41  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN][Group Buy] Cointerra Shares ฿2 = 25GH/s *2nd Miner PAID! on: September 06, 2013, 07:01:47 PM
Let's make it a GOOD Friday.. Miner 2 has been PAID!

Excellent Cool Tho that brings up the following questions.

1) I still see that there are 9 shares to buy, and the topic is labeled [OPEN]. If the miner's already been paid for, what would a newcomer's money be used for?

2) Why not just keep it at 71 shares? That way the value of all of our shares is increased Wink
42  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN][Group Buy] Cointerra Shares ฿4.5=50GH/s *2nd Miner on: August 31, 2013, 12:20:57 AM
Ya, just a Chrome plugin messing with the page. lets hope our 2nd funding can get into batch 1 Smiley

I'd be pretty sour if it didnt. D: Btw, if we ever feel like pulling out before the order is placed, can we do that? I probably should've asked that BEFORE buying the shares, but oh well. o.o

44  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: First prepaid card to exchange Bitcoins on: August 17, 2013, 09:37:01 AM
Finally received my card but it will not activate using supplied instructions.

At least you looked to read those instructions.  I wasnt privy enough to check the documentation and wasn't able to activate the card. I tried contacting them but when I told them that I lost the PIN or instructions to activate it, they simply refused to respond. Such lousy customer service. -_-

Part of it was my fault I'll admit..however they are also at fault for false advertising. As I was ordering the card I saw nothing explaining how I'd have to activate it upon receiving it. I figured it was something I could just use right away, and thats the impression they gave, so under that impression why would anyone hurry to read the documentation? I was just excited to finally get it after a week of waiting. Such nonsense..they're not getting any more of my bitcoins.
45  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN][LTC] Online Litecoin wallet - LTC-Wallet.com on: July 01, 2013, 06:58:10 PM
Holy hell...I'm fuming and at the same time disappointed..I put over 300 LTC back a couple months ago before this "interest" was even a feature (I wasn't even aware that this started until today)..I simply try to find a safe, online place to store my LTC and wait for it to increase in value..I see it going up, I go to check, and suddenly the guy who made it is a scammer. I have no idea if he planned this from the get-go, damn I'm pissed the hell off. I wish there was some way to hold people like this accountable.. -___-

47  Economy / Economics / Re: [POLL] Anyone ever get a local store to accept Bitcoin? on: May 28, 2013, 05:29:45 AM
Who is going to take the time to explain bitcoin just to be able to pay in it when they are probably the only customer who ever will.

Fair point, and I have figured the same thing when deciding against proposing Bitcoin in this manner, but I'd still like to at least get the word out, as I'm sure plenty of people in this community would like to do. Also, I was pretty curious as to whether people were at least thinking things along these lines Tongue
48  Economy / Economics / Re: [POLL] Anyone ever get a local store to accept Bitcoin? on: May 27, 2013, 10:52:40 PM
I heard there is a district in Berlin where many shops accept Bitcoin. Does anybody have any more details about that?

Well I just found this article about it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/apr/26/bitcoins-gain-currency-in-berlin
And it's pretty awesome stuff!
49  Economy / Economics / [POLL] Anyone ever get a local store to accept Bitcoin? on: May 27, 2013, 10:36:08 PM
As stated in the poll question..also if you answered "yes", I'd encourage you give an example(s) of a business(es) that you've successfully dealt with. I'm just curious to see if people really are doing this kinda stuff or not. I personally haven't gotten around to it, as I feel a bit apprehensive. Also, if this has been asked before then you can point me to the topic Tongue

52  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Truly Localizing a Crytpocurrency: Ideas? on: May 22, 2013, 12:44:32 AM
I've been bouncing ideas on how to accomplish a true localization of an altcoin's network to a certain community, however this is coming from someone who is no expert in networking and network infrastructure. I have a bare understanding of the composition of bitcoin's network (nodes communicating through TCP). But the biggest challenge, it seems, in creating a local cryptographic currency is how to limit mining to a specific geographic area. I'm sure if I were to state that such a currency would only be used in a specific town, people here probably wouldn't care too much and throw ridiculous amounts of hashing power at it, try to open an exchange, and dump the coin, which has been done with several alts already (even though localization was none of their intentions). The more I think about it, the more it points to the use of a central authority, which I know plenty of people on here, including myself, aren't very fond of. However, I'm still open to that idea if that's what has to be done.

A couple thoughts I've had include:

  • Creating a central website where people registering would be required to enter their SSN to be validated within a certain period of time, resulting in only residents of whatever community to be allowed to register successfully. From there, residents would be allowed to download a miner, client, and so forth (provided there are means on said website to help those who aren't tech savvy). However there are two caveats to this: 1) It'd require the cooperation of a local government to conduct said SSN validation. 2) It may have to be closed source, considering that nearly anyone on here (or elsewhere) can compile source code and run it pretty easily, thus destroying the integrity of the aforementioned security measure.
  • As mentioned in elciptic's topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=212430.0 (albeit in a different context)
Creating a new network paradigm for the altcoin to run on. Not sure what this would entail or if it's even possible or practical, but I think it's worth discussing.

