I also had some problems logging in earlier today... When I clicked "Manage Funds" it logged my out. It is sort of working now (at least it works some times Tongue).

how old is this movement? anybody know?

What movement? bitfoilhat is suggesting a new idea. If you are talking about Fonera, it exists since ~2007. In Europe is fairly popular and here in Portugal I have free wi-fi almost everywhere because I bought a Fonera router  Smiley

would be neat. but what if you want to go on your lappy and it has no coins but. your a champ and you remembered your wallet.dat, which is all good and stuff. but how do you get your coins if your not connected to the internet.

The portal would allow to visit certain sites.  You could access MyBitcoin or Instawallet just to issue a quick payment.
1064  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We should rename "miner" as "auditor". on: July 30, 2011, 07:03:27 AM
We really need a "Son, what is a bitcoin?" website. Like www.weusecoins.com, but with a really really simple video and a really really simple description meant for people who don't care about mining and just want to know what a bitcoin is.
1065  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We should rename "miner" as "auditor". on: July 30, 2011, 06:58:20 AM
mining itself only "sounds" real, but most people will then ask what exactly are you mining, and you inevitably will speak with some geeky words which people just cannot understand.

But if you tell people that we are auditing the transactions, people will think that they already get it. In fact, the miners ARE AUDITING the transaction and get paid for the contribution.

We can still use the metaphor of mining in our daily life, just as the notebook/laptop/, or cell phone/mobile phone. But we should promote the auditor/auditing conception in the public.

Does the core developing team has any agreements or disagreements?

Well, you are mining for bitcoins! You don't have to use geek words. The less you explain about how bitcoins work, the more people will understand it. Tongue

I got your point, but I agree with NF6X: auditing sounds really boring. Mining may not be exactly what we do, but people don't care for what we really do. Mining is just a metaphor for "we find bitcoins like people find gold".

If the bitcoin economy continues to grow, I believe that next year they will have a bit-pay logo next to the paypal one  Smiley
1067  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We should rename "miner" as "auditor". on: July 30, 2011, 04:26:28 AM
I prefer mining. It sounds more real. Auditing sounds like a financial buzz word.
1068  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: spread bitcoin on: July 30, 2011, 03:54:05 AM
Well, you could suggest to Fonera that they start accepting bitcoins. It would be cool  Cool
1069  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it worth it? on: July 30, 2011, 01:54:15 AM
If the hash rate increases it would just be cancelled out by a rise in difficulty due to blocks being completed quicker across the network.

So realistically, unless electric comes down in price or Bitcoins increase in value, this isn't a valid investment opportunity really is it?

This sums up very well what I think about mining:

We are the donkey and the carrot is a bitcoin network. We can try to get a faster donkey, but the carrot will always be ahead.

My point is the network always corrects itself. This correction may not be sudden (there are periods of higher profitability than others), but in the long term it evens out. That being said, maybe you can take a few bites at the carrot, but you won't catch it Wink

In my humble opinion, anything that requires more than 2/3 months to pay the initial investment is not worth it. Difficulty is increasing which will extend those 8 months indefinitely.

Also: the 7000 series should be out soon and your hardware will become outdated.

PS: here's a calculator that estimates difficulty to help you with your choice: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26751.0
1071  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Meze Grill Bitcoin Commercial on: July 29, 2011, 08:56:16 PM
Bitcoin payments are instant. It's settlement (in Bitcoin called confirmation) that takes a few minutes. (With credit/debit cards, the equivalent process takes several days.) In order to protect against fraud, ONLINE merchants must wait for a few confirmations before shipping an item or providing a service; since the same attacks are even less feasible in face to face transactions than they are in online transactions, it's perfectly fine in a restaurant, grocery store or similar face to face transaction to accept 0 confirmations.

If you have more interest in Bitcoin fraud and how the protocol prevents it, you can look up the numerous forum threads where these are discussed. Smiley

I just didn't know how hard it was to issue a fake payment at a store. If unconfirmed transactions can be accepted with low risk, then it's ok Smiley But I will look it up when I get the time.

That was during development, we can take the donate off now.

And Alison does work for us.  She will be at the Bitcoin Conference in NYC!

Wow...Pretty girls and bitcoins in the same company! Tongue I thought you hired her just to shoot the video. Sorry for my post then.
1073  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - We now support deposits and withdrawals of funds via Paxum. on: July 29, 2011, 03:48:45 AM
Hi Sukrim and Nmat,

We sent an email to our Euro clients outlining the issues encountered with the account we were using.

Sit tight, we have another account locked and loaded and just about ready to go.

Excuse the delay - let us make it up to you with 0.3% trading for a month!

Thanks,
Adam

I didn't get the email yet, but thanks a lot! That's really generous Smiley Will everyone get this discount, or just the two of us?  Grin
1074  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bit-Pay.com / Super Boost for Bitcoin Economy on: July 29, 2011, 03:44:39 AM
I have no problem paying a fee to use a merchant service.  However, they should take the donate "begging" link off their front page before they start.

omg, I didn't see that. You must remove it. It doesn't put out a good image about a paid service.

I love the idea, but your website still needs a little work. I saw that you were designing a new the logo. That's good. Get an original favicon while you're at it Wink
The video is nice, but the girl is kind of... Well, she's good to look at, but usually there is just a voice over. If someone is seen, he/she should be working at the company I think...

But these are details. Good luck with your service.
1075  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Meze Grill Bitcoin Commercial on: July 29, 2011, 02:14:31 AM
It's a nice video. Congratulations Smiley

There's one thing I never understood about these stores; when you pay for bitcoins do you have to wait until the transaction is confirmed or can you take your food and go while it is unconfirmed?
1076  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bit-Pay.com / Super Boost for Bitcoin Economy on: July 29, 2011, 01:58:32 AM
This is the kind of service bitcoin needed. Congratulations Smiley

1080  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill - Why we no longer accept Dwolla and an open letter to Ben Milne on: July 27, 2011, 11:55:15 AM
Dwolla and CampBX are discussing a solution to the problem and everything seems to be going fine. MtGox is ok with this (I haven't heard anything from them). Why is TradeHill the only one being ignored? This doesn't make much sense to me...
