'The Man' aside, he broke laws available for any member of the public to read and be aware of. He knew what he was doing. I do not break laws and wouldn't expect a payout from strangers if I did.

I'm sure he'll enjoy a couple of years playing tennis and then be straight back in action. Ideally the space will have moved on by then and he'll be an irrelevance. The bad smells need to waft away.

Of course hes going to act like he didn't know he was doing anything wrong, but thats no excuse for breaking the law.

Also, I believe if you look at his profile on here he currently has scam accusations against him, that apparently he didn't plan on dealing with in a timely manner.

He knowingly took dirty money in exchange for bitcoins knowing the exchange was to "launder the money". He knew this was wrong and against the law. He knowingly broke the law and got caught. I don't feel the need to give money to someone just because they exhibit poor judgment.  And besides I heard the guy was loaded. He has a huge bitcoin stash.

Not to mention he has ripped off forum members for large amounts of btc.  He seemed to have a good rep until his trial/sentencing.  Just another bad person associated with btc.  Any good he previously did is now undone by scamming people on here.

You certainly should NOT be giving him money.  There are much worthier causes you can donate to.

Spot on but with a crypto currency that is unregulated (for the most part) and made to be very anonymous, it's trying to bring that cash concept into the online space.
Bitcoin will always have that stain of being associated with illicit activities because of these factors, as well as the high profile ones like Silk Road.

Charlie Shrem is one of the figures in the world of bitcoin that really did something for the community. He openly admitted to the crime--which was dealing with drug dealers in Silk Road-- and wholeheartedly accepted the consequences of his actions. Upon reading his blog and the CoinDesk article about him, my respect towards his personality increased by this line:

I'm going out on a limb here to state context - he's probably broke and now in jail and/or paying restitution fees.  He probably no longer had the nickels to rub together to pay the guy back - I wish he would come forward and admit this and offer to make payment arrangements in 2 years when he's to be released.  I mean 35 BTC is no small matter either, but cut the guy a break.

what? it's not like I swore at him or sending him hate emails.
one might disagree with me because he did some good things to the bitcoin community, too. but I still think that people have no reason to send him funds after what he done.
