Avalon 6? Any owners out there?

Also, I cant remember avalon6 thread I read this in, someone was requesting if someone would be able to turn off "smartspeed" and ssh login would probably be required. I offer up my services if whoever asked for that sees this post =)
I dont have an avalon6 but if ur willing to let me login remotely over ssh to one, I could figure out how things work =)

If your wanting to play with the firmware all you need is likely a RPI B or B+ .  You can flash it with the image from BlockC I put in my review - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1257327.0 .

But that should be all you need to ply round with firmware.  Will not be as fun with no miner on other side but should still allow you to modify it.

Yeah but w/o a miner, there is no testing or confirming.... its kinda pointless ...

what are you guys paying for these units ?  I'm tempted to buy 2-3 from Zoomhash to help warm my house 

if you can get near 4GH on 1200 watts thats pretty nice.   I like the workmanship and 4 PCI settup far better than the s7

I bought one from Zoom but I think they increased their prices. I paid $1500 including shipping.

Edit: they added a Raspberry Pi option, otherwise the price seems to be the same $1450 + shipping.

You might wan to consider placing the miner on one "side" or the other, to expose the "warmest side" to more air circulation. You might also want to just invert it so that the "warm bottom" becomes the "top".

Yeah, I noticed the same thing and ask BlockC about it - they said it's because of how the boards and heat sink are arranged inside the enclosure.  The heatsinks basically are in contact with the bottom, as are some side supports, but the top area is open (it's where the secondary controller is), so it's just air up there.  A temperature pattern like that is expected for the device.

Gotta love the fact that they're responsive and knew the answer immediately.  Even though my dealings have been limited with them so far, I've found them to be exceptional.

Actually it's a more subtle decision than that.

 I have wooden shelves, so the hot surface is facing up. This takes advantage of convective and radiative cooling. If I had metal shelving, I would have laid it on metal shelf to see if the added thermal conduction is an improvement.

My zoomhash unit didn't have any blockC stickers, it apparently came from either ehash or the manufacturer. That means no US warranty , I would rather have one with blockC warranty. It was also missing a cable that connects the miner to RPi, fortunately, Tom at oregonminers was kind enough to mail me a couple free of charge (wasn't able to contact anyone at zoomhash today).

This isn't entirely true - I did a bulk purchase of miners directly from BlockC, and they came without stickers.  It just means they were from the firs 500 or so machines they received I think.  Any of the later ones now include the stickers - and I actually have one I bought on eBay that does.

BTW, I have them all in my mega plenum - running like a champ!

Good to hear, as long as blockC addresses if anything were to happen to the miner, since I can't run it until I get the connector. BTW, what type of fan and connector are you using for PSUs? Very nice and clean setup!

I'm still tweaking the design, but I think I've finally come up with a good near-silent mod for the IBM 2880W PSU's... I ran out of the controllers, but it has a temperature controlled PWM fan module which I'm splitting between the two units until my new ones arrive.   The fan itself is this one:

Which I quite like so far... It's a server class fan comparable to Delta or any of the other reputable manufacturer.  Because of the density of the components inside the PSU, I opted for a much higher static pressure fan than Kaze which I normally prefer.

I was in the same boat although I bought a bit more than that - and I'm glad I went with the Avalon's.  I did some ambient temperature test with the first one I had, and ran in in temps up to about 125f.  It works fine until about 105-110f, then it drops down to probably 1/2 hash rate, then at about 115-120f it stops hashing altogether.  It keeps running the fan and keeps everything as cool as it can, and didn't suffer any ill effects from the testing.  My only real complaint is that once the temperature starts dropping, it doesn't automatically resume - but that's something that could easily be fixed in the hardware.

I also love the turnaround time BlockC gave me - I got the invoice on Wens, wired the money on Thurs, they sent the units on Fri, and I was setting up miners on Monday.  All this while I'm still waiting on 14+ S7's I've ordered from Bitmain over a month ago...
