Just to add my personal opinion of the Wallet Fiasco...
There's no evidence that GitHub has been hacked...
So whoever posted the 'rogue file' must have had prior access to the account.
And the reason for the hack is probably more compromising than the BTG team care to admit.
Not dumping a Virus, or Rootkit, as they've suggested.
The major weakness of HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) wallets is that they rely on a 'seed' value to generate every address that they are capable of.
Compromise this, and you can access the private keys generated by every copy of the 'rogue' wallet.
And then steal the contents of every address generated by that seed.

Hey, can anyone tell me why after staking for the last month, yesterday I have two mined transactions that show an address that is not any of mine?

Just to set your mind at rest, it's a normal function of the Bitcoin spec which forms the basis for most altcoins.
A Qt wallet contains multiple addresses, which are generated when you create the wallet.
Some of these are used when you 'create' receiving addresses.
When funds are sent to a receiving address, they're not discrete coins. They're just an entry in the ledger (called the blockchain) for a specific amount (say 10 vior)
When you 'spend' some of these coins (say 5 vior) the network changes the ledger entry by removing all 10 vior from your receiving address, crediting 5 to the address that you send to, and returning 5 to another address in Your wallet, known as a 'change address'. This address does not appear in your list of receiving addresses. So as you spend coins, your wallet is accumulating (and spending) the change from each transaction, in addresses that are invisible to the user (unless you use the console).
This is a poorly documented feature, and I don't claim to understand the precise mechanics of it's operation. But these 'invisible' addresses are also available to stake (for a pos coin) although the contents may be trivial compared with the main receiving addresses (so they don't stake very often).
The main thing that you should bear in mind is that if you make a large number of transactions, your wallet can literally run out of addresses (it starts with about 100). In which case it just Generates More to suit it's needs.
But a Backup of your wallet will be unaware of these newly generated addresses in a busy wallet.
So you need to make Regular Backups to remain up to date with newly generated addresses.
Because if you need to rely on a backup (having lost the current version of your wallet) it will NOT contain coins sent to addresses that were Generated after the backup was made. The Balance of the funds from one address is sent to a different address when you spend some. So you can lose funds that you thought were secure even though the Original Receiving Addresses are still in the backup.
So in summary.
There's nothing unusual about these unlabeled addresses. They're a part of the wallet function.
The precise operation of this function varies from coin to coin.
Make regular backups of Any Wallet for Any Coin that's in regular use.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated..
I forgot to add.
Go to the wallet settings menu.
Select Settings.. Options.. Wallet..
and tick Enable Coin Control.
Then select the Send Tab, which now includes coin control features.
Select Inputs and you can review transactions for receiving addresses with associated change addresses. The mystery addreses should be visible here.
You can also specify change addresses for each Send... and even use addresses in other wallets.
Use Caution.
I practice with coins that have little value and no foreseeable future. Even then I set up wallets with just a few coins for experimentation.
Have fun!

Hey, can anyone tell me why after staking for the last month, yesterday I have two mined transactions that show an address that is not any of mine?

Because you set up a shill acount.

Ah yea no man, I don't usually comment in the thread but i have had Vior since the early days and now I have a problem you automatically call me a shill?. I have checked the addresses on the explorer , they only have like 10 and 13 vior in each but the addresses are not showing in my wallet as my own. Once again I AM NOT contributing to all the childish bullshit thrown together in the last week. So any help would be lovely.
Thank You

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I'm worried its my PC compromised or something.

Hi, I just checked my transactions list and i see an other adress as well.. i would like to know as well..

Dev?

did you created a different wallet address on your receive coins tab?

Hi dev, nice to hear from you again..

At first that was what i thought, that it was one of these adresses.. But it's a different one..

Hi Dev, The address match none of those in my receive tab either. Although looking through the explorer it seems to think its part of my wallet..

It would be best if everyone starts to use the viorcoin forum, so that if bitcointalk goes down again we can carry on the conversation.

also its easier for newcomers to find the information they need in a a well sorted forum than it is on bitcointalk.

