601  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Request for Account Deletion on: September 11, 2011, 11:28:40 PM
Or I could have registered a couple of months ago when a friend of mine and I were looking into starting a bitcoin mining rig.  After weighing the options, I decided against starting up the rig.  Today, I get an email telling me that the forum has been hacked and advising me to change my passwords.  I comply, but then realize that I would rather not have my email address tied to an account that I no longer intend to use (despite the fact that I once considered it an important step to entering the bitcoin mining world).  You're correct in that it was my first post.  While I am sure it is an uncommon occurrence, I feel that you might have jumped to conclusions a bit regarding my character.

Could you explain how one goes about deleting their account?  Upon search, I found that an admin must delete you.  Unfortunately, I am not allowed to message the admin to ask him to delete my account.

The advice to change your password is just a precaution. There is no evidence that any data was stolen. I actually think that the staff here have done a great job getting the forum back up and running this quickly.

If you're worried about your email address being stored here then just change it to a throwaway address. Not really worth it though, because if the hacker did obtain the db then he will already have your email address.

No point closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, really.

If you insist on having your account removed, wait for a mod to see this thread. They can ask an admin to care of it for you. Or you could just make a few more posts in this thread until you have the ability to use the PM system.
602  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Request for Account Deletion on: September 11, 2011, 10:50:24 PM
So you registered, in order to make a single post, requesting that your account be deleted... hmmm Huh
603  Economy / Services / Re: BitCoinTorrentz.com - Fast, Anonymous, Torrent Download Service on: September 11, 2011, 10:31:26 PM
You should at least have the system seed the torrent to a 1:1 ratio (ex. 100MB dl'd, 100MB ul'd), or have an option to do so, or seed more. Might make it more handy for user of private torrent trackers which embed user data in the .torrents.

Also. I can rent out my entire signature space, 1BTC a week. I post a lot, and you are going to get a lot of publicity ^^

Thats actually a great idea Jessica, thanks for that. This is why I love this place!

At the moment, torrents will seed for a maximum of 60 minutes, with limited upload speed, and will then automatically stop. I may indeed include the option of continual seeding for those using private torrent sites, for an additional fee. Though, if you happen to have access to a private torrent tracker, the odd's are you probably wouldn't find much use for my service in the first place.

Kind of you to offer your valuable signature space! I'll have to get back to you on that! :p

I think one mod that should definitely be considered is some sort of post "voting" system, where if a post gets enough negative votes it gets automatically hidden. Should take care of much of the trolling that has been going on lately.

There are some significant custom modifications, and most of the non-custom mods don't have 2.0 versions.

Now that hosting isn't a problem, I'm going to use the donation money to hire people to improve the forum. Maybe we'll move to some totally different forum software.

Dang, thats unfortunate. vBulletin or IPB are probably your best two options if you do decide to transition to new forum software, and don't mind having to pay the annual license fee. I peter vb because the newer versions of IPB are bloated with a load of unnecessary features. Its simple and straightforward.

I'm pretty sure that newer versions of the commercial forum solutions allow you to import data from other forum software. You can definitely get 3rd party solutions to convert the SMF mysql database into a format useable by other forum packages.
608  Other / Meta / Re: Who installs SMF anyway? on: September 11, 2011, 06:22:04 AM
Moving to 2.0 would be a major pain because this forum uses many modifications.

Believe me, I know how you feel. I ran several forums with a number of thousand members each, and every time it came to update the software it was an absolute nightmare. The modifications you have done, are they plugin's or hardcoded into the SMF code? Because most plugins should be updated to support the newer editions. It would just be a matter of reinstalling.

Though, if you have made significant hard-coded changes to the forum scripts... well, better you than me that's all I'll say.
609  Other / Meta / Re: Who installs SMF anyway? on: September 09, 2011, 08:19:08 PM
vBulletin is by far the BEST forum software out there. SMF is plagued with security bugs.

WTF? This just popped up while I was browsing the forum:

Bitcoin, eh? Never heard of it. But perchance you would like to try something better. Something with more "zing". Something named CosbyCoin!

And also, the title of the forum was renamed to CosbyCoin Forum.

This is a perfect application of bitcoin, I'll definitely be spreading the word.

If users are downloading copyrighted material, aren't you also liable? How do you plan to handle this?

Thanks for your kind comment. I really do think that more services should start to accept bitcoin as a means of payment if the currency is to continue to exist in a useful form, rather than a speculative vehicle. I feel that my service is one small step in the right direction.

With regards to my personal liability, I have included the following disclaimer on the homepage:

Quote from: bitcointorrentz.com
The Standard Disclaimer
Please remember that the illegal downloading of copyrighted material is a punishable offense.
Please use this service for the downloading of legal, non-copyrighted materials only.

I should probably pad-out the disclaimer a little bit though.

I would appreciate it if anyone here who has used the bitcointorrentz.com service could provide feedback on the system. Is there anything that could be improved upon or modified to make the service more user friendly?
612  Economy / Services / Re: [INTRODUCING] BitCoinTorrentz.com - Remote Torrent Downloading Service on: September 09, 2011, 05:25:57 PM
You should! Admittedly, it's hard to beat the "free"-price point of Bitwillet, but maybe you could make it work by offering excellent reliability.

