It's been a tussle, but it seems that ever since xrp got to that second position again, it has been maintaining it. The only difference I see now is that, the gap between the two is not that much, which then makes it possible for ETH to be take over take over the position again.

IMHO, considering its potentials and capability, ethereum so far is still underachieved. But it is very very possible that pretty soon it would make it into the biggest two.

I think the ico scam here and there is one major factor that is affecting etheruem. Soon when market returns with its usual moves, etheruem will get back to number two spot. And will even do better when the scam reduces. Crypto enthusiasts have to look for measures to discourage ICO scam. Especially by helping newbies who are eager to run into buying shit coins are joining a scamming bounty.

I have no doubts that Ethereum will get the second place back as soon as the devs will release Ethereum 2.0 update, that should happen within three upcoming weeks so lets support Ethereum and make Ripple leave the second spot.
