701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info/wallet is the BEST Bitcoin client as-of-date. on: February 12, 2012, 11:33:16 PM
You load the webpage, enter your credentials and you have access to your funds. Your coins are not stored anywhere but your head through your password and possibly your email account, if you so choose. You only need to trust your memory and your email account, nothing more.

You don't need an over-engineered feature such as multi-signature transactions. You don't need to keep a Bitcoin private key on your phone, on your computer and with a third-party. You only need yourself. This is sensible design at its finest.

I really don't get what you mean by this. You enter what's on what's on your memory, it's intercepted, your funds are gone. It's not only your memory that you need to trust, but also, for instance, the device you are entering those "credentials".

I like blockchain.info's wallet, but these are two unrelated concepts. Multi-signature transactions allow you to utilize the network's power to protect yourself from those attacks. I can't think of any other way to create a fool-proof measure against compromised devices, can you?

There's the method of not using a compromised device and not making it probable for your device to be compromised in the first place. If you're not spreading how much money you have along with your IP address everywhere, you shouldn't have to worry about people putting keyloggers on your computer and phone.

A hacking independent from this is extremely unlikely if you have sensible security practices...

Maybe this wallet isn't for morons. However, getting multi-signature protection to the average user and morons is a problem unto itself.

As for a simple solution to a compromised device, you can always use a javascript-based virtual keyboard.

Okay. Can you at least tell us where that Green Giant quote was posted?

I guess that if this is real and SR is on the way out the best thing to do for people who want Bitcoin to survive is to try to get more real exchange going on in the currency.

uuuh, how about just make a new 'SR'? or several

Certainly an option! It'd still create the general PR problems for Bitcoin that SR has brought us, but at least it'd be exchange.

The Silk Road forums. Main board. First page.

I am not sure if this forum allows links to that place or not.
703  Economy / Speculation / Re: Expect Decline: Silkroad suffering turmoil. Paxum lowers short-term confidence. on: February 12, 2012, 11:10:03 PM
I am reading some threads on the Silk Road and a lot of them are about sellers experiencing glitches in withdrawing their funds. The Paxum resignation could bring some bad psych to the mix.

Until sellers begin to be able to claim their Bitcoins and Silk Road proves to us that it is in order, we should expect a decline in Bitcoin confidence. There are unjustified rumors about Silk Road just letting Bitcoin funds roll-in and then stealing them all away in a MyBitcoin-like fashion.

We'll see what happens all in good time.

May I remind you that The Silk Road is the biggest economic market in the Bitcoin community.

12/02/2012 04:34:08 AM UTC - in 5hrs it will have been 72hrs since my transfer going missing, with only a reply from SR to apologies and say it will be sorted soon, this is not good enough, SR has left me stranded owing suppliers money & making me look bad to them. This is not the first time this has happened and doubt it will be the last. I have had many issues with SR in the last 2 months & this has to be the last straw,i am done with this!!

In 1-2 weeks time i am leaving SR for good, as i cannot work with my funds being held from me for 72hrs reducing in value & not knowing if i will ever even get them. it is evident from SR support's reply that they themselves can do nothing and they are waiting for DPR to come online and "sort" the situation which they claim will be tonight. the whole thing is an unprofessional joke & now many members on the forums are talking about receiving 10x the amount of BTC that they actually withdrew, WHAT THE FUCK!!!!

Whats the point in letting SR earn a commission on my sales when i don't actually get to see the BTC myself!!! DPR sort your shit out, this place has gone down hill so much, i use to like working from here now it is a chore & i hardly update my menu or list even a 1/3 of the items of have to hand.

Bullshit! Post your source.

I plead for removal of "Boss" and "Andrew Bitcoiner" for trying to bribe an admin.

Pretty low.

Since when was the forum a government?

That's a good idea of using 'The Silk Road' as well to hide your transaction.  I've set the Bitcoin client up to use Tor and am getting the following error message -

Feb 12 22:03:21.141 [Warning] Your application (using socks4 to port 8333) is giving Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. For more information, please see https://wiki.torproject.org/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#SOCKSAndDNS.

Huh

Bitcoin doesn't use DNS as far as I know. Don't worry about it.

708  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info/wallet is the BEST Bitcoin client as-of-date. on: February 12, 2012, 08:57:19 PM
I suggest everybody else do the same. Desktop-based clients are a dead-end path. The browser is the inevitable future.

good idea. except that the bitcoin network is gone then. very sad. but we still have our cool browsers to look at meaningless numbers...

No, miners will still charge fees and have incentive to maintain the network through servers. It shouldn't be up to the user to waste their computing power on the network to manage and view their funds. The cost is better burdened upon those managing transactions and mining the currency. It's simply more efficient that way and people can use Bitcoin from any device.
709  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info/wallet is the BEST Bitcoin client as-of-date. on: February 12, 2012, 08:21:01 PM

The fee is abit steeper than the standard client, fixed at 0.01 even for TX that would be ok without any fee at all (goes to blockchain.info if none is needed for the network afaik).

