161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Texas Bitcoin Conference + 1 million dollar Hackathon + Bitcoin Concert on: February 27, 2014, 11:31:37 PM
I'm really looking forward to this. It seems like the Texas Bitcoin Conference will be at least as big as the Vegas and San Jose events!

165  Economy / Goods / Re: Would you be interested in... High Altitude Ballooning Kits? on: February 23, 2014, 08:28:49 PM
Very cool toys Smiley
How do you recover the camera, is there a gps module? How can you be sure that the balloon won't drop in the sea or in a river?

Yes, it has a GPS module that sends data over RTTY each 30 secs, so you can track the balloon on a map. By using a software that analyses all the world wind data you can predict the landing spot, in fact the prediction I did before launching was nearly perfect. Also, it is advisable to launch on a non-windy day and far from sea.

I was wondering the same thing. Too bad I can't try this where I live - there's a very good chance it may land somewhere on one of the four military bases here.  Shocked
166  Economy / Collectibles / Re: New MicroSoul coins for the masses 0.01 on: February 23, 2014, 04:26:12 PM
Dear Gravitate,

The idea of a physical coin is attractive, but how can we know that you cannot spend the bitcoins that you put on the physical coins that you sell us?  You are the original creator/owner of the original private key(s) that you engrave on the physical coins, so it is conceivable that you could store those keys will and later spend those bitcoins yourself (assuming not spent yet, but most will buy these to save and not spend the btc).

quote from buyphysicalbitcoins site:
"I also have covered the coded private key with a security sticker that states the Bitcoin address and your unique Physical Bitcoin Number which will be added to the register of all coins sold.  I work alone and once the code is engraved on the Physical Bitcoin is deleted. The only details I keep about the coin are the bitcoin address and the simple equation of how to read the private key on the back (this is in case you forget)."

Thank you,

Daddyhutch

This is an issue with any physical bitcoin. You can't prove a negative (i.e. no one can prove he doesn't keep the private key), as even Mike Caldwell admits:
Quote
Q. It's impossible to prove you didn't keep the private keys, and with all the Bitcoin scams lately, why should I believe you?
A.  I have given out my real-world identity and have digitally signed a list of the Bitcoin addresses used in this project.  I have made it so that it if I were to perpetrate a scam, it would be possible to prove it and to hold me legally accountable - something no scammer wants to do.  You should demand the same from anyone handling your cryptocurrency.
167  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 10 Reasons your business should accept bitcoins on: February 14, 2014, 07:05:09 PM
You didn't mention the fact that bitcoin eliminates chargeback risk. That should have been at least number 2 on your list.
168  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Bitcoin Specie Project sponsored by the makers of New Liberty Dollar on: February 10, 2014, 06:50:31 PM
That would allow us to do much more than we are already to take bitcoin to places where the internet doesn't reach.

By "us" do you mean the bitcoin community in general or New Liberty Dollar?

Just wondering if you have ideas/plans for helping bitcoin work offline.

By us, I am referring to the folks working on the Bitcoin Specie Project, many are not affiliated with NLD.

For bitcoin working offline, the specie pieces are the first effort.
The specie pieces are essentially offline value tokens for bitcoin, that also do not take any bitcoin out of the blockchain transactions (so no risk of lost bitcoin).  In the endgame, when bitcoin has a more stable value, is accepted most anywhere at point of sale (not just online), and there are vastly more transactions needing processing, using specie for small transactions will make a lot of sense.  No delay for confirmations, no miner fee, no blockchain transaction record, complete fungability, as well as solving many of the other criticisms common to bitcoin's critics.
We suspect that there will be others doing something similar, and are happy to assist those that would like to try.  Competition is good, and as mentioned, this is not a way to get rich.  Making money on creating circulation pieces doesn't make sense to us, anything we would make on those would debase them of their circulating value.
The collector pieces we DO sell at a profit, and that pays for a fraction of the expenses, so we keep costs low and mostly are volunteering the time and effort.

