It may be possible to keep ahead of the ROI curve if you resell the miner for maybe %40-50 of its original price and buy the newest model when it's released.
How often does bitmain release a new s-series? and how much does the resale value drop of the previous generation drop?

There is no stable timeline. Last year they were releasing new miners every 2-3 months. This year the S7 is the first true new miner, so that's 9 months since last release (S5+ doesn't really count). Pricing is also all over the place. Depends mostly on difficulty, exchange rate etc, i.e. the same things that affect your profitability.

Likely they will have competition from other companies before 9 months.  And the other companies likely will have  lower NM, even more efficient miner.

But when?  We don't know.  

well, then if a better and more efficient miner comes along that offer the best bang for my  buck, I can just sell my older one and use that money to purchase newer model. So I will probably be paying 50-70% purchase price of the newer model .

This is true in a lot of cases.  But cannot guarantee it, just lots of variables.

Also if difficulty keeps going up quick this might not be true on some.

Phone right up to the miner: 100dB
Phone 1 meter from the miner: 70dB

thanks...100db, wow, but i hope that it is a glitch as even 80dB can cause permanent hearing damage if you are exposed for more than 8hr.
70db sounds a bit more than S5 at 1m, maybe somewhat similar. S5 was ~72dB close to the fan. I am thinking about some low tech solutions to the noise.

The S5+ came with the same instruction regarding you must populate all 3. I thought someone already proved it could be ran with 2 of 3? Tupu?

Although my opinion is to still use all 3 which is how "my friend" runs his S5+. Why ask for trouble when it is so inexpensive to run this way. Cables are cheap unless you are building a mega farm.

Sure do! I plugged it in quickly this morning and the unit evened out between 1190W and 1210W. That's the power going into the LEPA, so I suspect the actual miner is only taking about 90-92% of that, so about 1090W or so.

Can you confirm that the controller has 9 18-pin jacks, the same as the S5+? There are a number of us interested in trying to control multiple S7s from a single S7 controller.

I assume that it's the same controller, given the pictures from Bitmain. But it would be nice to have actual confirmation from someone with an S7 in hand.

Also, how long are the controller ribbon cables? Any chance that they would reach to an adjacent S7 next to a center unit?

As for the ribbon cables, they look fairly short. I don't think you'd be able to reach an adjacent S7 with the included cables. But I'm sure some longer ribbon cables would be able to reach the controller from a foot or two away.

How is your power setup for the G1600 on the S7 each blade on its own 12v rail ? (For others reading this the lepa has 6 12v rails which makes this a little tricky set up)

I mentioned my power configuration before:

I'm using the GPU/CPU/RAM rails on the LEPA to power the unit. I have four PCI-e connections on rail 12V5 (three connectors powering hashing boards and one powering the controller) and two connections on each of 12V3,12V4 and 12V6. So in total there are 10 PCI-e connectors on the miner and that's how I split them up.

I took a video of the unit as well, just going to render it and upload it now. Should be up in less than an hour! (Slow internet ftw!)

2 could provide the power if it was proper cabling.   BUT bitmain would consider it improper powering or something like that.   Which means it would void warranty.

I'm sure some will use 2 and get away with it.  But it is possible if you used 2 it would show if there was a failure (depending on failure).  Just use 3 is the best anwser.

If you're thinking about me, then the answer is no.
I have 3 x APW3-12-1600-B2   and 10 x EVGA G2 1300W so I do not have a need for it.

But I believe that S5+ is working well with 2x PCI-E cables on single board.

Phone right up to the miner: 100dB
Phone 1 meter from the miner: 70dB

In the dead of winter I have done 690 usd for a power bill running 22 gpu's and 11 pc's

Kind of not a hobby at that point.

Now have I made a lot of money since 2012 no.  Maybe 7k in 3 years and 3 months .

So it is a business but not too big in my case.

Damn, sounds like power is pretty cheap wherever you live.. it's not unusual for my power bill to peak at $300 CAD once and awhile when I'm running just a couple of ASICs. However, that's probably because of how my power company does estimated readings, and then actual readings every few months.

NFLD has extremely cheap power  ( http://www.hydrogra.ca/rates-among-lowest.html )  ...even when compared to even Sk and MB.

Great North Data ( greatnorthdata.com) runs a hosting site there. Got a quote:  $60/KW... and i think that's CAD. So about $45 USD.  I might use them after i tumble some numbers. However, the whole difficulty thing has me a bit scared like most people are saying on here.
