No that  is for an attacker attempting to attack you.

Though now that I reconsider it, you meant more like passwords? I have this bad feeling many will just use password or any other dumb shit and forget about it. :/
82  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ThoughtCoin on: July 15, 2011, 11:33:29 PM
Quite easy to bruteforce, and you don't need to query any site. Just patch your client and get every address in existence. Then just generate random phrases/dictionary attack. You could end with a fortune quite quickly.
83  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining power of Bitcoin vs other networks on: July 15, 2011, 06:40:01 PM
5.8 petaflops, or 5800 teraflops...
on pretty much all recent archs with vector units, one 32-bit INTOP = 2 single precision FLOP
one bitcoinhash is ~6.35k x86 INTOP
450G hash/s * 6.35k INTOP/hash = 2858T INTOP/s
2858T INTOP/s * 2 FLOP/INTOP = ~6700T FLOP/s

I asked the admin and he responded that the conversion used on the http://bitcoinwatch.com/ page is from this very thread!  The site uses the formula from above (after correction for the typo).

The page simply uses the following assumptions/estimates:

    1 INTOP = 2 FLOP
    1 hash = 6.35K INTOP
    1 hash = 12.7K FLOP

So the hashrate in TeraFLOP/s is simply 12.7 times the hashrate in Gigahashes/s.

For example as I wrote this:  11,558.55 Gigahashs/s * 12.7 TeraFLOP/Gigahash = 146,794 TeraFLOP/s = 146 PetaFLOP/s

So it is true.

I wonder how much electricity it is. Wait a second for the edit.

EDIT: So, assuming everyone is mining with 5970s, the most efficient, it would mean that we got a 2.3 Mhashes/joule -> 13,300,000 Mhashes/x -> 5,782,608 Joules

3.6 mJ = 1 kWh -> ~1.6 kWh?!!! I most be doing something wrong. D: Ok, it is 1.6 kWh per second. So s*m -> 3600 * 1.6 = 5,782 kWh. Tongue

Assuming 15 cents per kWh that is an expensive bill for just one block. D:

This is one of the most thought provoking articles I've seen on bitcoin in a while.
I hadn't thought of it in terms of opening up direct programmatic manipulation of money.

Indeed, though I wished it was more mainstream. He is way better reporter than many of the big corps.

New forebs article. He is being more gentile with his evaluation of privacy.

Didn't knew I could select addresses to send from. Can anyone confirm on this? :/
87  Economy / Economics / Re: Crash Curse on: July 15, 2011, 03:02:39 AM

So can you at least provide the "trash" parts and proper corrections? I really want to get corrected.(Please note this doesn't go yelling "GOLD!")
88  Economy / Economics / Re: Crash Curse on: July 14, 2011, 10:12:06 PM
Good news is, the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show a median latency of forty-four point six years, so if you're thirty or older, you're laughing. Worst case scenario, you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator and it makes a happy face.

Kidding aside

500% over 10 years is the same as the 10th root of 5 which ends up being ~1.1746, actually forgot 500% was 5 not 500 Tongue. You grab 1.1746^10th and gets to 4.99, quite close actually. What is even more amazing is 1.1746^20th you end up ~25x. So this is really worrying. Inflation instead would be of ~17.46% annually. This is confirmed by a reported ~20% in the energy field. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=inflation+rate+in+the+USA
89  Economy / Economics / Re: Crash Curse on: July 14, 2011, 08:22:03 PM

Watched it quite a while ago.  Must have been over a year now.  At the very least, he made his followers a lot of money in gold.
Well, I wouldn't always say a fortune such as Bitcoin but:

That is 5x over 10 years. :/

EDIT: 1.86164% anually. So the gov has been honest about inflation rates. That is, if you consider gold a real store of value and not a qet rich quick.

91  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gold Not Money According to Fed -- It's an Asset on: July 14, 2011, 03:07:12 PM
So....what's wrong with saying gold isn't money?  Gold isn't money.  People don't exchange it for goods and services, people buy it (with actual money) and hold onto it.  Just like other assets, e.g. silver, oil, buildings, paintings, etc.

I know goldbugs love bashing the Fed, but this is just silly.

Have you been to Utah recently? Gold is money.. and has been for the last 6000 years of our history, and somehow you know better?

What is money:

Can you smash Bitcoin somwhere in the tip, just after the gold?
92  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gold Not Money According to Fed -- It's an Asset on: July 14, 2011, 02:56:04 PM
Gold isn't money because it was not pooped by Mr. Benanke

Well for a time we had a reputation system, however it felt apart because of "hitmen" and "aid yourself" services for Bitcoins.

WTF?

Yes, setting the bottom line is hard now.

...

Tongue
99  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: [Scam Alert] Bitmole scammed services on: July 13, 2011, 01:07:07 AM
Probably shouldnt have used bitcoin for this transaction but ripplepay.

bitcoin!=credit which is where ripple comes in.

That is a neat idea, however I find the current implementation missing. :/ Maybe it can be decentralized like TorChat/F2F networks.

@Scammer a.k.a BitMole: Chill off, please. You paid for a 14 buck job. You got a 14 buck art and service. Normally you would pay up front as KeyserSoze pointed out.
The only thing you must do, rather than talk around it, is to pay. It wouldn't be beneficial at all to continue this showoff.
Also, as a complete stranger I also have an address.

@KeyserSoze: Hey, I hope this won't turn you around and make you refuse Bitcoin payment. My advice would be to do as any other payment method, ask up front, and insure you are not getting screwed. So just act as if you are getting cash from an unkown person. Good luck with your company. Smiley

NPR's Planet Money podcast has updated its RSS feed (but not yet its website?) to include an episode on Bitcoin.

I'm too tired to listen to it right now, but I'm sure it's very important.
