41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin core, Bitcoin xt, forks left right and centre, Where do i stand? on: August 11, 2015, 06:02:06 PM
Bitcoin has  had unintentional forks in the past where we have quickly recovered from. March 11th 2013 comes to mind...

An intentional move to Fork by miners and nodes to using big blocks is a demonstration of bitcoin's strength, not its weakness.
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / BitcoinXT and Gavin have my support. on: August 11, 2015, 05:53:10 PM
For what it's worth as one of the VIPs here.

Further, due to recent censorship regarding BitcoinXT and discussion on using larger blocks on /r/Bitcoin I suggest users start using https://voat.co/v/bitcoin

Actions by Mods on Voat are free for everyone to see.

43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Yay or Nay to Increasing Block Size to 20mb? on: May 08, 2015, 07:17:28 PM
I think the majority of people who are against increasing the block size do not run full nodes. What an incredible amount of fake outrage.
44  Economy / Speculation / Re: How SOON will the BTC rally begin? on: May 01, 2015, 05:01:54 PM
All this discussion about the halving...

We've been there before. I seem to recall nothing really happened during the last one. If we do rally by the next halving I believe it will be a coincidence of pre-existing market factors.

Is bitcoin dead again?

I used to have all the altocoin forums on ignore, then I found syscoin. But the utter scams that take place in the altcoin section come to find out is HORRIBLE. Not only that when people get scammed in altcoin it gets tied to bitcon."looks bad for the community" I think they should have there own  forum and I am a active member of the syscoin community and and all 85 people in our IRC agree. We are moving away from using bitcointalk in general cause of the HUGE cesspool of scams that go on there and we do not want to be associated with it.

I get messages everyday asking me to find the guy who start poopcoin, hotdogcoin, beercoin, yadda yadda cause people follow the crowds just like they did with pirate40

Theymos is profiting in some way off alt-coin boards popularity, so any discussion in its removal will be just that. Discussion. If I knew those funds were going towards the community I wouldn't mind so much. Consider the amount of money that's been donated to these boards and what we have so far got in return though. This is the only reason why I'm a little bitter, as I wanted to support this community and Bitcoin, not those who would debase it and taint bitcoin's name and its technology.

No reasonable person could look at those boards and say it has a place here on bitcointalk.

The altcoin sections are very popular, so I'd like to support them.

What is in it for this community by supporting them? Why do you think its worth the bandwidth and risk to new users?

Quote
I don't think that they do anything to hurt the other sections.

Their mere presence here hurts the community's and bitcoin's credibility. Why should new users believe us when we tell them Bitcoin isn't a scam, but we are gladly party to alt-coins which are?

Quote
I'm not usually interested in altcoins myself, but I can see how people can enjoy them.

They're popular, so you wanted to support them I thought. That support I would figure requires active interest and a clear benefit to these forums or yourself.

Most altcoin "investing" is a lot like gambling. I can see how trying to navigate and manipulate these tiny markets could be fun for a lot of people.

Why are we even about facilitating this activity here. I could see how it could be fun for people too, but why is this an argument for keeping them around? Whats in it for the rest of us? If the alt boards are generating traffic and helping to support the site just say so.

These pump-and-dump altcoins aren't really competitors to Bitcoin: they're really a way of using your bitcoins to gamble. There are also a handful of technologically interesting altcoins like Monero, which I think are very useful for testing new ideas that might one day be incorporated into Bitcoin.

But naive users don't know that. They come here to learn about bitcoin and instead are blasted with a huge amount of BS they have to sift through. It makes knowledgeable users job of educating that much harder.

And any technologically interesting coin capable of succeeding doesn't need to use bitcointalk as a launch platform and should be expected to stand on their own merit...

edit: hmmm so looks like new users aren't blasted with alt-coin propaganda as much as they used to be. At least that's changed for the better since I've been gone. And apparently new forum software is coming out... honestly I didn't ever see that happening.
47  Other / Meta / Re: Lets talk about the altcoin section again on: December 08, 2014, 05:35:19 PM
I personally have always hated how we have tolerated it. Largely a cesspool of scum and villainy. They do not further Bitcoin, and they prey upon new users more often than not. Bitcoin is dangerous enough for the uninitiated, having the scam coins parked here is not helping things.

I agree with OP. I didn't throw money at this forum to support alt-coins.
48  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FBI Auctioned/US Marshall coins moved. Price to go to the moon!!! on: December 08, 2014, 05:22:15 PM
I think some of the reasoning is that since the silk road BTC confiscation there has been lots of fear and uncertainty what the fate of those coins would do to the market.

Now that the coins have finally left federal hands and are back in the ecosystem some of that fear is alleviated.
49  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: gcoins on: November 25, 2014, 12:15:48 AM
oh god, the topic has been moved to the altcoin section. abandon thread

In response to the OP, gcoin is probably BS like every single other altcoin.
50  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: gcoins on: November 25, 2014, 12:02:01 AM
ummm... maybe I'm just really... really out of the loop, but what is a "gcoin"?
51  Economy / Speculation / Re: Volatility and Psychology on: August 18, 2014, 05:31:11 AM
Volatility has decreased as bitcoin and the bitcoin markets mature. A small market like Bitcoin can be easily moved, either by dedicated individuals, or perhaps by the sudden acceptance by some major retailers.

I'm not worried at any rate.

Those drops had understandable reasons and actually had quick rebounds. But this current drop is psychologically worse because people see that most of the news is good but the price is dropping for no good reason. Those early drops made BTC look strong because of the support. This drop makes the BTC community look weak.

If one feels the news is good and also feels the price is dropping for "no good reason", then one logically should be buying coins while the market is being illogical.

With all the high exposure brands accepting Bitcoin recently, I have a hard time seeing bitcoin as weak, but rather customers and merchants recognizing Bitcoin's strength

Commence every single person replying to this thread talking sh*t about Ethereum, but misspelling it and not knowing what it is, at the same time.

Kinda like Bitcoin skeptics.  Crazy huh?

-B-

Except, there are real challenges for any altcoin to overcome, and none have so far.

Here are some interesting write ups on why that may continue to be the case:

It still boggles my mind that we are in the peta-hash range.
56  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: i'm planinng to buy 15x of ANTMINER S3 , need recommendations on: July 30, 2014, 10:13:36 PM
I would caution you to instead use your money to simply buy and hold Bitcoin for the time being.

At this point in the game, if you do not have a solid plan, you mining operation will not make a profit, and even if it does, you would probably would have been better off just buying the bitcoins outright with your capital.

Post in the mining board, I'm afraid I've been too far removed from mining to really know what would be best, or what is even profitable anymore but considering your questions are newbish (no offense) it raises a red flag immediately.

Due to measures FinCEN has taken against Casascius Coins, effective immediately we will no longer be loading coins or supplying denominated holograms.

We will continue selling our coins as blanks where you may easily make your own Physical Bitcoin. Serialized coins will be available again soon, but with signed messages from their payment addresses verifying their serial. For the time being, we will only be selling the blank silver rounds. It is unfortunate that is has come to this, but it will not stop us from spreading the ideals Bitcoin represents.