Also, feel free to chip in on whether this idea is even worth pursuing or not. Tongue
53  Economy / Economics / Re: Localizing a cryptocurrency: is it possible? on: May 19, 2013, 07:49:19 PM
Sure, just set up some PKI and require that blocks be valid, and signed by a key that was signed by the central CA.

That might sound sensible, but there's a key problem: who/what will be the CA? Would people really trust me/a small group of techy people more than their local government? In the case of the govt being the CA, then that kinda defeats the whole purpose of making a cryptographic local currency; it may as well be a paper local currency. Although to localize it I'd see why that d make sense. Maybe there would be a different way to ensure the mining of said currency would only occur within a specific geographic area. I still have lots to learn about network infrastructure seeing as I'm more of a hardware guy, but I'm sure if this ends up being more discussed then more savvy people could contribute ideas.

I think about this a lot. I think there is a lot of potential here.

People converting their labor into local cryptocurrency.

Well in that case, perhaps you, me, and a couple other people aren't the only ones considering this idea. We should probably raise more discussion about this idea to see if there's a practical way of making it specific to an area while keeping its minting decentralized (like anyone being able to download a mining application for this "coin", but shares being only accepted within a certain geographic area; it should deincentivise outside parties from trying to mine said "coin").
54  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Standards for Listing a Coin on an Exchange on: May 15, 2013, 09:15:59 PM
I'm not sure what's involved in listing a coin on an exchange, as an exchange operator.  In theory I agree.  I would certainly hope that the exchange operators aren't saying "I'm not going to list XXX coin because we're too good for that coin! We have a reputation to keep up!"  That would be foolish.

I'm not too sure about that..let's pretend MtGox accepted almost every altcoin out there. I think that'd discredit them in the eyes of the mainstream, and this is critical if were ever gonna see these types of ideas reach significantly beyond these forums/niche audience. Because after all, the mainstream doesn't share our view of the free market as we know. However I would agree with exchanges setting standards that people should adhere to concerning cryptocurrencies. Of course this would all be voluntary, and if an exchange wanted few or no standards, that's fine too (just think of bter "spreading its legs" and being "slutty" Wink )

There is a tone of crappy compagny with crappy stocks out there, just look at most of the pink sheet.

That may be true (if I'm reading that correctly), but still this community and cryptocurrencies in general have to give a good first impression to the mainstream, and if we appear to just be a bunch of wild speculators and appear to have no professional standards. we won't get very far as a whole. However I'm sure plenty of us know that Tongue

STAHP with these useless alts! This is the third or fourth coin I've seen today! Why not focus on getting a few alts to be accepted by more merchants?!
59  Economy / Economics / Re: Localizing a cryptocurrency: is it possible? on: May 14, 2013, 11:01:37 PM
This is a great idea. Local currencies make communities stronger. If people hold local currency more, they shop at walmart less. Screw walmart! Communities might even get to the point where they can almost feed themselves. Screw food that is shipped 1500 miles to your plate on average!

It's open source so you can do what you need for your locality. Mine only based on geographic location if you want, it can be done. Centrally issue or tailor new coin production like you need to. Issue physical tokens for them. Peg their value against the dollar, if you want. Set up an exchange with other cryptocoins, if you can do it safely, so people can easily exchange them to buy shit on the interwebs. I'm just spouting out shit, these may not be good ideas. It's open source so you can do pretty much whatever you need to do.

I'd look at successful, beneficial ones like Ithaca Hours and maybe see how you can leverage the software to make it easier or improve it.

Do it! It could be the future.

Glad to see someone who would agree with me xD I've been interested in doing something for my community for a while, and particularly fascinated by having choices in money. I see the possible strengths that could come about using a local currency, and I've been bouncing ideas for a local cryptocurrency on and off for a couple months. Some of them include:

  • Use of Scrypt-Jane, allowing for the average, not-so-tech savy or wealthy folk to mine it with CPUs.
  • Setting the hard limit based on the population of the city (I was thinking some constant N * Population)
  • 1-Minute confirmation times, preferably shorter (though that's debatable due to the number of confirmations necessary to make transactions reliably secure)
  • Block Reward would largely depend on the constant N and the confirmation times

There are a few districts in my city that are rather run-down and have seen many small businesses shut down over the years, so I'm hoping a local currency could make that bounce back over time. However, the problem lies in selling the idea to people and where to start. Also, this list will take time to develop and grow, so it'd be very tentative as of now.
