861  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Quark is a loser in 2014, Doge is a winner, and how this relates to Vertcoin on: February 03, 2014, 04:47:51 PM
Two words: Irrational Markets

To put it simply and concisely, we all know that different markets act and function differently. There doesn't necessarily have to be a reason for something to spike, although usually those things have strong fundamentals. But you can never count out something just because it goes against the grain.
862  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would you do if you had mined 500 BTC in 2011 and still have it on: February 03, 2014, 04:28:32 PM
Just as a note, 500 BTC is $400k. That might sound like a lot, but really, for the average person, that's maybe 1/4 of life earnings.

I'd sit on 250 BTC, I'd cash out 100 and put into market investments, play the alt-currency markets with 100, and cash out the remaining 50 as play money and to give me the vacation that I feel I deserve.
863  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How many houses will burn down due to mining? on: February 03, 2014, 04:09:47 PM
I know that this may seem like scaremongering, but it is a legitimate concern: overloading and causing a fire is a horrible thing. However, in most cases, unless your house hasn't been retrofitted for a long time, you're probably safe; in essence, if you have a breaker your risk goes down significantly.

And as mentioned already; there is a lot of informed and experienced members on this forum, and that in and of itself cuts down risk significantly too.

Now if you're running a whole bunch of high-powered miners, that's a different story. But at that point, if you're investing that much money you'd be stupid to not do any research and the sort.

Edit: the correct word is your, not you're. Gah...

I could imagine Bitcoin having a market of about $25 billion which would be around $2000 each. But much more beyond that is hard to imagine. I can't imagine BTC permeating into the mainstream consciousness too much more this year; and I wouldn't know where another spike like with China would come from.
866  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Dogecoin vs Litecoin, Nothing but the Truth. | WSC Team on: January 31, 2014, 04:00:58 PM
So many back and forths each day with DOGE. For some reason though, when I look at DOGE, it reminds me of the Macarena or Gangnam Style. So yeah, the hype is gonna last a while, but I'm still not convinced that this has long lasting and staying  attributes. Just my thoughts...

Maybe.  Lolcat is 7 years old this year and continues to make millions for Cheezburger.  Some meme's are better than others...

That is true. Although from what I can tell, the market share (not revenue) of Cheezburger has gone on a stagnant/slightly downward trend these last few years. If DOGE was to stagnate in market share, that would be a very disastrous thing for DOGE (because of the mining protocol). As a note, I haven't put a ton of analytics into this stuff, so even I'm taking my views with a grain of salt. The only way to really know things is by waiting.

"Love... It's a motherfucker."

I feel you. I could've done so much more with my time had it not been for that particular ex. I even ended up house sitting her shitty apartment (complete with two cats; I hate cats) while she was off fucking some other dude on a film set for a month. I'm generalizing, but it's all truth.

Though now I'm happy! With the woman of my dreams, she's crazy about me but not crazy on her own. Pretty great!
Glad to hear that! I know that sometimes we have to face adversity first and stumble a bunch before we find our greatest story. Always glad to hear of times when in the end it's great. It just sucks for me because I wanted to believe that I had already found it. Oh well.

I'm still fairly raw with my issue (she's still yet to move all of her stuff out, but I gave her an ultimatum of two more weeks to get all her stuff out) so it's focus on me time! I've cut her and my former "best friend" out of my life and doing things that make me happy. I hope it ends up well for me too in the end!

Moved to a another country I disliked for 2 years.

Dang. What country? And why? What was the thought process behind that?

I think that when you're in love, sometimes there is no thought process. At least it feels accurate in my case.

One of my exes... I honestly have no clue why I got with her and why it even lasted a year and a half. Truly a horrible and crazy (not just regular lady crazy) person.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Seriously.

The thing I posted up earlier is actually a true story for me. I tried making it work, but it didn't. Sometimes I feel like I got the short end of the stick though. Really wished it was over before we got a place together and I bought a ring and put down money for our future and stuff. Sometimes we humans are so ridiculous.

871  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [LTC] Changing the litecoin Proof of Work function to avoid ASIC mining? on: January 30, 2014, 06:30:48 PM
Although the votes are skewed towards yes, I'm glad a significant amount of talk is for not changing it.

As mentioned earlier, doing so would lead to a slippery slope; and is just a means of delaying an "inevitability." The issue is that the premise was already shaky from the start; in such a burgeoning and young area (in technology, no less) a sweeping statement saying that a protocol would be ASIC-Proof was a stretch in itself. And the trickiest thing is how to ensure that the protocol remains ASIC-Proof. If we change it once, and then realize that we were wrong, we'll have to do it again. And again. And again...

