Why resharing on social media could be making you more stupid

Having to think about whether to share a message may cause 'cognitive overload' that interferes with remembering what it says – and also causes lasting negative effects

Reposting messages on social media makes people stupid, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Cornell and Beijing universities found that the simple act of “retweeting” interfered with people’s understanding of the contents of the message.

Professor Qi Wang, a human development expert at Cornell in the US, said: “Most people don't post original ideas any more. You just share what you read with your friends.

“But they don't realize that sharing has a downside. It may interfere with other things we do.”

Two groups of Chinese students were shown a series of messages on Weibo, a Twitter-like social media platform in China.

One group was then given the choice whether to repost the message or move on to the next one. The other group were not able to retweet.

The students were then tested about the contents of the messages. The group that had to decide whether to repost or not got almost twice as many wrong answers as the students who simply read the messages. The reposters scored particularly badly for messages they chose to share.

The researchers, who published a paper on their work in the journal Computers in Human Behaviour, said the problem could be caused by “cognitive overload” about the decision whether or not to share the message.

The two groups were also given a test to see how well they understood an article from the New Scientist magazine. The group who had been reposting messages performed less well than the others.

“The sharing leads to cognitive overload, and that interferes with the subsequent task,” Professor Wang said.

“In real life when students are surfing online and exchanging information and right after that they go to take a test, they may perform worse.”

The researchers suggested social media platforms could be redesigned to help people understand the contents of messages rather than get caught up in the decision to share them or not.

Freedom of speech should have a limit, people use it and cross the limits

What an idiot. "Freedom of speech" with a limit is not actually "Freedom of speech". Obviously, I wouldn't condone anyone if he is supporting pedophilia or genocide. But mocking a head of state is definitely not crossing the freedom of speech. If you can't come in to terms with it, then hide in a cave and don't interact with the public.

To tell people who do not believe in the right of a comedian mocking a head of state "to go hide in a cave" is not an insult to them, but an upgrade, a step up to their everyday living condition. The sewer can be very humid sometime...

i am really sorry for this beautiful woman who was murdered by a subhuman creature called asylum seeker.. european union must deport these horrible creatures to their homeland immediately..

Evil woman got what she asked for. She tried to protect this Gambian criminal, fully knowing that he had raped a little kid in Germany. The cops were about to deport this animal, but Lauren Mann disrupted their plans and thwarted the deportation. I hope that more and more criminal illegals would murder these sort of extreme-left loonies.

946  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Hillary Clinton Trustworthy? on: April 30, 2016, 01:43:38 PM
It is better to trust Hillary Clinton rather
than Donald Trump.

How did you came to that conclusion? Let me make the comparison between the two. Trump would say whatever he want to say. He is not much bothered about the public reaction to it. And he never lies. On the other hand, Hitlery is a habitual liar. She is a hypocrite, who would modify her speech depending on the audience. In front of a liberal audience she will act like a liberal. And in front of conservatives, she would act as if she is one of them.

Bernie had one good poison pill against her: http://usuncut.com/politics/goldman-sachs-transcripts-clinton/

Trump leading the race, shows 40 percent of blacks are lining up behind Trump

40% of the African Americans supporting Donald Trump? That is pure rubbish. You can claim that "40% of the African American GOP members" support Trump. But less than 4% of the African Americans are GOP voters. So his overall support among the blacks will be less than 4%.

Last time, Obama received more than 96% of the African American vote. This time it will remain as the same, as per the ground reports (in case of a Hitlery vs Trump fight.

This time do you believe 96% will go vote for clinton?

....
I understand that some of this data may been tweaked...
It's important to understand that the ground based thermometer database is AMENDABLE TO TWEAKING.  Period.

OK, without any ad hominem attacks (which this thread seems to be descending into), can someone explain simply what's wrong with this data:
....
Specifically, the claim that the GMST in 2015 was the warmest since 1880, and that "15 of the 16 warmest years on record occurred since 2001".
....
If the data is invalid, I would appreciate a clear and concise explanation as to why this is the case. ....

Ground temperature data is okay for regional climate issue, but not global.  By it's nature, "ground temperature data" attempts to combine multiphase physical systems into an aggregate of "temperature."  To see the problem with this, consider trying to take the temperature above an ice cube, or six inches above a pan of boiling water.    These systems are not in thermal equilibrium.

A temperature reading from a polar orbiting satellite measures aspects of gas ONLY, say at 10k feet.  It is thus a measure of a system which is in thermal equilibrium and which thus is credible.

The ground temperature network is inappropriate and actually ridiculous for attempting to derive a "global temperature."   The fact that in the US, an obscure sub agency of NASA uses NOAA data to produce propaganda on "Latest record shattering Temperature <<blah blah blah>>" is irrelevant.

A reasonable way to deal with this would be to consider as credible, the satellite data, and not as credible, the ground based thermometer networks, for matters concerning "climate change."  This will eventually come to pass, but for some years expect to see the bureaucracies built on top of the thermometer networks to continue to shout.

Too bad you weren't my science teacher....

Loretta Lynch: No Deadline For Clinton Email Probe

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said there’s no deadline for concluding the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server, and said setting a deadline would only make the probe less thorough.

“People have to have confidence that we treat every case the same, no matter who’s last name is involved, no matter how much publicity it gets,” Lynch said in an interview on PBS’ “Charlie Rose.”

I'm not sure that Bernie was a complete failure.  He won a lot of states and didn't take any big donations.  He was up against the Clinton machine which was an uphill climb.  I also think that his supporters are paving the way for the next election.  Not for Bernie, but for the next non-establishment candidate on the democratic side (Warren maybe?).

That does not exist.

Warren especially.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2016/03/17/elizabeth_warren_refuses_to_call_on_hillary_to_release_wall_street_transcripts_its_a_yes_or_no_question.html

The failure of bernie was his will not to fight harpy clinton, not to refuse the help from moveon.org, the absolute clinton machine. He swallowed the poison pill. In reality it was a show: clinton was already chosen by the DNC.

The same happened on the GOP side as you may know. Bush was the chosen one.
