221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Satoshi was not an unknown person, would Bitcoin have turned out different? on: January 20, 2014, 12:59:32 AM
Satoshi decentralised himself.

Satoshi decided that he wanted to learn everything. This would be a task that would take an infinite number of lifetimes, and involve living an infinite number of lives. He therefore decided to run the task in parallel as a recurring process.

Encryption and duplication seem to be sufficient for keeping a piece of information safe. Could anybody tell me why this is necessary in the first place?

Safely storing coins needs to be simple for the less tech-savvy.

224  Economy / Speculation / Re: I AM HODLING on: January 19, 2014, 07:30:20 AM
Just for the record, is it still hodling if you trade and end up with more bitcoins in the end or are those people traitors?

It is called gambling. Not the same as hodl.
If you increase your btc 1,000% by trading, and sell the 900% profit, but are still holding the original position, is that hodling?

No that's called winning.
225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Futurology? Bitcoin PC's and Bitcoin OS. on: January 19, 2014, 12:09:50 AM
Before i saw the link, i thought "you mean like a computer with a GPU...".  The idea is a year to late.

Open source CPUs are a pipe dream because of the massive cost required to develop and fab silicon.  It might be workable if you went back some generations and utilised some old ex-patent architecture.  iirc China has done something like this, basing homegrown processors based on MIPS.  You cant do DIY hardware in your garage/basement/shed/whatever like you can with software.

Not yet. What are the chances of 3D printing making this sort of thing a reality?

Zero, at least for the foreseeable.  You'd be talking about 3D printing at a microscopic to atomic level.  Thats several generations (read decades) of 3D print technology away, there probably would be home photolithography before that.  Bear in mind today's semiconductor fabrication plants cost several billion to build, its not about to scale down for homebrew.

I'll take your word for it as its not my area of expertise, but sometimes technology moves quicker than expected (if there is a breakthrough in one particular field which then ripples through all of the others)
226  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bulls and Bears! Who will win? on: January 19, 2014, 12:04:48 AM
Didn't know there was a contest.

Sure there's a contest. Everyone throws up a chart, chats about the latest news, gets pissed that not everyone agrees with them and invariably the thread gets derailed. Eventually the argument is settled by everyone whipping out their dicks and comparing length and girth. Its how the speculation forum works.

A business model for social good

Change.org's mission is to empower people everywhere to create the change they want to see, and we believe the best way to achieve that mission is by combining the values of a non-profit with the flexibility and innovation of a tech startup.
228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Futurology? Bitcoin PC's and Bitcoin OS. on: January 18, 2014, 11:24:29 PM

neato idea, BUT this doesnt change much.  The question is who has the MAJORITY hashing power, giving it to everyone doesn't prevent people from forming pools and profiting from nefarious activity of those pools.

I was thinking about the following:

When the bitcoin will become economically stronger in the (near) future, it could spawn the next generation of personal computers. The processor would be designed from scratch and the specification would be completely open-source for anyone to review. The part of the architecture would be also small ASIC miner(s) presented in such a PC.

The OS will be Linux-derived or created from scratch, and the basic bitcoin software will be build in, so every computer will be also the bitcoin node by default, p2pool, wallet and other software will be also pre-installed. Also, all services requiring privacy will be provided by decentralized blockchain, like for example Bitmessage for communication, etc.

To sum it up, it will be something also Richard Stallman would use (free in the FSF sense), and I believe bitcoin could make this economically viable. I wonder what do you think about this idea.

If every new computer had a built in ASIC of the latest design, the majority would probably be the masses.

Bulls will win because technology.

Thanks for reading.

Critics would have used flaws of the person to attack Bitcoin. It's better for Satoshi to remain an unknown, that way Bitcoin stands on its own properties, without being exposed to the character traits of its creator.

Excellent observation

What? Apple trying to create and patent their own mobile payments system? Did not see this one coming...  Roll Eyes
233  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Futurology? Bitcoin PC's and Bitcoin OS. on: January 16, 2014, 01:15:13 PM
I like the OP's idea, sounds like something for people to start working on. Completely open source from the hardware through to the OS? I'd contribute towards a project like that.
234  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hashers are not miners, and Bitcoin network doesn't need them. on: January 16, 2014, 02:28:22 AM
I have read several of these threads now, sparked I presume by the recent scare with Ghash.io acquiring nearly 50% of the network hashrate. This is a good thing: please keep making these threads to get the message across.