BitWillit will not remain free indefinitely. They are offering a free service right now in order to increase their user base. But once they have enough regular members, I wouldn't be surprised to see the introduction of service fees. It's a good strategy, if not a bit devious. In my experience with them though, their unreliable service outweighs the fact that it is currently being offered free of charge. Hence the decision to create my own solution.
613  Economy / Services / Re: [INTRODUCING] BitCoinTorrentz.com - Remote Torrent Downloading Service on: September 09, 2011, 04:54:03 PM
What system are you using to accept Bitcoin payments? Looks like a custom-hosted version of Bitwillet.

Great question! I have actually created my own checkout feature based on the bitwillet system. In the beginning, i decided to use bitwillet for it's simplicity and ease of use, but it proved to be extremely unreliable. Their system would go down for days making it impossible for users to checkout.

Because of this, I decided to code my own custom-hosted version to replicate the functionality bitwillit provided, albeit intermittently. It works absolutely perfectly, and hands-down beats trusting my earnings to an intermediary.

My checkout feature is probably the thing I am most proud of on the site. I am actually considering releasing it as a standalone service/plugin that users can use and host on their own websites, instead of having to trust 3rd party checkout services.
614  Economy / Services / Re: [INTRODUCING] BitCoinTorrentz.com - Remote Torrent Downloading Service on: September 09, 2011, 04:28:52 PM
Hey there,

I like the idea, would definitely use it.
Few questions

1. How is your service different from a seedbox?
2. If anything torrent is much faster than http/ftp, would it be better to give us some sort of online storage like dropbox where we can see our torrents donwloaded. Possibly create a folder on our computers.
3. How does someone see the status of a torrent?

Good luck!!

-Charlie

Thanks for your input Charlie, it is much appreciated.

What sets bitcointorrentz.com aside from a seedbox is the fact that it is a single-use service. You only pay for torrents that you download, instead of paying a flat rate monthly fee. This could potentially save you a lot of money. This service is, however, not currently designed for long-term seeding or online storage of torrents so if this is what you want, a seedbox would probably be a better solution.

This site is extremely new, and is undergoing constant improvement. I have many ideas that could make this service even better. I think your suggestions about providing additional means of accessing the files, such as a dropbox-like service, are very interesting. I will certainly keep it in mind for v2.

Torrents are indeed potentially faster, but if you have a slow connection with poor upload speed, if your ports are not forwarded correctly, if you are stuck behind a filtering proxy, or if your ISP does not allow torrent traffic, your torrent download speed will likely not reach it's maximum potential. With http or ftp, your download speed is only limited by your own home broadband connection. And since you are able to stream downloaded video and audio files, having a slow connection does not mean you have to wait for the torrent to finish before you can access the file - meaning much faster access to that tv show or movie you want to watch.

With regards to the checking of the status of the torrent, once you have initiated a download, you will be provided with a status link that you can use to check the current status of the torrent. This is a private, single-use, and throwaway link, that identifies your torrent. Once the download is complete, the status page will provide you with the download link to the files automatically. I am actually currently working on implementing code for a more detailed status inquiry.

Introducing BitCoinTorrentz.com, a high-speed, fully automated and 100% annonymous remote torrent downloading service.
You can find us at: BitCoinTorrentz.com

NOTE: We are trading on GLBSE, ticker symbol BitCoinTorrentz

What is BitCoinTorrentz.com
This website provides a remote torrent downloading service to it's users in exchange for payment in BitCoin. The cost is calculated based on the size of the file you wish to download. We charge a modest fee of 0.08 BTC/GB (but offer up to 50% discount - see below).

I would appreciate if anyone out there could try it out - it's really quick - and reply with any feedback you might have on the service, how it could be improved, or indeed any criticism. All comments are welcome.

How it Works
BitCoinTorrentz.com will download any torrent of your choice at lightning speed. Our servers can download torrents at speeds up to 100x that of a regular, home broadband connection. So your torrent will be ready for download/streaming in a matter of minutes in most cases.

You can either upload a .torrent file directly to our servers, or enter the url of a direct link to a .torrent file from your tracker's website. We analyze the torrent, and calculate it's total size and some other information. Once you confirm the torrent it will begin to download immediately, and you will be given a unique link that you can use to monitor the status of the download.

100% Anonymity
We place great value on the privacy of our users, and therefore pledge to provide a 100% anonymous service. No information is logged to our servers that could be used to identify you. All torrents are securely deleted after 3 days, and our service does not log IP traffic.

How you get the files
Once the torrent has completed, we provide a direct http download link to the files. You can then download the contents of the torrent using your browser, download manager, or ftp client (ftp access currently on-request only).

For those with slow connections, you also have the option of streaming the file directly to your media player with no loss of quality, as long as your connection is even somewhat ok. This means that if you have a slow connection, and you don't want to wait for a large torrent to fully download before you can watch it... you don't have to!