We do have other plans to extend this, including paper wallet and/or warehouse receipt using highly secure printing methods for anti-counterfeiting.  We have some expertise in this as well and would be happy to contribute when there is sufficient demand to support such an issuance.

Very interesting. If you plan on attending the upcoming conference in Austin, it would be great to meet up again and discuss this.

I just received my order, BTW, and they look great!

170  Economy / Goods / Re: Selling empty water bottles on: February 08, 2014, 02:44:06 PM
Just received my first few empty bottles, they are hashing around 1kh each. nice trade on this!

No problem, hope you enjoy your purchase. Thanks for being a great customer.

So the first batch has shipped? How do we know this isn't a sockpuppet?

Please post some pics of the bottles and proof that they are performing according to spec.

Wow... Can we just avoid this kind of troll/joke sale post? It's just a waste of time for everyone, thanks.

Obviously a case of early adopter envy.
172  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Understanding the Blockchain on: February 07, 2014, 01:49:49 AM
Hi all,

New to BTC and trying to learn fast. Whilst studying the live blockchain transactions on Blockchain.info, I noticed 1 address with a significant number of newly generated coins.

https://blockchain.info/address/1Baf75Ferj6A7AoN565gCQj9kGWbDMHfN9 for example has at least 10 awards of 25 BTC each since the beggining of February alone - i.e. at prevailing rates the best part of a quarter of a million dollars worth of newly generated coins in just a few days.

Am I to understand that this will be an address for one of the larger Bitcoin mining pools? I presume that all the newly generated coins are awarded to the main pool address, and then shared out amongst the miners?

I must admit I am surprised that even a large pool manages to be awarded so many new coins - seemingly around 3 batches per day.

Just trying to get my head around it all Smiley

Thanks
Alasala

Blocks in general are solved at a rate of about once every ten minutes.
173  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Auction platform for goods based on bitcoins on: February 03, 2014, 02:56:54 PM
@coinrevo: Your question made me think about a new domain name and here it is: http://freeZ1.com

@rdnkjdi: The community has the chance to beat these giants. In a couple of days I will post tasks to be done on http://freeZ1.com to become the number one platform. Stay tuned!

@countryfree: The service will be free both for sellers and buyers (fair use). Donations will be welcome.

Are donations the only way you plan to earn profits?

You could tack on a minimal fee (0.001 BTC or less) for each purchase and offer additional services, like advertising your item/auction on the site.

I also got the following:
Quote
My name is Renee and I run a non-profit in in Vancouver, Canada called PeaceGeeks. We have actually been accepting BitCoin donations for about a year, but we were wondering if we might still qualify for your contributions. I believe your goal is to spread awareness and the legitimacy of BitCoin as a means of contributing, so in this sense, adding another organization to your list would advance your cause while being a big help to us. Kindly advise when you have a moment! All the best for now!

They are not qualified, since they have been receiving bitcoin for a while, but they were wondering if we could add their site to our list. They asked if they could at least get listed on our site as a list of charities that accept bitcoin, since apparently our list is used as a source of places to donate to. I think we can accommodate them. Edd, can you add peacegeeks.org as a charity, with a note reading "disqualified: already accepting" to our site? When I have time, I'll have to go through the list and fix up the status messages a bit, since many of the charities on our list don't accept btc, and apparently don't plan to.

Will do, Rasah.

I've been thinking about starting a blog/CMS site listing all bitcoin accepting charities that I know of, whether or not they meet Bitcoin100 prerequisites for a donation from us, so that like-minded bitcoin donators can find them.
175  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Open database of 300+ Crypto-Currency startups on: January 16, 2014, 03:45:39 PM
Very nice. Some more history and links may be educational.

I can help in my spare time (admittedly, not much).
Okay, sure what kind of links and what kind of history? Smiley
Thank you very much, together we can make this a great source of data!
//DeaDTerra

Links to the startups maybe, so viewers can click them directly:)

Yes, links to the startups themselves would be nice.

By history, I mean launch date, first mention in an article or post, information on founders, date of closure, that sort of thing.

Some more information about who you are and how you plan to bring buyers and sellers together would be appreciated.
