I was/am only part of the project as someone who is helping out the community, I'm only good with public relations and gathering the needed information. I'll leave the unmoderated community discussion open for now, but if the people decide to leave I'll lock it (or if John decides so).

Disclaimer: This project is considered "beta" and is in an ever-changing state. This said, it moves rapidly and keeping up with the evolution is not easy. The best channel for up-to-date information is through the "offical" forums. Anything posted on BCT or elsewhere regarding changes to this project's current state should not be considered unless also confirmed through the "offical" forums.
Thank you for your support
This info is nice! VNL comunity knows that only constatnt with VNL is development and change and that said IMHO you should share few words about where you are going with VNL and what are the plans for the coin. Coin with best available development is great but means little in acceptance, adoption and usability. We know that VNL is not just another altcoin but its still one and as such it would be nice not just for the community but for possible investors to have some views from dev where he is going with the project other than just information regarding development. From some IRC discussions I got impression that you have all planed to smallest detail but than again who can tell that better than you Thank you for your commitment in development

Activity have been slowly increasing, i only have real time stats and they are showing more than 3K unique visitors per month, you have to take account that crawling bots for search engines are also part of the stats but the numbers look good to me so far Obviously most of the audience is here at bitcointalk We will also migrate to a server which will be faster and dedicated to the forum in the coming weeks

It could perform PoW mining if you compiled Miner++ with the android NDK however performance would be fairly low I'd imagine. Alternatively just install the Android app and let the coins stake and mine some PoS blocks in the background.

Tested the android wallets for weeks now. Works great, no problems at all! Exciting to hear the new developments. Will that be something for the mobile phones John? This coin is unique and no clone of any cryptocurrency! I find this sentence very appropriate for this innovative coin, but Vanillacoin, because its yummy? All the best to all of you!

Hey, Josh-Connor, did POW ever resume?
You can read an update here https://talk.vanillacoin.net/topic/143/temporary-proof-of-work-pause-at-block-117833/11Proof-of-Work will resume at block # 136000. All nodes will be required to upgrade "at the same time" because old node versions will no longer be able to connect.
I have placed an error macro in the source code to prevent accidental pre-mature upgrades. More news will follow as we get closer to block # 136000.
Thank you for your support.

You can but if the transaction is not already in the global transaction pool then the block will be rejected. In that regard you must first relay the transaction in order for it to be accepted into a block. Thank you for your support.

Can you point me to where in the source the block gets rejected if it is not found in the tx pool? I have tried myself locating it by following the block processing all the way from tcp_connection.cpp:2486 to block.cpp:2476, where the redundant pool contents are finally removed, but I must have missed the part where it occurs.

The zero confirmation branch is private, but basic integration into branch master is starting as can be seen in /database. It's not as simple as "reject a block that is not in the local transaction pool" because an initial download can never occur. Instead you reject blocks close in time to the transactions in your transaction pool if a mismatch is found. Also, in this way if for some reason a node doesn't have a transaction it will still accept the block just prior to the next block due to the timing I've described. This can occur if your node came online and is not fully synchronized with the global transaction pool when it receives a block. Thank you for your support.

On a conceptual level this is a very promising approach. If it works, it's not impossible that it could become a new standard that replaces the old Bitcoin-based infrastructure in cryptocoins. Also, in this way if for some reason a node doesn't have a transaction it will still accept the block just prior to the next block due to the timing I've described. This can occur if your node came online and is not fully synchronized with the global transaction pool when it receives a block. I'm not sure if I grasped that. Does a node accept a block with a transaction that it does not know about? Also, Vanilla has a Peercoin-style checkpointing. Will that become superfluous once the 0-confirmation goes live?

Revisions of the ZeroTime draft and several unpublished but related drafts will answer these questions in time. Regarding the Peercoin-style checkpointing, it was implemented for backwards compatibility only, this code will be removed in it's entirety in subsequent releases since it is not needed. Thank you for your support.

I would like to query my VNL account for the latest balance to get information in my own application. Is there an API I can query? It seems that VNL is not available at https://chainz.cryptoid.info/ (the API I am using for my other coins). NM: just found it https://blockchain.vanillacoin.net/info

I think the problem was just miscommunication between ocminer and jimlite and then jimlite and john-connor. Also, saymissme doesn't speak english extremely well, which was also part of the problem. I think the jpeg he posted is probably accurate.

