I don’t think they need to invent a penalty system for eye pokes. They just need to change the gloves that fighters wear. There are plenty of other combat leagues that use gloves that curve the fingers and keep them from being extended for eye pokes. I’m not sure why the UFC doesn’t use them, but they should.

Haven't they tried that though? If I'm not mistaken, I think the UFC briefly introduced such gloves but went back to the old ones. Either because they didn't prevent the pokes, or for some other reason (fighters didn't like them?).

Eye poking is not much different than other fouls, with the exception that it's harder to prove intention, and sometimes a "victim" moves their head towards the opponent's extended fingers, but I'm sure they could work out some sensible rule to at least try to prevent it.
There just has to be some sort of penalty, otherwise fighters will be doing that intentionally as a part of fighting strategy. I believe Jon Jones admitted doing that on purpose in some of his old interviews.

UFC have already spent millions on new gloves (they looked like golden) in 2024, but later abandoned them. One of the reason was KO/TKO drop rate. They were thinner. That made fighters throw less powerful punches to prevent hand injury. But, those new gloves had same form as old ones - fingers were still not covered. I dont think they would spend again money on gloves, but rather add new rules.

I believe it would be easier to change the rules and start punishing this type of behavior. That way, fighters will incorporate the closed fist into their training, and it will become a habit. Then, severe punishment and new rules should solve this, and I believe it would be much cheaper for the UFC.

Make them fight in mittens and problem will be solved Cheesy

tokeween, any juicy bets you have spotted for this weekend? I see you are talking about Dulgarian and Valle. Valle is almost 3.00 with 9-0 record and almost all finishes in first round. His opponent also  finishes opponents quick. Both guys are more lovers to hug-throw-and-control than striker Cheesy On the paper they low almost equal, so the guy with weird and lucky punch will win, or first one to run out of tank.

I thought they were of similar thickness but stitched in a way that forced fingers to go down and made it harder (if not impossible) to extend fingers. Anyhow, the concept didn't catch on and they're gone now.

I believe it would be easier to change the rules and start punishing this type of behavior. That way, fighters will incorporate the closed fist into their training, and it will become a habit. Then, severe punishment and new rules should solve this, and I believe it would be much cheaper for the UFC.

It could be something really simple, like a point deduction if you hold extended fingers close to opponent's face and if there's fingers-to-eye contact. The referee would need to have some sort of video replay assistance, but that shouldn't be a problem.
As many commentators pointed out, currently there are almost no consequences for eye poking, which actually incentivises it, especially in a close fight, where you can gain an edge over the other guy.

Here is the short video https://www.youtube.com/shorts/CotiS6N3MoQ. I cant find face to face picture comparison, but old gloves looked thicker.

Here is a good video (move to New vs Old part) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsRwCZ8Y5V4 explaining one of the reason for eye pokes.

If you dont have time to watch whole video, I will give a short sum-up. Eye pokes have little connection with form of gloves. Each glove have advantage, disadvantage and opportunity to straighten finger and poke. There are fighters who have competed in different promotions, wore different gloves and never eye poked their opponent.

No, didn't look as I'm more focused on crypto at the moment...  I just got an airdrop from Monad for around 200k MON tokens.  Not really sure how much is that post TGE, but prelaunch it could he around 10k USD.  Grin Grin  Not as big as the HL airdrop but still happy I got some.

I'd prolly go for Garcia for a small bet tho.  That's going to be my only bet for the event.

Weigh ins are gonna be live in three hours.  Let's see how these guys look.

Many are talking about Garcia, but looking at the statistics and some fight data, I think Onama might be slightly superior. Of course, this is just my opinion before the fight, because Garcia can really land one blow and end everything, so it will depend on their pace.

Yeah, it's close tbh...  But before Garcia's match up against Kattar, I'd say Onama has the edge.  But after seeing that fight go as it happened, I'd lean towards Garcia in this spot.

Overall this is gonna be a goooood fight.  Can't wait!  Wink

Is this eye poke is deep enough to stop the fight? Not even a point was deducted Cheesy And even after that eye poke, Werdum still won the fight that went full distance. What about Bisping fighting with one eye only? Or Shara Bullet with his funny looking eye? Should we continue talking about Tom, eye poke, was he faking injury or it wasnt that bad? Or move on to next event? Because Toms team keeps posting that he still cant see with his eye, even though he was sitting with both eye open at the doctor, then doing something on his mobile and we did not see him even squinting a little. Some Toms fanboys post that Gane must be disqualified and released from UFC, because this is not first time he eye pokes his opponent.

The only eye poke I accept is this Cheesy https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vzEIzsirxaA
Oh my god, what a terrible eye poke, I feel so terrible after seeing this image, oh my god! Does he still have an eye? How did he escape to such a terrible eye poke? It's horrendous. Can you please share the moment when he gets eye poked? It's really miracle that he won the fight after that. MMA is a very nasty business. I would choose to be a footballer, basketball player, tennis player or any other sport every day. MMA doesn't pay much and is too dangerous if you have a very dirty opponent.

Google Fabricio Werdum vs Travis Browne (if you want to watch full fight, I can quickly find only eye poke compilation mostly). After such and eye poke, Werdum continue and won the fight. After eye poke fight was not even stopped for a long time. Ref only gave few minutes for Werdum to blink eyes, to check if everything is ok, small pause and they continued.

I have missed Garcia vs Onama event. Any good fights you can recommend to watch in reply? What about Dulgarian vs del Valle ? Valle was a huge underdog with almost 3.00 odds. And he won by submission in round 1. tokeweed, we have missed a nice bet Cheesy

Watched short event review - another eye poke in co-main event…

^  Would've lost if I made that bet on Dulgarian.  Lol.  The only bet I bet is a small one on Garcia.  I didn't expect it to finish in R1.  And from the looks of it, Garcia looked like a 1.50 favorite or better out there.

Anyway, here are the results.

Steve Garcia def. David Onama via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:34
Waldo Cortes-Acosta def. Ante Delija via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:59
Jeremiah Wells def. Themba Gorimbo via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Yadier del Valle def. Isaac Dulgarian via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 3:41
Charles Radtke def. Daniel Frunza via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 3, 4:29
Allan Nascimento def. Cody Durden via submission (anaconda choke) – Round 2, 3:13
Billy Elekana def. Kevin Christian via technical submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 3:33
Timmy Cuamba def. ChangHo Lee via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Donte Johnson def. Sedriques Dumas via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 2, 1:25
Norma Dumont def. Ketlen Vieira via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Alice Ardelean def. Montserrat Conejo via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
SeokHyeon Ko def. Phil Rowe via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
Talita Alencar def. Arianne Carnelossi via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 3, 4:36