How much does it cost?
It's relatively inexpensive! The cost is calculated based on the size of the torrent you wish to download, at a rate of 0.08 BTC per GB. But if you want to know the exact cost of a particular torrent, just upload it and the exact price will be displayed.

If you register anonymously with the site, you will receive an instant 20% discount on the regular fee. For each 20gb that you download, you will receive an additional 10% reduction of your current fee. The maximum discount is 50% of the regular rate (i.e. 0.04 btc/gb).

Feedback and Support
If you have any questions, comments, queries or qualms... please do not hesitate to contact us. You can send us an email via the contact form on our website.
616  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetical New Cryptocurrency version 0.1 on: September 09, 2011, 12:19:52 PM
I wonder if there's some way to make a currency that always has the same value.  Not just equivalent to today's EU or US currency, but adjusts according to cost of living over the years.  So if you buy one at $1 today, it's still worth whatever that $1 + inflation would be in the future.  It couldn't be limited like BTC, because if it were limited it's value might increase.

Isn't one of the primary goals of bitcoin to provide a refuge for those who disagree with government sponsored inflation?

The cost of living is increasing because of all those extra USD being issued by Ben Bernanke. What you are suggesting, essentially, is to inflate the currency in line with the inflation of fiat currencies, so that it's value gets debased also.

That goes against everything that bitcoin was set up to achieve.
617  Other / Meta / Re: Please stop trolling on: September 08, 2011, 10:42:55 PM
I think a post voting system would go down well here. That way it leaves it up to the community to moderate itself. Posts with a enough negative votes would automatically be hidden, in addition to replies quoting that post. That would take care of a lot of the mess I think.

He doesn't want nobel, he want money. That's why he is spamming that bullshit

Nobel prizewinners are awarded $1.4 million in addition to the fancy medal.

I'm genuinely annoyed at this thread. I thought all the nonsense about perpetual motion and "free energy" had been put to bed decades ago, yet this guy is still peddling this bullshit to idiots who are willing to pay $5000 a pop. It's unbelievable.
619  Other / Off-topic / Re: I Manufacture machines that generate free electricity. A match made in heaven? on: September 08, 2011, 07:59:59 AM
1. Perpetual motion - impossible due to friction. You cannot completely eradicate the force of friction in any closed system that does work. This will lead to eventual deceleration back to rest unless an external force of equal magnitude is applied in perpetuity to counteract it. And the wear and tear on components will cause the system to fail eventually. That is not perpetual motion.

2. Free energy - you used this phrase out of correct scientific context. Free energy=total energy - entropy, i.e. the energy in a system available to do work. Free energy does not mean energy that you can get for free (i.e. without doing work), and to use it in this way is just misleading. Erwin Schrodinger would be appalled:

Quote from: Schrodinger, on Free Energy
... this highly technical term seemed linguistically too near to energy for making the average reader alive to the contrast between the two things.

3. 500% efficiency - un-freaking-believable. Do you know anything about thermodynamics whatsoever? Entropy? Conservation of energy? Are these phrases ringing any bells? I honestly doubt it... where is all that extra energy coming from? And how have you managed to create a system that does work but does not create any entropy whatsoever, i.e. wasted energy / heat? In fact, what you allege to have created is a machine which must actually ABSORB entropy / atmospheric heat. Needless to say, this is not be possible with a machine made out of a few magnets and a small battery. I mean, for crying out loud, a system cannot even be 100% efficient, let alone 500%. Our most efficient CFL light bulbs only get about 10% efficiency, and regular incandescent bulbs are only 2%. If you had truly created a 500% efficient system, you would have won the nobel prize for physics. And you would have solved global warming, because your entropy absorbing machine would be able to absorb all that heat and use it to generate electricity.

I'm sorry, the only thing you manufacture is bullshit and spurious claims my friend.
Peddle your crap-o-matic elsewhere.
620  Economy / Speculation / Re: Looks like the Manipulator is back in the market. Buy-hold-SELL SELL SELL on: September 08, 2011, 06:32:59 AM
What other market can you think of that 100K can whip saw it all over the place?

I guess the term "manipulator" was just more fun to throw around as a label for people with more money then me trading in bitcoins.
When a single person can drop the price by 10% in seconds.. i would say they have the ability to manipulate the market for bitcoins
a lot more then any other market i can come up with right now.

But i do understand your point and concede.

Maybe if all the exchanges got together and pooled all of their bid and ask prices, then medium/large-ish transactions wouldn't affect the overall price so much. It's because they are all so fragmented and diffuse, each with relatively small volume individually, that the price can be affected so easily. 100k on a single bitcoin exchange might as well be trillions on any other market.

Most other markets are bigger, so require larger volumes to affect price but they also have bigger players (banks, hedge funds, pension funds, governments) who can affect their particular markets to the same degree. But I desist, I'm being pedantic. I know what you meant.

It seems to be an inescapable fact of life that people will use and abuse economic hegemony time and time again for their own individual gain. It appalls me that this is the way our global economic system works.