It may encourage competition which is always a good thing if .01 ever becomes significant enough.

Is stability relevant if it isn't relevant to most people trading the respective commodity?

Id say it is if most people dont use it for anything other than speculation because of its instability. Nice catch 22.
Then the speculation will inevitably fulfill the desire of stability.

As for the "Tragedy of the Common", that's easily resolved by ownership of the resources involved: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLirNeu-A8I

People aren't going to let their Bitcoins go to nothing if they value the product itself and people do.

So, where do you stand on the OP?

I tend to agree, but I see it as inevitable. Bitcoin being what it is, completely unregulated and its value for 99.9% determined by speculation, I cant see how it will ever obtain price stability. I dont like that, but I cant see a solution for it either, so if I were a speculator Id either sign up for his newsletter or start my own if I had enough funds to make sure my initial predictions came true.

If people truly want price stability, it will come in one way or another without compromising Bitcoin as a whole. I mean, all it takes is the majority of traders sticking to one price while they reflect the will of the people buying it.

Right now it's just not important to enough people. That's not a problem from what I can see.

Insider trading for stocks is a crime. Do you think it ought no to be?

Bitcoin is not a stock. Should Gavin be allowed to trade Bitcoins?

Edit: I picked the most "insider" person I could think of.  Wink

If Gavin's actions or knowledge would have a significant impact on bitcoin's future exchange rate, then we have a far bigger problem then him doing insider trading. So yes, its absolutely fine if Gavin trades, he wouldnt or at least shouldnt have any private knowledge that will affect exchange rates.

So, where do you stand on the OP?
He knows what's best for Bitcoin and whoever disagrees is irrational.

If Gavin's actions or knowledge would have a significant impact on Bitcoin, I imagine a network fork would inevitably happen and the original Bitcoin network going the way of SolidCoin.

We need to think in terms of results.

Consider this scenario:

An oil well estimated to yield 10 billion gallons of oil is found off of the coast of Texas.

Oil traders hear about this and immediately start selling their shares of oil with the knowledge that the extra supply will lower the price of oil in the long term.

As they sell, the price of oil drops.

As the price of oil drops, gasoline prices drop.

You benefit by paying less at the pump for gas.

This, from not a drop of oil being extracted.

Would you forbid this type of speculation from happening?
As soon as I would restrict oil owners from trading and using their oil as they please. Do the oil traders own their oil or is it owned by a power higher than themselves? That's the true question.

As for your scenario, I don't see who is harmed involuntarily. Everybody who deals in oil accepts it as a volatile commodity; otherwise they won't be in business for long.

Insider trading for stocks is a crime. Do you think it ought no to be?
It's a crime for ordinary men. Insider Trading laws only exist to allow powerful men to have a monopoly on insider information such as politicians and higher businessmen.

As far as I can see, it's only a crime if you can't get away with it.

In the future of crypto-currency and decentralized security exchanges, insider trading will be the norm, the standard. Nothing will be able to stop it.

It's a part of nature. Some people will always have access to information that others don't. Some kids are read to and recieve a grand education, others recieve less formal education and choose to specialize in other things. One is not neccessarily worse off but just has to take a different path. I see nothing bad about that.

717  Economy / Speculation / Re: S3052 and Manipulation Techniques on: February 12, 2012, 07:06:57 PM
The issue here is some people believe its a crime to value and trade commodities based on needs and wants other than their own. They believe it's irrational to want to use Bitcoins just to trade and play with when they just want to use them as currency. Supply-and-demand makes it more convenient for them to buy and sell from these people with conflicting missions. They don't like that.

They consider it a question of morality. They believe Bitcoins being only used for their needs and wants is a universal good.

I consider it only a matter of emotional preference.

Might makes reality and Bitcoin is a very powerful tool. No authority besides the trading parties involved can unilaterally convey how Bitcoin should and should not be traded. If restrictions are instilled on the current marketplaces, new and freer ones will pop up in its place.

People are free to trade as they please in the Bitcoin world. We better start getting used to it.

All you can do is attempt to share your culture and what you feel should be done in hopes that others may agree.
Get out of my thread, Atlas. You should be contained to Politics & Society where your pseudo-philosophical babble belongs to.

Thanks.
I think you are mistaking me for somebody else.

:)thak useful link
i set 9051 sock4 port( such using my tor client) it is enough for saferty using?

can i launch bit coin when tor is not launching?

Yes, the port is correct. You want to make sure Tor is fully launched before launching Bitcoin otherwise you may inadvertently reveal your IP.
