Facts about the So-called "Shen Yun" Performance of the "Falun Gong"
2015/04/15

Recently, there are often pamphlets and posters seen in apartment buildings, supermarkets and restaurants in Washington, DC and places nearby that promote and praise the so-called "Shen Yun" performance to be staged at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC from April 17 to 26, 2015 in an attempt to round up more audience. It may appear to be a performance intended to display Chinese culture, but the Chinese Embassy in the US hereby reminds those who are interested in the Chinese culture that "Shen Yun" is not at all a cultural performance in the common sense. It is necessary to find out more about the so-called "Shen Yun" and the "Falun Dafa" before you decide to watch the show.

1. "Falun Gong" is an anti-society cult.

"Falun Gong", also known as "Falun Dafa", was founded by Li Hongzhi in China in the early 1990s. This organization preaches heretical fallacies that are anti-humanity and anti-science, and exercises extreme mental manipulation on followers. It is a cult that seriously harms the society and violates human rights, and is a cancer in the body of the modern and civilized society. Li Hongzhi, the chief ring leader of "Falun Gong", claims that the mankind has been destroyed 81 times, and that he has delayed the explosion of the earth by 30 years. He claims that the mankind is corrupted, and the earth is the biggest dumping ground of the universe, and that by practicing "Falun Gong", the "true law" above all religions, one would never become sick or get in danger. He even claims that the Holocaust of Jewish people by Hitler was a result of the changes in celestial phenomena. According to incomplete statistics, over 1,000 cult practitioners in China died because they followed Li's teachings and refused to seek medical treatment for their illnesses. Several hundred practitioners committed self-mutilation or suicide. Over 30 innocent people were killed by mentally deranged practitioners of "Falun Gong". "Falun Gong" claims to advocate "truthfulness, benevolence and tolerance", but in fact, the cult tolerates no opposing views whatsoever. It has, time and again, organized practitioners to besiege ordinary Chinese citizens, media and government institutions who questioned its fallacies. To find out more about "Falun Gong" organization, please visit www.facts.org.cn.

2. "Falun Gong" is a political group that is extremely anti-China and attempts to undermine China-US relations.

To protect human rights and the interests of the public, the Chinese Government outlawed "Falun Gong" cult in accordance with law in 1999. But here in the United States, the cult appears as a "religious group" and continues to deceive the public and preach cult messages. In addition, it is also engaged in anti-China political activities aimed at undermining China-US relations. From fabricating stories to attack and vilify the Chinese Government and filing unwarranted lawsuits against Chinese Government institutions and officials to harassing the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in the US and engaging in anti-China propaganda aimed at undermining China's stability and overthrowing the Chinese Government, the cult group has turned into a downright anti-China political group. The cult and its anti-China activities have met with widespread opposition and condemnation from the Chinese community in the US.

3. "Shen Yun" is a political tool of "Falun Gong" cult and anti-China propaganda.

The so-called "Falun Dafa Association of Washington, DC" and the "Shen Yun Performing Arts" are controlled by "Falun Gong" cult. They have been staging the so-called "Shen Yun" performances in the US in recent years in the name of promoting Chinese culture and showcasing the oriental charm. But in fact, in addition to their tacky taste and low artistic standards, the performances were filled with cult messages and implied attacks against the Chinese Government. Li Hongzhi himself has claimed openly that it was he who instructed the various "Falun Gong" groups to organize the "Shen Yun" performances, and that they were aimed at "showcasing the practitioners, salvation and telling the truth" rather than "entertaining the ordinary people". He has claimed that in the course of performance, "the whole stage is filled with divine beings offering help." Clearly, the so-called "Shen Yun" is not a cultural performance at all but a political tool of "Falun Gong" to preach cult messages, spread anti-China propaganda, increase its own influence and raise fund. It blasphemizes and distorts the Chinese culture, and deceives, fools and poisons the audience. This has in recent years prompted quite a number of US media to publish articles exposing what the so-called "Shen Yun" was really about. Some American audience who watched the performance later realized that they have been misled and have posted comments on internet to unveil the true character of the "Shen Yun" performances.