Those miners got full reward for their shares but never produced income - so they stole from the other miners who were legit and produced rewards. Simple example: You mine with a normal client at 100 MH/s and someone else with a "modified" client who is faking the hashrate of 100 MH/s .. You are finding the blocks, the other person never finds a block. You get paid for 100 MH/s and the other one gets paid for 100 MH/s even though he never produces income, so he gets 50% "for free" while you are doing his job too. Whats so hard to believe/understand here ? There is even a .jpg from saymissme up there with blocks/hashrate etc. listed ...

I'm not saying that you said anything incorrect, just that jimlite misunderstood, and then jimlite conveyed that to john. Miscommunication doesn't mean you were wrong. Interpretations can be incorrect. Right. I said I think the jpeg is accurate. edit: Actually, I'll change my reasoning. The problem was just that saymissme doesn't speak english very well.

Can you prove, that idcray was stealing me? Yes, it's simple. Just compare youraccount/earnings against statistics/blockfinder. And if you found more than 2x vnl/blocks than your earnings are... You can be sure, you've been robbed! I say 2x, only because I'm mining on suprnova and I've found 15 blocks - 1185 Vnl, but my earnings are only 723.12335223 Vnl since restart of pow. This is because minimal diff is 1, so I didn't find any shares in fast blocks with my 350MHs/s. Or somebody is stealing hash on suprnova too!?

I think the problem was just miscommunication between ocminer and jimlite and then jimlite and john-connor. Also, saymissme doesn't speak english extremely well, which was also part of the problem. I think the jpeg he posted is probably accurate. I just read this part of the thread and here is my honest thoughts on the matter: I have no way of knowing whether shares were stolen by "Russian Hackers", saymissme, or by members of idcray pool, but someone was exploiting idcray. When I asked saymissme about this and where the 800GH went, he said "I banned those bitches, they stole 10,000 coins" I asked if he was going to compensate the miners for their missing shares/coins. At first he said yes, and then 2 minutes later he said, "No, get it from the scammers, F You." Now I don't think a lot was scammed, maybe 5 or 10%, but over a few months that can add up. Then we found out he set up a second hidden vnl pool for about 7 of his big hashers. So either he wanted to protect the big hashers from the "Russian hackers", or he knew about it or was in on it and made the 2nd pool for his friends (who may or may not have been exploiting original pool). And if he said they stole 10,000 coins, it was probably more, but regardless of what parts of the above went on, any ethical pool operator would have used their 1% fees to pay back as much as they could in good faith. They also would NOT set up a second hidden VNL pool to protect only their friends regardless of if these friends were innocent or the attackers. Also in the very beginning John caught idcray getting around a submission rule that he had to call them out on and demand they submit properly or he would ban the pool. So this is the second offense and while I agree that the language barrier is a problem to knowing the full truth, there were shannanigans or something shady going on and saymissme was getting caught in his own lies, being rude about it, and not wanting to help out all the normal miners other than his few big farm friends. Hope that sums it up. I don't know enough about him, but I do know that I supported both pools from the start and had one rig at each (I can't compare the hash or coins because I also rented) and I feel that what he said, what he did about the situation, and what he failed to do about the situation all leaves me in doubt of his character and not wanting to mine there anymore.

Well said jimlite, I have also been stung by this bull$h!t.
While I know it's not gonna get us our coins that should be paid to us it is also important that he doesn't get off scot free and that people are made aware before deciding to mine at idcray.
I do hope this matter can be resolved and miners that were unfairly treated recompensed, I spent good money mining at nicehash but I don't think saymissme will even try unfortunately.

Will fpga be the final advancement in vanilla mining?
If it succeeds, ASIC is the end game. ASICs are not planned though. VNL marketcap would have to be in the hundreds of millions in less than 2 years for a third party to manufacture ASICs for VNL.

No offense, but I don't believe that you know what you're talking about. Producing many ASICs cheaply would require a very large investment. Also, this coin isn't really secured by mining. It's secured by POS. Mining is for distribution. Now, if we reached a $50 million market cap in 6 months and the price is stable with known names entering, that might be good enough. The third party would probably need preorders though as most companies don't spend millions of dollars and hope they got it right when demand is unknown.

