied? that could work but the implementation of such is beyond me I am not a coder

You've heard of credit card fraud before... right?

There are ways to prevent this, as has been already mentioned above, verification is the key.
You've got to be kidding me.  Bring your 3-tier verification processes.  You're still going to get defrauded if you allow crypto purchases with credit cards - period.  If you don't understand this, then you're just being ignorant.

But please, prove me wrong... (hint: you can't, I'm just going to enjoy watching you fail if you try)

well im not here to teach you about creditcard merchant and banking technologies so if that is your view then what can i say but, you are welcome to your opinion. keep saying it's impossible, you'll believe it eventually. experienced point of sale and financial sector worker here who's worked in rooms with millions of dollars sitting next to me in cash.. but hey what do i know. if you try any creditcard fraud though via my implementation, you'll find cops at your door no matter what country u live in.

why didn't you take the money and run? lol j/k

hhahah that joke ive heard so many times by basically everyone that's been in one of these rooms lol

lol ya wouldn't get far I assume, but hey glad you are here with us

*sigh* this is a dead horse that will never stop getting beaten the "proper fiat/wallet purchase implementation" that you speak of is, at this moment, IMPOSSIBLE to achieve since it requires SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND AMERICAN DOLLARS to get LICENSED by FINCen to enable this. SOOOO either drop it or cough up the couple hundred thousand dollars needed to achieve this....

As for the new website, it's coming dude just chill out. Three guys with day jobs and families/lives can't do everything you want when you want it. I wonder how many Bitcoin adopters were screaming about direct FIAT/wallet purchasing and a new BTC website three months or so after it was released...oh wait here we are about 5 yrs down the road and BTC STILL DOES NOT have the fiat/wallet feature? hmmmmmmmm they are obviously a scam with devs that dont care and want to drive the price down then...... Roll Eyes

just came the thread to input what i consider is my very long overdue 2 cents.

contrary to what others may have said i support vericoin's move to roll back the blockchain as this was indeed the wisest move to protect the value of their coin from predators given the situation. if you notice the comments from competitor coins who experienced the same issue with having a large amount of their investment stolen. resulted in a crash in their markets and will most likely be unrecoverable. Doge is dead the doge is dead. i know, because i knew the minute the news was published about a large amount coins getting hacked off moolah servers that the price was going to suffer very badly and sold all my doge and never reinvested hoping for an uptrend. this turned out to be indeed a wise decision. as i knew the thieves would simply seek to cashout their ill-gotten gains on the markets. i bet they are smiling from ear to ear now. and we can see that others who speak against the rolling back of the blockchain can only suffer themselves when in their mind they are really saying "why didnt we think of that?". i think the answer to that question is.. "you didnt have the balls to do what needed to be done!"

this community should keep it's confidence in vericoin. very good team of devs you have, great delivery and marketing. so dont let competitors fud you away from a good investment while their coins are floundering in the dust. i am formally providing my approval for the move made to re-establish blockchain and investor security in light of what happened. which is a failing on mintpal's part imho. but they should have gotten back their coins and trading can continue as normal.

my 2 cents,
Coinler

Veri well put, in fact I stay away from other certain coins because of how toxic their community is I.e the FUDers that come here and try to destabilize Vericoin and promote whatever coin they are invested in

I've used VRC for several purchases recently I bought my step son a new headset for his xbox and bought myself a VRC T shirt and Hat.

Oh and I used VRC because I am trying to promote growth in use as a currency and need to practice what I preach

Guys, just remember that the NewYork regulations might apply to more states with their copy/pasting. So if Doug wrote that he has an idea for making a better anon solution, then that should be included aswell and not tossed out the window.

I think anon is all the rage right now because the crypto community has this gut feeling that the regulations against crypto will be getting more strict with time, and they might be right.

But I love the VeriFied idea aswell.

Develop all these ideas as modules. Let the user plug in whatever they want. That's what we want out here, choices, not arguments about what is better, give us the choice to chose how the coin works for us. That's your "Holy Grail"

What are you talking about? If it has been coded, it should be included automatically. Having the user plug it in himself won't make VRC easier to use. And ease of use is important for VRC because it will be aiming at a broader group of demographics.

but they can be just like the current Verisend feature OPTIONAL to use as in YOU DONT HAVE TO USE IT regardless of if it is integrated into the wallet

I'm not sure how many times we need to say this, but we were aiming to make a direct CC FIAT/VRC system however due to the fact that we are all in the USA and require FINCED compliance as well as other legal compliance we couldn't do that.

Don't sit on this just thinking it's too hard to pull off (not suggesting you are...). Get the ball rolling now and knock out the obstacles as they come, even slowly will do. It'll get done and be a huge feature. The masses need this to be as simple as possible,

FINCen compliance requires MASSIVE amounts of $$$ do you have a few hundred thousand US dollars lying around to permit the FINCen compliance?

of course you could decide to be verified or not it wouldnt really work any other way
497  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VRC] | VeriCoin | POS - NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS on: July 25, 2014, 12:19:04 PM
Here is a referral program crypto. I doubt you can gain anything from it, as it is horribly run, but others are doing this idea with referrals.

The coin is called Latium if anyone is trying to see how other cryptos do referral.

THat refferal programme not working greatly, I saw some complaint about them.

Yes I've seem this Latium coin. It is entirely based up referrals, which is ridiculous.. You can't have an entire coin based on referrals, that's just silly. But implementing a referral program in to an otherwise well thought out and already well distributed POS coin like Vericoin, and you have a winner!

Also, any plans to implement POSV? I like the idea of this algorithm as it promotes and rewards both staking AND transactions.

The referral program is better though, and of course, the key to it all VERIFICATION.

If there comes an obligation to get verified, I'm out.

dude read ALL the posts the verification would be 100% OPTIONAL as in YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IT IF YOU DONT WANT TO, it would be a means to provide some sort of assurance to merchants and a way of holding accountability

and I'm just curious here but do you have a credit card? a debit card? a mortage or rent? a car note? insurance? a bank account of any kind? if so then you had to get verified in some form or fashion for any one of those things so what do you have to hide? you don't really have to answer I'm just making the point that this whole "I WANT 100% ANON AND ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES ME TO PROVE I AM WHO I SAY I AM I WONT TOUCH" mindset in crypto in general is not only EXTREAMELY counter productive but downright infantile, I'm not saying I'm in support of gov't watchlists and such, far from it in fact, but in the mainstream real world some level of verification and accountability is REQUIRED no ifs ands or buts about it

to all of you just joining the convo Monkeys had a very good VERIfication idea and effects has even stated that they (the Devs) are working on addressing BOTH ends of the spectrum in other words an optional Verification method and an optional Anon method, I thinks Monkeys Idea needs a bit of possible refinement and we also need to figure a way to viably and quickly implement the referral idea as well

true the interest implementation would be better for bigger bag holders but then with the 5-10 VRC per ref who would fund that and keep it funded? The VeriFund is consistently short due to lack of donations and, even more importantly, lack of miners on the multipool. I have been giving the Fund its cut of my Lotto ticket sales but thats only about 1000 VRC to the Fund so far and it's cut of the Coin sales (~1.9 BTC) will be given in a few weeks when the coins actually get shipped and are paid for in full. Thats not enough to fund a project like that (and proves that I am not profiting as heavily as some might think) As for the miners I keep mine on the VRC multipool but I only have 4.4 MH/s scrypt and 46 GH/s SHA-256 so they aren't making much in fees off of me.