The Chinese culture, with its long history and rich variety, has long been popular among the American public. When endorsing or appreciating events and performances in celebration of the Chinese culture, you are kindly reminded to tell the true from the false and stay away from the so-called "Shen Yun" by the "Falun Gong" organization so as not to be misled and taken advantaged of by the cult.

Knowledge can save people from evil cults
By Zhu Yuan (China Daily) Updated: 2015-08-01 09:36

TV grab taken from CCTV (China Central Television) shows Zhang Lidong accused of killing a woman at a McDonald's restaurant in Zhaoyuan city in East China's Shandong province on 28 May 2014, stands trial at the Yantai Intermediate People's Court in the province's Yantai city in this 11 October 2014 file photo. [Photo/IC]

Someone has said truth lives in the cellar, error on the doorstep. This could be the reason why a destructive sect, whose doctrines are anything but truth, can fool many people into becoming its adherents.

A destructive sect was uncovered in South China's Guangdong province recently. It's leader claimed to be the incarnation of Buddha. Boasting of his power to accomplish magical feats, he organized a sect with thousands of followers, from whose donations he amassed a lot of wealth. And by portraying himself as a "living Buddha", he compelled a number of female adherents to have sex with him.

In his latest book Cults In and Out, Rick Alan Ross, an expert in the study of cults, says destructive cults have sprouted in the United States because they exploit religious beliefs, and some even define themselves as "religions" to get special protection and tax exemptions.

Indeed, the distinction between religion and sect is sometimes unclear as both call on their adherents to worship a god of their own. But as the examples Ross has cited in his book suggest, one of the most prominent features of most sects is the potential danger they pose to society in which they operate.

Other than the major religions whose fundamental principles guide believers to do deeds for the well-being of others and the world at large, sects of almost all hues tend to lead their followers astray - on the evil road that can ruin other people and even themselves.

In the latest cult fallout, five Eastern Lightning members beat a stranger to death in a KFC outlet in Zhaoyuan, East China's Shandong province, in 2014 simply because she refused to give her mobile phone number to them. Was there any reason for the innocent woman to give her cellphone number to a stranger? No religion grants a person the right to beat up, let alone kill, other people. If it does, it is not a true religion; it can only be the result of brainwashing by a destructive cult.

Ross dedicates his book to Hao Huijun and Chen Guo as well as other former members of sects who have moved on to find freedom of the mind. Hao and her daughter Chen Guo who used to be members of Falun Gong are survivors of self-immolation bids. Their tragedy of setting themselves on fire to strengthen the force of Falun Gong shows that the sect, like almost all other sects, teaches its followers not to think. Falun Gong followers strongly believe that practicing Falun Gong can cure ailments, from brain cancer to arthritis.

Falun Gong founder Li Hongzhi, according to Ross's book, has also told his adherents that they will appear younger and the elderly will have fewer wrinkles, which will eventually disappear, if they follow his teachings. More absurdly, he claims that women will get back their menstrual cycle.

All that Falun Gong teaches its adherents are obviously contrary to scientific principles and even common sense.

Yet why do people fall prey to destructive sects such as Falun Gong or the East Lightning cult? The fact that many elderly people were fooled into buying healthcare products that proved useless or even harmful to their health testifies to the sect mentality. Such people's gullibility comes from their wish to achieve what is beyond their means. Some wish to remain in the pink of health throughout their life, some are desperate to remain forever young while others hope that their adherence to a belief will keep them alive forever.

The semi-literate and undereducated who know little about the world and lack reason can easily fall prey to a sect. This is why Ross says that the key means of responding to destructive cults has always been education. The power of education can protect people from destructive cults. Knowledge about how destructive cults work will help people foil their recruitment tactics and exploitative means. Ross's book provides such knowledge.