Could you point me where to find that info? Basically, John says it has to do with the synchronization of the global transaction pool and no one mining pool being able to mine more than 33% of the blocks. Here's the post from John I'm summing up: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=977245.msg11580830#msg11580830Remember, VNL is the only coin other than BTC that only requires 1 confirmation on Poloniex. I posted the link where you can confirm this numerous times. Eh... guess I'll do it again: Go here: https://poloniex.com/public?command=returnCurrencies -- Search for minConf":1," -- you get 2 results

There was a customer who ordered the complete stock.

What is the plan to allow for other FPGA mfr's?

I've heard xCore is toying with his Cairnsmore1 and it's hashing. If I had any other boards I would do the HDL for them but I cannot find any Lancelot or Icarus that are for sale. Thank you for your support.

The wallet will stake, just give it some time. if you want to fix the firewall issue, in the roaming/vanillacoin folder open config.dat. in there will be a port listed, forward that in your router for both tcp and udp

Edit: after few minutes { "walletaddress": xxx, "collateralrequired": 9999, "collateralbalance": 0, "networkstatus": open, "votecandidate": false, "votescore": 23633 } Might need to check for open ports, mate.

Android is a "client node" so it doesn't help the network by routing and relaying data. Thank you for your support.

how to build the wallet on linux without compiling boost, db and openssl? if I already have those libs in the system, why build them again? (boost is pretty slow to compile, took more that 10 hours on my nas)

VNL doesn't use shared libraries for security reasons (they can be replaced or infected). You must static link all dependencies. Here is a one shot script that you can fire and walk away from: https://github.com/xCoreDev/vanillacoin-scripts Thank you for your support.

Following your reasons, I should statically link every library into every wallet or application that can deal with sensitive data, including browsers, terminals, etc. I will end up with tens of occurrencies of every library. Furthermore, you are recompiling only three libraries, not all of them. You are gonna use libc, aren't you? Can't it be infected as well? Finally, recompiling is different than statically linking. I can have the static libraries without recompiling, and they are checksum checked when installed.

Cryptographic currencies should not use shared cryptographic libraries, period. libc is not a cryptographic library however boost does contain cryptographic functions that are used. The Bitcoin developers experienced a fork because they allowed the use of shared cryptographic libraries which were replaced during a system upgrade. Ultimately this was caused by gmaxwell's signature bug but brought to light by the upgraded library causing the network to fork. This same bug is what caused the Bitcoin network to recently split into two parts due to a faulty upgrade losing people 100's of thousands of dollars. Ultimately the system security is up to you, so I will leave it at that. Thank you for your support.

You'll need to release a new wallet every time there is a cert on any of those static libraries and find a way to force everyone to upgrade. And for Linux force rebuild of the libraries. It's a nightmare!

We need to tout the benefit of zerotime. Any merchant would be delighted to have 0.001% electronic transaction fee. A whole "industry" of arbitrage trading between exchanges would be created around instant transactions. is zerotime real or not?

A solid start would be to court gyft or egifter to accept VNL. Those are direct ways to spend cryptocurrencies in exchange for physical goods. (Well, sorta)
There was a time a few moons ago when I had a lot of BTC and needed to fiat/goods to support a family. I used coinbase to sell my BTC. They transferred it to my bank, but would only do $3kUSD/per week. I found gyft to be great, because I could buy gift cards to countless retailers, among those, amazon. WTF, I can get damn near anything I want from there, and I'd probably buy it from there anyhow. Anyhow, I just wanted to illustrate a path that VNL could take. VNL->ZeroTime->retail

John connor is true that you aren't focusing into marketing because maybe you and more people wants to get as much VNL as possible at this current prices because to be honest, super peers rewards, zerotime, and dark++ coming... marketing could be made by itself. Nice work John. Thanks for the preferences passphrase change request completed. I'm going to be running 0.3.9 super peer on a 10 year old 1GB ram laptop with windows 7 32 bit. I will report if I find any issues and feel free to ask if you need something, since not many people will be running win 7 32 bit or with only 1GB ram.

