521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: somone steal btc from my wallet on: December 21, 2016, 12:30:33 AM
Was that the total amount of Bitcoin in the address at the time?
Also, how have you accessed that address? You would need to check any computer and phone it was accessed from to make sure you were not compromised.
Change any passwords from a clean computer and enable 2FA on any account you can.
522  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin still suited to low amount transactions? on: December 20, 2016, 11:51:07 PM
the problem is that many devs are american and small minded about the world so while they say that 7cents is cheap for a fee they are not thinking of the unbanked world.

Yes as pointed out, while seven cents may not be a large amount of money to most people with access to the internet, to some people this is a much greater amount of money.
Its certainly a good point of debate. What is the appropriate rate for a transaction, should it remain scaling or a fixed rate?
These are important factors in deciding who is the target Bitcoin audience, actually.
523  Economy / Speculation / Re: touch down to 800$ is near on: December 20, 2016, 11:29:19 PM
Price is up about %1 so either $800 or close to it depending on what source you are using.
Slowly climbing over the last couple hours. Is $800 the new bottom?
524  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 20, 2016, 11:15:58 PM
So I really want to buy into Monero, but BTC seems to keep slowly climbing today.
Anyone got predictions on where Bitcoin will top or Monero will bottom?
525  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 20, 2016, 10:56:26 PM
Sold everything I had near the top to make a small profit.
Will buy back in once we drop a few points. What do you guys think the bottom is?
I would be surprised if we dropped below 0.0038 something any time soon since there seems to be much stronger buy support than sell, for right now at least.
526  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 18, 2016, 02:05:39 AM
...the Genesis code (some refer to as M1, the code you are running) is getting rather long in the tooth.  We are working to get Factom Federation out ASAP (what people cal M2), and you can take a preview of the new code by running a node on the Test Net now.   The new code base handles multiple federated servers for greater security and distributed authority.   We have vastly reduced the footprint in memory, use of CPU, and increases transaction rates.   The new code even has a nice control panel and built in explorer.

Paul

Thanks for the reply Paul! Much appreciated. I was beginning to feel like this might be the case, but wanted to get some feedback to be sure.

Im really liking the program/ interface, its pretty well written, especially for what is essentially a Beta program.
If the devs need any assistance in testing, or access to my log files, I would be more than happy to provide this info.
I really believe in the long-term potential of Factom, and would do anything I could to get involved and lend a helping hand.

Thanks again, friend!!!
527  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 16, 2016, 11:06:51 PM
Did you get synced? I have waited some long times before the new blocks start syncing, maybe it scans the previous blocks and this takes time (I'm just guessing here). When I have another terminal open and enter    factom-cli get height      I see that the action has been performed in the factomd terminal and each time a different value is returned, which lets me know that it is working, as also checking CPU usage. I have had disconnections at times, not since the last released binaries,  but it tels me that in the factomd terminal. I haven't had any stalls though....   Maybe you have synced now,  if not at least this give you a bump....

Yeah I ended up going to bed and let factomd do its thing overnight.
Woke up and it was synched.
Just wondering if this is normal behavior for it to take a few hours to catch up if you stop the service for a day or two, or if something is causing delay.
528  Economy / Economics / Re: A ransomware acts like a pyramid scheme and its effect in the Bitcoin market on: December 16, 2016, 04:26:42 AM
There have been groups estimated to be making up to a few million dollars a month, though, so thats a lot of Bitcoins being purchased by the vidtims.
Unfortunately, things like ransomware and kids buying drugs on the darknet are the first things most people hear about Bitcoin.
Although some people will pay the ransom, most just lose their files. The ones that pay are probably left with a bad impression of Bitcoin.
Overall the volume being generated is not worth the negative connotations and press generated.
529  Economy / Economics / Re: Investing Bitcoins? on: December 16, 2016, 02:54:00 AM
Personally, my money is 50% invested in bitcoins.

As I've mentioned before, I feel like a 50% BTC, 50% altcoin investment is pretty solid.
Put half your money into Bitcoin and pick two or three coins you think have solid potential (Monero, Factom and Burst for me) for the rest.
Of course, that's only crypto-related investment. If you can afford it, some precious metals like Gold, Silver, Platinum, Rhodium, Palladium, etc.
Or some forex, stocks, bonds, commodities.
530  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 16, 2016, 02:42:40 AM
Okay so I'm running into the issue where factomd.exe no longer syncs to the current block again.
Everything was working correctly a few days ago.
I stopped factomd and the walletapp and did some Monero mining on this PCs GPU.
After stopping the Monero miner and starting factomd I get the
"BMGR: at 67214: syncing to block height 67730 from peer..." message and nothing updates.

The Control Panel states-
Last update: more than 26 minute(s) ago

System
Factom Mode: Full Node (Client)
Go compiler version: go1.7.3
Legal
Copyright 2015 Factom Foundation
Use of this source code is governed by the MIT
license that can be found in the LICENSE file.

Status
Directory Block Height: 67215
Factoid Transactions Processed: 84803

And has been sitting for almost 30 minutes with no update.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this delay normal? Is there a queue to sync your local blockchain from the server?
What messages should I be looking for in the log to troubleshoot this?
531  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: altcoin on: December 14, 2016, 10:41:59 PM
Monero and Factom look promising for a long-term investment. Both seem like really good projects that have a solid future.

