Well, because bitcoin is a thing that earlier than litecoin and its media coverage is greater than litecoin. At least my family which don't involved in bitcoin know about bitcoin in news, while litecoin isn't even mentioned in news... Also SHA-256 hashing is easier than scrypt hashing, so it is more popular...

More appropriate block times. Bitcoin has a 10 minute target block time verses litecoin's 2.5 minute target block time. This results in much fewer orphaned blocks which makes mining (read: securing the network) a much more predictable endeavor and profitability can be more easily predicted.
Other then that they are very similar, and from a technical point of view they are close to exactly the same with the exception of Bitcoin using SHA-256 verses litecoin's script. However with the advent of scrypt's ASICs being manufactured there is little effective difference between the two from a high level point of view.
Litecoin is actually a fork of Bitcoin

i want to add the important thing that whenever you think of cryptocurrency you thick about bitcoin sinceit was the first one and the most popular one. litecoin is considered and alternative. bitcoin has dedicated developers. bitcoin has more usage than litecoin. ...
now i ask you why do you ask this question? do you think the opposite is true?

Bitcoin has an active group of core developers and active community; from what I gather, this is less and less the case with Litecoin. It seems its community and developers are moving on to other projects. That's a big reason right there.
It's too much like its parent--Bitcoin--to really differentiate itself in any real meaningful way. It's like the second wave of early adopters wanted to have its own moment of a first-mover advantage.

Bitcoin is supported by a larger group of people. The more people working on the project and running nodes makes it a strong decentralized system. Also litecoin doesn't have any real-world adoption. It's been hard enough to get people to accept bitcoin, litecoin would have a lot of catching up to do.

I used to have most of my crypto net wealth in the form of Litecoins in 2012 and 2013. But then, the number of websites which accepted Litecoins declined, as many of the prominent websites closed down (Atlantis was a very good market site which accepted LTC, and there were a few more sites). And after I lost quite a lot of coins when LTC-Global closed down, I decided against keeping my wealth in Litecoins.

That is kind of like asking how is Apple better than iPhone, or how is Nike better than Jordans. Litecoin was built off Bitcoin.

the real question is how litecoin is better than bitcoin, not the opposite, remember that Bitcoin is not an altcoin, and all the others are pure clone
but i could go ahead and say
supply limit too high
scrypt algo need heavy memory, it is more expensive to build asic for it, so it could lead to centralization, if only few company can afford it
more orphaned block because of the faster confirmation and so on

bitcoin is the prototype of crypto currency, and litecoin is just a copycat, there were so many copycats, and ltc is the best copycats, or nobody remembers it, actually I think dogecoin is better than litecoin although DOGE is copycat too cos faster block time, so btc is best. 10 minutes block time is slow, but it is the first crypto coin.

More liquidity. During this pump the price of ltc is fluctuating by 10% daily. You can move the market with only a couple hundred grand. Those days are over for bitcoin.

The usage of bitcoin is more mainstream than litecoin. And the first thing that people asking 'Do you know bitcoin?' People never ask 'Do you know
litecoin?' That is the different between them, bitcoin word is more popular to the ear of people rather than litecoin that will make bitcoin better than
litecoin

Litecoin should be Embraced by all Bitcoiners to some degree, imagine the unthinkable if Bitcoin took some bizarre development direction that wasn't in its best interest in the future and there was no place else to turn except fiat. ![Roll Eyes](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif) I've always seen Bitcoin being the big brother of litecoin I think it should look after it a bit more rather than picking on it. We don't want the top spot we want a successful btc. ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif)

Well? Let's hear it.
in my view Litecoin has value because it is the second biggest blockchain and it is also a backup for bitcoin. you can also try some new stuff with Litecoin which would be too risky for bitcoin for example. in the end both are like brothers (Litecoin is the little one) . so i would keep some Litecoin just in case ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Bitcoin gold Litecoin silver

How is it better? Easy, network effect.
Literally almost every altcoin out there is technically superior to Bitcoin but that is immaterial. Any cryptocurrencie's value stems from it being used and the confidence in it, and nothing comes close to Bitcoin.

If you want my opinion which you may totally disagree with , the Original idea was Bitcoin basically and Bitcoin is a Open-source code project , so basically everyone is copying it's not just Litecoin , it's about all the other Cryptoo currencies , they are all cheap low copies and Bitcoin is Core , it's that simple to me .

Litecoin is just a largely useless alt and people only have it as it's seen as somewhat of a second best to bitcoin. Bitcoin is better and far superior because it just has adoption behind it (both by users and merchants). I mean, what can I actually buy with bitcoin? And yiou rarely see stores announcing that they're now accepting Litcoin, it's always bitcoin.