They aren't selling necessarily, for instance nobody is selling VNL except a bot and perhaps a few people that have no idea why the price is down (illusion). The USD price of VNL is relatively the same between 3 and 4 cents as it has been for months. Thank you for your support.

hope update comes fast, price is going through the floor, not sure why... was looking very promising just a few months ago... The price has not moved much, it's just an illusion because BTC is moon for no reason. USD price still between 3 and 4 cents as it's been for months. There is a complete lack of VNL sells(I see accumulation) except for a bot and one or two people. Go look at the charts. Thank you for your support.

depends on if you compare to usd or btc. then you could compare to eur or anything else. we usually compare to btc, and in this case most alts are going down, but it's correct to avoid it for now, because of the sudden rise.

R9 280/290 seem to work the best with the wolf miner. But John alluded to possibly changing algos later so 750ti may be just as good long term.

Someone has mentioned about changing the minning algo. Is it true?
Because IMO the best way, would be possibility of minning only by GPU.

ok, so why you deleted this post: "With such behavior you won't build big community. Idon't want to wite anything more, because it'd a waste of time. I start to regret, that I've invested in VNL for longer, not because of current price (it's a great opportunity to buy more), but because of you arrogant, disrespectful behavior.
NOT EVERYBODY ARE TROLLS, WHO THINK DIFFERENTLY, THAN YOU"
It's my thoughts as a holder/investor of VNL.
I have not asked you for your opinion, not have I seen anybody asking for it. You are not very empthatic, aren't you? Simply think of an ever growing community, writing down their personal wisdom, without beeing asked by anybody. This way it simply does not work. Let John and Devs have their condensed discussion they can refer to, that they not become lost in spam.

WTF dude. I didn't share my opinion with you. It was second time, when I asked JC personally (first one at vanilla forum) and haven't got an answer.
You expect an answer from him? You shouldn't, nobody need to expect any answer from anybody. Next time use PM for your "personally" questions. Johns explanations for a separate forum/thread are totally clear. The other thread is indeed full of shitloads of price predictions, making the thread nearly unreadable. For me as a new interested person a waste of time. I will not make my investment decisions from this, but it's annoying.

I've asked JC questions on his forums and never got a reply. Some of us don't get bend-out-of-shape over it. The dev doesn't owe us anything and we should not expect it. JC is building a revolutionary innovative crypto-currency and pushing updates like a mad man. Just stay humble and let the man do his thing. The last thing he needs is the vocal minority (of the community) pestering him about his personality. Chill out.

It's so quiet here because you can get all up-to-date information from twitter/github and official forums. Also some people might be still frustrated after unofficial thread got closed. John is against pump/dump price troll talks, so... 90%+ of discussion just vanished.

I was mining when this coin started but it is not an good coin anymore for me. Fanboys are attacking ppl for anything. People dont get answeres to their questions. This thread is selfmoderated but still ppl don get answeres to their questions. No coin is better than the weakest link. A coin is good if many are using it. You can make the best code but it dont matter if ppl get scared away from it. I know that you like to code and people are distractions. This coin is going nowhere if it ends up just to be used by a small group that only cares about the price and not the technology behind it.

afaik it is strongly dis-recommended to run the same wallet on 2 devices, because some drift is inevitable

Make sure you perform a -rescan and repairwallet to make sure your balances are true and you are on the right block.

Encouraging start to the year for BTC. Anyone noticing what's going on, on Bittrex? The book is looking scrappy-as. Obviously the work of a single trader. The sell side has really thinned out up to 10k making the price suppression look like a joke. Look at the complete order book it has not changed for months, only some scrap battles at the bid/ask.
My point being that it's still an opportunity to load up down here but not a lot of time left imo, the supressor is running out of juice (not forgetting another could take over and try the same thing. I still ponder though, who wastes their life doing these kinds of things when you would probably make more money scrubbing toilets at a food hall). GL to everyone for '16! Let's make some big things happen - not just for the coin but the solid community being developed as well.
Can't descript situation right now as this good... Brace yourself for cheap coin

From some IRC discussions I got impression that you have all planed to smallest detail but than again who can tell that better than you Thank you for your commitment in development ^ya devs doing stuff like update wallets yummy *XVC @6OOO ===> will still choo choo too da moon weeeee https://poloniex.com/exchange#btc_xvc