I think that the implications of changing are far greater, and more far reaching than leaving it as is. How people react to it is another story (for all we know it could bolster the value of the network), but is it worth the "risk?" It would be much simpler changing the mission statement of LTC in my opinion. Once again though, the reaction to this type of change is unknown. Plus you lose the main "differentiating" feature of LTC. But for me, that is much more worth the "risk" than changing the protocol (and possibly changing it again and again).

I think the loss in credibility of possibly having to change a protocol multiple times far outweighs the credibility loss in changing a relatively young mission statement.

8 Days, 3 Hours, 21 Minutes

But I tend to read more than post. So yeah...

Don't you guys have female friends to give you tips and such?

I have female friends but all they do is feed me that "I'm sure you'll find someone" crap, I think the best moment I ever had was when my Jewellery teacher had the radio on and this radio host was chatting to a girl about someone she dated and she had about 6 boyfriends previously despite being really young which totally describes the situation I'm in. That's the kind of shit I have to deal with here in the UK lol, I swear it's this country and not me that's the problem, the big thing I need right now is money so I can leave and find girls outside which I'm working on right now Tongue.

Hmh, I don't know about dumbest thing, but I did try texting a girl once and that backfired very badly, in fact, because it was text I actually posted the conversation to a friend and even she went "wtf" over the reaction to me trying to ask her out, sometimes I've asked girls I know wtf was going on and nope, just turns out I'm really unlucky and the girls I've tried for are batshit insane lol.

But you know, the batshit insane ones give life that extra little spice.  Wink

Just be sure not to have a lamp thrown at your head. And if does come to that, just make sure you've practiced a lot of dodgeball beforehand. Yay excitement!

I am a follower of the hot/crazy scale Cheesy

I approve (especially since it's a How I Met Your Mother reference)! In theory, one day we all find someone, that for us, is above that line. Or we die miserable and lonely (or awesomely happy depending on your perspective).

Everytime I shower, I use Virgin olive oil to rub my brick hoping I will gain back my lost virginity Roll Eyes

Ha!

Thank you for this hilarity. Now my coworkers think I'm nuts.

The dumbest thing I ever did for love was trying to make it work when it was clear it wasn't going to work. Don't do it, otherwise you're gonna get a place together, be psuedo-happy for a while (cause it's new and everything) but then be pretty unhappy for a while. Then you'll drift apart while still trying to force it to work, and then bam! You'll have to sort through all the crap in the apartment, wait for your ex to move out and move into your ex-best friend's place (because they're shagging now), and somehow figure out how the hell you're going to make the payments on your place by yourself.

Like I said, don't force things if it's clear it isn't gonna work.

Thank goodness I get enough supplementary income from mining...

[Edit:] Forgot to include all the stuff about mental anguish, regrets, break downs at work, sleepless nights, needing to see a counselor, thinking about your psychologists recommendation to take medication, animosity all over, and never seeing a person you care deeply about ever again.
877  Economy / Economics / Re: New Idea to invest my $41,000 dollars - Litecoins to convert in Bitcoins on: January 29, 2014, 06:28:07 PM
I'd say invest into Bitcoins. If you're not willing to divest into multiple alts through some sort of portfolio mechanism (for the amount of money you are considering, 1 alt isn't enough, and it's way too risky; heck not even two is really enough also; in either case, I would only recommend 25% at the most of your investment), then it may not be worth it to just go into only LTC. BTC is relatively stable and continues to have quite strong indications of a bright future (continued adoption, gaining mainstream traction, etc). Litecoin, while steadily gaining more and more traction, doesn't seem to have as strong of an indication.
878  Economy / Speculation / Re: 790 people own half the bitcoins on: January 29, 2014, 06:17:49 PM
This analysis is fascinating; if not slightly scary. It kinda reminds me of the issues throughout history where a very select few hold most of the money. History has shown us what happens in many of these scenarios; but in this new paradigm, can we rebut history?

Admittedly, I understand that balances can still be achieved. Case in point: China owns a near monopoly in the rare earths market (used in much of the electronics market), but other countries have near monopolies on different segments too. Usually, the "damage" comes when powers work in concert. Nonetheless, there isn't inherently necessary. Unfortunately, human nature fails miserably at times...
879  Economy / Speculation / Re: You are offered $5,000 per bitcoin, but can never hold any again on: January 29, 2014, 06:00:38 PM
Okay, so I'm gonna drive at the heart of the question with the following interpretation: I have to convert all of my alts into Bitcoin and cash it all out at $5k a coin right now; additionally, I have to sell all of my mining equipment in BTC and cash that out at $5k a coin and never mine again.

I'd actually have to say yes. With that amount, I could sit work at my current job for 6 more years, let the markets do their thing, and I would hit my retirement goal. And really, that's what I'm striving for.

Wow, the amount of traction NOBLE has gotten over these last few weeks (albeit quietly) is quite astounding. Can't wait to see what lies ahead.