Rob Anders and Falun Gong. What is This Really About?
A CULTURE OF DEFIANCE: History of the Reform-Conservative Party of Canada

"Rob is a true reformer and a true conservative. He has been a faithful supporter of mine and I am grateful for his work." ( Stephen Harper endorsing Calgary West Conservative MP Rob Anders)

In October of 2008, Harper MP Rob Anders, told a humanitarian rights lawyer that he believes Canadian diplomacy and humanitarian work should focus on changing foreigners' language to English and their faith to Christianity.

Ms. Kennedy-Glans, a Calgary West constituent, said she has come forward in the middle of the election campaign because she wants fellow voters to understand his perspective. She recognizes missionary work has value, but as the founder of a volunteer agency that helps train female professionals in Muslim countries such as Nigeria and Indonesia, she believes Mr. Anders' apparent views pose a security risk to Canadians abroad.

"If anybody in the world saw or heard that the MP in my riding was saying that he thought humanitarian agencies should go out and change religions, I am at personal risk and so are the volunteers that get on the plane and go do this work," said Ms. Kennedy-Glans, founder of Calgary-based Bridges Social Development. (1)

Naturally Anders claimed that his remarks were taken out of context, but another person who was privy to the conversation, states that Kennedy-Glans was accurate in her interpretation.

However, there was something else that was part of Ander's defense that I found interesting: He has also been a staunch defender of liberties of Falun Gong practitioners and Tibetans, harshly decrying the actions of the Chinese government.

Falun Gong is something that is coming up a lot with the theocons lately, here and in the U.S., which I've generally dismissed, but when one of the more controversial members of our government goes on record as defending them, I thought it warranted a second look.

From their own website: The Falun Gong teachings borrow terms and concepts of Buddha school and Tao school, but it is not a religion like Buddhism and Taoism. Falun Gong does not have any religious formality or worship .... And yet all of the claims made about their conflict with the Chinese government, cite religious persecution.

So What is Falun Gong?

First off, what I've discovered is that, like Yoga, it has helped many people, by combining a spiritual and physical regimen. But what I've also discovered is that it is a very powerful political movement, that has gained a lot momentum, earning the support of many western governments.

But it has also garnered warnings about cult-like practices, stemming from the beliefs of the movement's founder Li Hongzhi, which can be found in his own writings and interviews with foreign press. For instance, he claims that the Earth is under attack from extraterrestrial aliens who are getting ready to clone and supplant the human race even as we speak. From Time magazine, May 1999:

Suddenly, however, conversation veered to a topic Li has thus far broached to none but his inner circle: aliens on earth. "One type of alien looks like a human but has a nose made of a bone ... others resemble ghosts. The extraterrestrials, who arrived circa 1900, have not been idle. "Everyone thinks that scientists invent on their own," said Li, "when in fact their inspiration is manipulated by the aliens." The aliens intend to replace all humans with clones, he added. "In terms of culture and spirit, they already control men." (2)

And also from his book Zhuan Falun:

Li's rambling dissertation, Zhuan Falun, has only added to accusations that Falun Gong is a cult. Li writes he can personally heal disease and that his followers can stop speeding cars using the powers of his teachings. He writes that the Falun Gong emblem exists in the bellies of practitioners, who can see through the celestial eyes in their foreheads. Li believes "humankind is degenerating and demons are everywhere"extraterrestrials are everywhere, too and that Africa boasts a 2-billion-year-old nuclear reactor. He also says he can fly. (3)

Mythology in religion is nothing new, but he relies on a mythology of his own modern day creation. However, what warrants a second look are his remarks about homosexuality, that are not unlike those of some members of the Religious Right.