I'm actually moving my coins off the exchange since I plan on holding these for a while.
532  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [FLDC] halving in 2 days on: December 14, 2016, 10:07:50 PM
There may be a slight increase but the price has gone up so much recently, I wouldn't be surprised if price didn't move much.

Then again, the coin has seen so much action lately it could skyrocket.
Anything is possible and the altcoin market has been so unpredictable lately.
533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Hard Drive stopped spinning - Bitcoin Wallet roughly 1.2 BTC in. on: December 14, 2016, 10:04:24 PM
If I'm reading this right, you have tried reading the hard drive on two different PCs?
If both are not reading it correctly there may be an issue with the drive.

I've had success a couple times using the Linux 'dd' utility to copy a disk that wasn't read by Windows.
You will need a second hard drive that is the same size or larger for the copy, and a Linux box or live CD.
You can run a dd command-
dd if=/dev/old_disk of=/dev/new_disk conv=noerror,sync
"conv=noerror, sync is used for disks with bad blocks, where the intent is to replace bad blocks with zero placeholders and continue copying."

There is also a utility called 'ddrescue' that has been made specifically to recover damaged hard drives.
https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-do-i-save-recover-data-from-crashed-disks-with-dd-and-ddrescue-command.html

Keep in mind that this is not going to work if the drive heads or board are failing physically.
If the board is going bad you have the option to find an second drive of the exact same model and swap the circuit boards.
If the drive heads are stuck or dragging your only option is to send it to a data recovery specialist. (Usually about $700+ dollars depending on the service.)
If you hear any kind of grinding noise when the disk spins up, turn it of immediately or you risk ruining the platters inside completely.
534  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Zcash price will go upto $1000 [Hold your coins] on: December 13, 2016, 01:49:57 AM
Zcash is lucky to be where it is.
Personally I think the coin is total trash and I would never invest one dollar in it, but that's another subject.

For a new coin to be worth close to $50 just shows how much the altcoin market is based purely off hype and speculation.
If you think its going to beat out BTC in price any time soon, I would like some of the drugs you are smoking because you are high as hell LOL.  Grin
535  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 13, 2016, 01:43:13 AM
So do you guys think Jaxx having Monero integration is enough to push up the price, or do we need to wait for an "official" wallet to really raise the price?
(Or are we already priced-in to the anticipation of a wallet?)
I've never used Jaxx wallet and I'm wondering if anyone has extensive experience with it, and if adding a GUI will prompt more places to accept Monero.
(Which is all I think we really need to break the $10 price point.)
536  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Dogecoin is one of best altcoins, easy exchange to/from BTC, fast transfers on: December 13, 2016, 01:33:22 AM
Dogecoin has actually been really stable lately.
Anyone looking to make a 1% profit can easily buy Doge when it dips and sell it on the rise a week or two later.
It's not the huge profit that most people are looking for in the alt-coin market, but you can always count on the price being within a couple satoshi of where it was,
and there are still decent volumes on most of the exchanges.
537  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 13, 2016, 01:28:25 AM
Okay it looks like I was able to correct my syncing issue.
(I'll post what I did, hopefully it helps someone in the future.)

I had a few things running at the same time as factomd, including the Burst coin wallet and miner.
I noticed Burst miner had started throwing errors at the same time factomd stopped progressing.
Maybe there was some conflict with the factomd process and another program I was running. I have the log messages if anyone from the Factom team is interested.

I killed the process, rebooted the machine, and went into the Factom directory located at- C:\Users\Shiroslullaby\.factom
and renamed the ldb folder.
I restarted factomd and let it synch again, this time it seemed to sync to the current block, and my wallet app was showing the same info as the block explorer for my address.

Hopefully I don't have any errors in the future and will be continuing to test the wallet beta.

538  Economy / Gambling / Re: THE BETSOFT SCAM AND HOW THEY HAVE BEEN RIPPING YOU OFF! on: December 12, 2016, 12:48:47 AM
This is exactly why online gaming needs to be regulated.
If online sites were forced to have their software audited to be provably fair, at least something could be done to protect the players.
As of now you are basically giving money to a business, hoping they aren't cheating you, and hoping they pay you when you win.

That doesn't even begin to get into the subject of the amount of tax that would be generated and the good things that could be done with this money.
(A whole separate reason to regulate online gaming.)
539  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: December 11, 2016, 11:36:16 PM
Is this the correct thread for technical questions?

I downloaded and installed the Windows 64bit client and started factomd.exe
It seems like the blockchain has been sitting at the same block for a while. I'm getting the message:
[INF] BMGR: At 56819: syncing to block height 67136 from peer 52.19.117.149: 8108

How long should I expect it to take for the blockchain to fully sync?
Will I get messages as it moves to other blocks so I can see the progress?
Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and see if/ why the sync is stuck?

540  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Help a noob create a coin on: December 11, 2016, 11:30:50 PM
The problem is that if someone who isn't a strong coder with good technical knowledge of how crypto and other fundamentals of currencies work,
there is the good possibility that someone could find a backdoor to create coins/ take over accounts/ crash the network.
Which means investors could potentially lose their coins.
Its a dangerous thing to mess with peoples money.
