I'll add my own hypothetical scenario: a scammer is released from prison and scams another person. In fact, that's not only hypothetical, it's common practice. Nobody involved in releasing the scammer will be liable for his future scams.

The scammer still has a criminal record, and victims can protect themselves with that info.  The scammer should still have the flag here for the same reason.

Flags don't disappear, they just become inactive. Example:
This user has inactive flags, which may be totally inaccurate.
It's up to the reader how they value this.

I couldn't find this after looking at the first several pages of this thread...

Does the newbie flag ever expire? I am aware of a few that have not expired after 6 years.
Newbie flags are designed not expire at all. Trust flags that involve contractual violations (type 2 and Type 3) are the only ones that are designed to expire "in the spirit of forgiveness" as stated by the admin
Hmm, that is probably suboptimal.

Someone who has violated a contract has arguably actually scammed someone. While any risk associated with a newbie flag is purely theoretical.

Perhaps this is an oversight on the part of theymos.

Oh, I didn't know that expired/inactive flags still remained visible.   No worries then - the warning is still there.

I think the system is designed to encourage forgiveness.

That's noble, but forgiveness usually happens after the scammer stops scamming.  :/  We are proving right now six years is not long enough for some careers.

Oh, man, I'm sometimes surprised that you don't know some basic features of the forum.
Even you have four inactive flags: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=30747;page=iflags

I would agree with LoyceV that it is up to the readers to interpret the status of each flag

I used to know them... but I have to maintain memories I find trivial, or I forget them fast now.  (Plus, the date the thread was created I was probably still undergoing medication changs).   It's great for re-watching movies and truth is I'd rather retain the faces of friends over custom programming done on an old forum.  Smiley

Are the expired flags labelled as such, or all they all called inactive?

Well then forget I said anything, and 2-3 years if I ask again, just point me here.   Thanks LV.