It's the best way to kill off any remaining interest in the coin. Nxt Rdd and a host of others have tried it, and most have died or lost a lot of their following. Some, like BlackCoin have reinvented themselves and reopened their BTC Forum threads with limited success. But for better or worse this is still the place where speculative investors look for news upgrades opinions and gauge the level of interest in a coin.

In a wider context you might consider that attempts to curtail freedom of expression (however offensive) are not met with universal approval. They tend to result in reactionary countercultures, like online discussion groups and altcoins.

Right now the coin's not worth buying because the POS reward is less than 2% PA (a fraction of the 10% advertised on the OP).
If the devs want bounties I suggest they fix this and include (like Supercoin) an option to donate a percentage of the stake rewards in the next issue of the wallet. I invest in a range of POS coins and I'm more than happy to donate a portion of my return, just as I used to do with mining.
But there has to be a reasonable return.

The windows wallet download link on the OP returns the following message.

"We're sorry. You can't access this item because it is in violation of our Terms of Service.
Find out more about this topic at the Google Drive Help Centre."

Please could someone fix it?
Tip... Mega is the most popular download site and I've never had a problem with it.

Based on the first 24 hrs of staking, the daily return is around 0.0035%, or 1.25% per year.
This is considerably less than the advertised rate of return. Can anyone please explain?
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Viorcoin | Voice & Video Call | Cheap International Calls on: January 08, 2015, 11:07:39 AM
Interesting product, but it lacks documentation.
I downloaded the wallet, but it looks like any other qt wallet and there's not even instructions on how to get started.
I pressed the call button out of curiosity but it told me I didn't have an account.
The web page is full of waffle but no practical advice on how to make a call.

I assume that the wallet incorporates a built-in media player for voice and video, but there's no immediate sign.
What codecs does it support? Resolution? Framerate?
Could it be used as a music and video player?
Could it incorporate an introductory demo video?
Does it need coins to operate?
What are the charges for calls?
Does it need this 'gateway' everyone's talking about before it will work?

I'm sure all the information's buried deep in the archives of this forum, but I'm not inclined to wade through 90 pages in order to gain a rough idea of how it might work, from a dozen different opinions.
A simple step by step guide would be greatly appreciated.

As a coin it has potential but it needs more than one exchange. Buying on Bittrex is like playing whack-a-mole. Sure I can buy at the top end, but making a bid's out of the question as it's inevitably capped and blocked by one sat. Annoying's not the word. There's too much manipulation to make it a fair fight. I know it happens on Cryptsy too, but it's much harder to manipulate multiple exchanges. And more exchanges brings a wider user base. By the looks of things this coin's mostly in the hands of a small group of major players. Not good for the small investor. The alternative listed on the op (altbuddy) is seemingly now defunct.

A final question for anybody in the know. Is the interest rate (25%) simple or compound?

Any advice will be much appreciated. It's not the best way to arrive with a list of criticisms, but I hope they're taken as constructive. I see a lot of calls for wider adoption, but I think the product needs to be more user-friendly for newbies.

The curious incident of the coins in the night-time.

I sent some coins to an empty wallet using the previous version of the software.
They failed to arrive, although the send was confirmed many times.
Cutting a long story (and many hours of frustration) short...

The destination wallet.dat was created using the previous software, but running in the new software with a fresh download of the blockchain. It was empty before the upgrade.

As a final resort I copied the destination wallet.dat to the machine running the previous software, and placed it in the silk data folder.
When it eventually synchronised the coins appeared. They were still not showing in the same wallet.dat running with the latest version.
So I copied the destination wallet from the machine with the previous version to the machine running the current version.
Having registered with the wallet.dat under the previous version... the coins were now present and correct under the new version.
So I have Two Copies of the same wallet.dat (created with the previous version and containing the same addresses).
One copy was empty when I upgraded to the latest software and refuses to see coins sent to addresses in that wallet.
The other copy was empty until I ran it using the previous software, when it registere receipt of the coins.
The sending wallet was running under the old software.

The coins sent to this wallet.dat will not register under the latest software until they have registered with the software version that created it.