This is actually quite hypocritical of me to say, because I haven't been doing my part towards this issue - Its just more convenient to pick one of the well known pools and then you end up sticking with it, plus you have the interface to check your hashrate and auto payout options etc. From now on I will only point hashing power towards P2Pool, which I have know about and advocated for a while but not actually been using I'm ashamed to admit...
235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why can't all hash power contributed to mining a coin be one huge pool? And on: January 15, 2014, 03:19:48 PM

Just completed another successful purchase  Smiley

Took a few days before the order was shipped, but I did get tracking as soon as it was sent out. I wasn't worried because I have bought from these guys before and the service was top quality. Parcel arrived in pretty good time and everything which I had ordered was there.

I have just placed another order - I think something might have gone wrong during checkout though - sent BTC to the specified address but instead of getting a confirmation message, the site took me back to the start of the checkout process Huh

Anyway, I'm sure it will be fine, I feel I'm in safe hands with Amagi Metals.

If you haven't already, please e-mail us at support@amagimetals.com. We can verify the order was established.

I emailed support yesterday, got a response today. The order has been placed on my account, just awaiting confirmation that the payment was received and then my order should be marked as processing. I'll update when I get tracking.

Thanks!
237  Economy / Speculation / Re: Anyone trading bitcoins profitably here? on: January 14, 2014, 01:05:24 AM
Hey,

I'm interested if anyone's here trading Bitcoin profitably here (short term buying/selling)

If so, I'd like to hear a little bit more about it, maybe get some blog links etc. Haven't found anything decent yet.

Thanks

My strategy isn't terribly scientific, but it works.  Sell bad news, buy when the bad news has been absorbed.  Absorption rate depends on the severity of the news.  Terrible news takes 24 hours or so.  Work back from there.  The Chinese have a considerable advantage using this technique as the FUD originates from China, generally.  The guys who preach TA are generally wrong.  I've tried those TA subscription services just to see if their claims are legit.  They are not.  Save your money.

100% this. TA for BTC is shit. The BTC market does not react like a traditional market. Its VERY volatile and any piece of news, good or bad, will send the price in huge swings.  Play those swings and you can make quite a bit of money (or better yet, more BTC). Daily.

I myself trade the LTC/BTC ratio. This way, I am never a bagholder for USD or fiat.

Interesting.  So the assumption is news that drives down BTC will drive down LTC w.r.t. BTC?

That part I have found hard to predict. I just set my buy sell order and the daily fluctuations take care of the rest. So not really much analysis on my part other than watching the ratio for 6 months and seeing the opportunity. Sometimes it takes 72 hours, but every buy or sell order has been filled. And I've NEVER sold or bought at a loss because I am 100% content holding either LTC or BTC. Its win-win. Honestly, I can't believe everyone doesn't do it.

I agree with this 100% - its literally amazing. I have no trading experience prior to discovering crypto, and yet I have never lost a trade on LTC/BTC.

Also, If you're willing to wait months rather than days, you stand a good chance of catching the real big moves and getting back 3, 4, maybe even 5 times your coins. Play with short and long timeframes, short (daily) to keep you entertained while you're waiting for the big move, and long (months) so that you really clean up when that move happens.

Fuck that stupid old hag.

If she didn't want her son to die from a drugs overdose then she should have brought him up better.

Her son's death is her fault and I am going to start a petition to ban neglectful parenting;

https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/ban_stupid_old_fucking_bitch_blaming_world_for_her_own_guilt

That was my initial reaction: ignorance can be annoying. But you have to understand, her son has just died and she's devastated. Also from reading what she wrote, she clearly has no understanding of Bitcoin and in her mind she thinks the Bitcoin trader/exchange is somehow in control and therefore responsible for how her son chose to use his coins. (which in my opinion would be wrong anyway, because by 21 I think you should be capable of deciding how you want to spend your own money)

Just wondering why you would spend £5000 on 2 ANTMiners when you would have saved nearly £2000 buying them directly from sushi or one of the official resellers?

Price is due to be lowered. We have been very busy with the launch! The first units we ordered from BITMAIN cost us 4.25 BTC each, when BTC was over $1000
The problem is all you are is a reseller. There is nothing we can't just get cheaper directly from manufacturers.

We are predominantly a reseller at this stage, yes. We want to cater to the market who may not be as comfortable with obtaining a large amount of Bitcoins and then sending them to a foreign country. We also try to keep things in stock for immediate or next day shipping.

But for those of you who prefer to buy your hardware directly, we also want to build up an inventory of other things which Bitcoiners are likely to want, so that you can spend your mined coins directly with us. Unfortunately at this stage, there still aren't nearly as many places in the UK to spend BTC as we would like, so we're trying to change that. Post any suggestions here!