I have not conducted any more tests, but it would seem that the addresses in a wallet created by the previous software need to be initialised by receiving coins under that version before they will function correctly with the new version. The copy that has not been running under the previous version (since the coins were sent) is still reporting that it is empty under the new version.

This could cause compatibility issues with upgrades, so I'm hoping that the team will investigate. Sorry about the longwinded account.

hmm why did you use an empty wallet.DAT from old in new then send old coins to old wallet in new client? lol that's some kind of riddle..

As explained in a previous post, I used to clean up my wallets by sending coins to a fresh wallet. I had one set up when the upgrade was issued so I used it with the new software and a fresh copy of the blockchain rather than setting up a new wallet from scratch. No orphans, redundant receiving addresses, or fragmented staking.

personally I just kept my old wallet while running the new beta exe.

have you checked wallet for any mismatched coins?
kinda sounds like using 2 different wallet.dats with different balances on 2 different versions might cause issues lol

The same Wallet.dat on two different versions. When the coins didn't arrive I tried numerous remedies before I thought of copying the wallet back into the old software which generated it. The coins arrived when I opened the wallet with the old software, and when I switched That copy to the new software they were fine. But I still have a copy of the same wallet that has not been used with the old software since the coins were transferred. This copy will not register the coins.

Try it for yourself.
Have a sending wallet running with the old software. Generate a new receiving wallet using the old software, and then run it using the new software. Send some coins to the receiving wallet and wait for them to arrive. If they don't, then copy the receiving wallet.dat to the machine running the old software and see them arrive. Then copy the receiving wallet back to the machine running the new software having first made a backup copy of of the wallet.dat that refused to see the coins. The copy that's been run through the old software should contain the coins from the sending wallet... but the copy that hasn't been run through the old software will refuse to do so.

The addresses in Both copies are identical. So why won't the copy that hasn't

It's an obscure but interesting scenario that only cane to light by accident. It 'might' have an impact on upgrades if an old wallet.dat is used (as frequently happens) with upgraded software. It only seems to affect wallets that have not been used at all before an upgrade, but I haven't investigated in greater depth. If it affects receiving addresses that haven't been used prior to the upgrade then there could be more serious ramifications... particularly after a hard fork, when 'fixing' the wallet by running the software that generated it is no longer an option.

It may well be an issue that affects other coins. I'll look around for some with recently upgraded wallets and give it a try. I now have both versions of silkcoin set up on one machine, each with it's own copy of the blockchain (not using default locations). You can't run them together because of a conflict accessing ports, but they run quite normally using either/or.

unless you talking about two different computers then this might make more sense.

you in silkchat? welcome to pm me and we can talk more.
sooo is there missing coins? I'm sorry couldn't really find for sure if that was the case in the post, lol but its christmas eve and Santa has rum haha

So does getting rid of all the orphans from my wallet actually help anyone else? What's the big rush to get rid of them?
No. It helps no-one else. By definition an orphan is the record of a submission to the network of work meeting the criteria for generating a new block... but the submission was rejected by the network (usually because someone got there just before you). It's a local record, kept in your wallet.dat file. So it clutters up your wallet without becoming part of the blockchain.

It's part and parcel of mining, whether through POS or POW. The cleanup tool just gets rid of this clutter from your wallet.

You can also clean your wallet, and contribute to the network, by moving your coins to a fresh wallet.  It's slightly more costly because you pay transaction fees. But it helps to keep the network moving and alive.

Staking also keeps the network alive... but the current rate of return is no incentive to hold coins. By my own primitive calculations the current 'interest' is about 3.8% PA. The 5% in the official documentation is 'compound' interest based on reinvesting all generated coins. IMO this should be increased to 10% simple interest, with premiums for coins held above 90, 180, 270, and 360 Days (say 12.5%, 15%, 17.5% and 20%). This would encourage people to hold staking wallets, thus securing the network, and help to stabilise the price on exchanges. It could also encourage adoption by merchants who could benefit from holding currency reserves.
Just a thought.

Of course then the orphan removal tool would become more significant, as moving coins between addresses would incur the penalty of lost interest and coin-age. ATM the penalty is negligible.

Stuck on 1.3.1

Every time I open my wallet I get a message recommending an upgrade from my current version 1.3.1 to 1.3.4.
But when I download the upgrade and reopen the wallet it reverts to 1.3.1. Can anyone please offer some advice?

Do you use the windows client from http://nxtra.org/nxt-wallet/? It Includes 1.3.1 and the auto-update feature didn't work for me too!

I finally gave up and downloaded the supernet client. It's working well!  Grin

But you can also run the original client very easy, because you have already java installed:
Download the latest version from nxtforum.org banner. Compare the hashes. Unpack to c:\nxt. Start run.bat. Open internet explorer and go to "localhost:7876". Wait until the blockchain downloaded. Enjoy.

Many thanks for the advice. At least I know that the update feature is broken. But I really don't want to run a wallet in a browser. Paranoid no doubt. But I don't feel comfortable leaving it open, and in any case I clear it every time I visit a web page. So I'll stick with the outdated wallet until a new version is made available to download.

I was using the latest tag from github, so I'll try the latest pull instead. That may just solve it.

I wasn't using a .conf until I lost patience waiting for connections. This is on a machine that had no silkcoin wallet before so no issues with old peers.dat or such. I did download that .zip of the chain from github too.

TY for the ideas. I'll tinker some more.
I've found through trial and error that a lot of wallet problems (for various coins) are resolved by clearing redundant registry items. This can't be done with a standard registry cleaner. You need a Uninstaller such as Revo or CClean which will search for registry traces and files left behind by previous versions. Revo works best for me.
Avoid wallet installers if at all possible, and install manually. If my suggestions work, pleas leave feedback so that others can adopt them if they encounter difficulties.
The blockchain zip was updated a while back when I asked for help with sync problems. But even so, it's a painfully slow business catching up. Run your wallet every few days to avoid it getting stuck. Let it run for a few hours, not just minutes, after it's synced.

FYI, Trex is delisting SC on Dec. 15th.  I don't have time to sort through this thread at the moment so don't know if it's been noted or not.  I'm just trying to rescue some SC that are stranded there before I forget about them (again).

I'm trying to get a clean wallet synced and getting no connections. I've tried to find some addnode addies for the .conf, but can't seem to track anything down.  Maybe your new wallet will sort it out?

If you don't have a new wallet very soon that works, please publish some valid nodes on the OP?

Thanks.

The current wallet works fine for me.
v1.1.0.21-g32a928e
I suggest you download the latest version from github And a copy of the blockchain.
Backup your active wallet as (say) silkwallet.dat
Delete All Silk files and folders, if possible using Revo or another uninstaller that will remove all Registry components, or install on a machine that has not been used for Silk.
Run silk and close it.
Delete the blockchain files and folders (use the contents of the zip as a guide) and replace with contents of blockchain zip (don't just overwrite).
Let the wallet sync And Then replace the wallet.dat with a copy of your backup (rename your backup to wallet dat).
I don't use a conf file or addnodes. These should not be necessary. Just speculating, but they might even be counterproductive if they're out of date.
I assume you know how to find the appropriate files in their default locations.
Don't try to connect through a proxy such as Tor. This used to work and then it stopped working.
Best of luck.

No we run the Apis from our website and then to markets.  Has a cache to allow us to freeze Apis before hitting the wallet if changed by the exchange.   I was so caught up in the mint pal fiasco, didn't even think about the API being changed really.  They've now disabled the API completely and we have froze it from our site.

My Bad for not paying close enough attention.  Was busy being blown away by gox #2.

In considering though, it likely is a good idea to have a lite client as well.  The more features in wallet, and In particular dealing with exchanges, the more problems can arise.

As well, some users may only want send receive balance and staking features, so a lite client as aback up or as a user preference might be a good idea.

We have tried numerous times to replicate the error and so far no luck.   Can users confirm if these crashes were windows, Mac, or both?

Think there was 3 reports of crashes before situation was resolved.

Before you notified us of the cause and the fix, my (W764) wallet had crashed repeatedly as it was opening. Panic. Backup and remove wallet.dat (test app with fresh wallet.dat). Virus Checks. Download a fresh copy of app. Try another machine using same blockchain. Delete blockchain (without making a copy). Wallet still won't open. Reports here of similar problems. You report the fix. Left to redownload blockchain because of own carelessness. 18 hrs using blockchain.zip. Lots of time wasted (but not needlessly if lessons are learned).

Sorry about the shorthand, but that's it in a nutshell. Thanks for fixing it (but please update blockchain.zip). But my point is that we now have a proven mechanism that can remotely disable wallets. So the ability to reinstall the app without enabling the features looks like a priority... or a second 'emergency' wallet that enables transfer of funds. But that means maintaining Two wallets in sync. Mandatory upgrades will apply to Both. And that leaves room for more confusion.

PS
I also (carelessly) deleted the logfiles or I could pass them on to you. Sorry. There was an entry about being unable to make a connection, so I tested the app with the internet disconnected but it still crashed (although it remained open slightly longer before crashing). I used CClean to clear browser traces DNS and registry faults, but in retrospect I should have tried a more thorough registry cleaner.

With the weaver I hope for future projects:

1. Super simple silk staking wallet interface
-basically a tiny window with just my balance and one button to unlock for staking

2. Bitcoin headers-first protocol applied to Silkcoin

Thistleblower I hope one or both of these would solve your (and other users) issues.

a small wallet?

weaver let go.

I think having a lite wallet based on Multibit would be a great idea, i have no idea on the work involved though, but its been done with Dogecoin, so it is possible.
Just an option to disable Market Data (preferably On By Default) would be enough. The recent Mintpal failure has shown that the wallet will not launch if there is a problem with Market Data. It has also shown that the Fix is not dependent on issuing a new wallet. The feeds are controlled from a central location.
This means that a fault in the Feeds for Market Data can Prevent the Wallet from Opening and prevent users from accessing their coins.
Putting it another way... an attack on the market data feeds may currently prevent users from accessing their funds. This is not a small issue. It could affect every Silkcoin user (certainly those who use the Windows wallet). If I can't open my wallet because it will not open when there's a problem with Market Data, then my coins might still be safe, but they're beyond my control.
So, with respect, I suggest that it's an issue which requires urgent attention.

So the developers rip off the investors and then the escrow hijacks the funds. You couldn't make it up. What a sorry little tale of rapacious greed. The simple lesson is not to trust IPOs.

Developers DIDN'T rip off investors, that is getting your facts wrong. This WHOLE situation is Moolah/Ryan Gentle, everything. The launch was not that bad, some minor bumps, but they should have gotten funds from Ryan asap afterwards.

Ryan is now found out to be known scammer and set up moolah company playing off as a legit company, but he's a scammerartist.

This has nothing at all to do with syscoin itself as a coin, and developers, development and future projects of this coin.

If your mad, then Ryan Gentle is the man you should be taking your anger out on.

I'm not mad. I bought and sold (at a loss) after the IPO fiasco. But I still have a copy of the original totally dysfunctional wallet first released after the IPO. None of the promises made for the IPO were upheld with that release, none of the refund promises were upheld, and instead Moolah held onto the funds to ensure that the developers worked on fixes for that abortion of a release.

And now Moolah have embezzled the funds. I'm thinking of having talks with Spielberg's agents about a movie or mini-series.

Feature Request.
Would it be possible to disable the Market Data feature altogether (and preferably by default) in future releases of the wallet?
I don't use it myself, but after the recent Mintpal problems I'm concerned that the failure of this feature can cause the application to fail. At least with a simple wallet you can still access coins when there are problems with accessories.

Would it be possible also to update the blockchain zip? I deleted the blockchain before the fix was applied, and now I'm having serious problems resyncing the wallet. The current blockchain zip is 40 days behind, and after 12 hours I'm still 39 days behind.

Sorry to be complaining, but I'm still a strong supporter.