"Is homosexuality human behavior? Heaven created man and woman. What was the purpose? To procreate future generations. A man being with a man, or a woman with a woman-it doesn't take much thought to know whether that's right or wrong. When minor things are done incorrectly, a person is said to be wrong. When major things are done incorrectly, it's a case of people no longer having the moral code of human beings, and then they are unworthy of being human…

When gods created man they prescribed standards for human behavior and living. When human beings overstep those boundaries, they are no longer called human beings, though they still assume the outer appearance of a human. So gods can't tolerate their existence and will destroy them." (4)

However, after being accused of being not only a cult, but a homophobic cult, Li suggests that he is actually on earth to save homosexuals:

"Let me tell you why today's society has become how it is. It results from there not being an upright Fa to keep human beings in check. This Dafa is taught right in the most chaotic environment, at a time when no religion can save people, and where the circumstance is that no god takes interest in people anymore. The Fa is almighty. The best time periods wouldn't require such a great Fa to be taught. Only in the worst time periods can the power of the Fa manifest. There are other reasons, too."

"Let me tell you, if I weren't teaching this Fa today, gods' first target of annihilation would be homosexuals. It's not me who would destroy them, but gods. ... You know that homosexuals have found legitimacy in that homosexuality was around back in the culture of ancient Greece. Yes, there was a similar phenomenon in ancient Greek culture. And do you know why ancient Greek culture is no more? Why are the ancient Greeks gone? Because they had degenerated to that extent, and so they were destroyed." (4)

That same speech could have been given by John Hagee or Charles McVety. And yet we have a Parliamentary Falun Gong Friendship Group.

I understand that it was formed in response to human rights violations imposed by the Chinese government on practitioners of Falun Gong, but for someone like Rob Anders and other, what are being dubbed 'Christian Conservatives, who have little to do with Christianity or conservatism, there is a different agenda: anti-Communism.

Falun Gong and a Holy Purpose

Tim LeHaye, one of the founders of the American Religious Right movement, recently reassured his followers that Obama was not the Antichrist. He knows this because before the end times can occur, we must first get rid of communism. Apparently this was chiseled into a stone tablet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91pwDTSVsoc

This brings us to the reason why end timers defend the Falun Gong movement. They pose a direct threat to Communism in China.

Banning the fastest growing religious group in modern Chinese history may be a risky move for Beijing, but letting it flourish may have been even riskier. That appears to be thinking behind a government decision Thursday to declare the 70-million strong Falun Gong religious cult illegal. The move came as protests continued in Beijing and other major cities against the arrest Wednesday of thousands of members and leaders of the group. "The government fears that Falun Gong, as a nationwide movement with more members than the Communist party, could become a lightning rod for the political frustrations of a nation undergoing traumatic social and economic changes," says TIME correspondent William Dowell. "Their belief system is a symbolic representation of the difficulties of modern life, and that could make it a very powerful force in a largely peasant population easily swayed by mysticism." (5)

And:

Even more terrifying for the government is the possibility that Falun Gong could morph into a political organization, as has happened with other sects in Chinese history--most famously during the 19th century Taiping rebellion, when a martial-arts cult triggered a civil war that left more than a million dead. But so far police have found no evidence of a political conspiracy, and the official media have accused Li of being a cult leader who promotes superstition and witchcraft. (6)

And:

Historically, secret societies and spiritual masters have challenged, and even toppled, Chinese dynasties, and President Jiang Zemin has stressed a need to "suppress cults and the use of religion to engage in illegal activities." (2)

Rob Anders has always been a vocal opponent of China and communism in general. In 2000 he was lauded on the xtremist C-Far site, by Stephen Harper's old pal* Paul Fromm:

Wednesday night, at a Chinese New Year's celebration on Parliament Hill, he [Anders] was asked by officials of the Red Chinese Embassy to leave because he was quietly wearing a tee-shirt calling on the Communist Chinese to get out of Tibet. The shirt also proclaimed: "Stop Tiananmen tanks, forced abortions, burning books" and "Independent Indo-China, Korea, and Taiwan." (7)

As an elected Member of Parliament, this is not the way to go about opposing a foreign country.

He was also the only MP to deny an honorary citizenship to Nelson Mandela, which would have had more meaning if it could have been unanimous.

I don't think that, you know, anybody would argue that if Nelson Mandela was saying, you know, 30 years ago, that you should go around with matches and necklaces and strangle people or burn them out of their homes, that is not terrorism ... "[Honouring Nelson Mendela is a] total political-correctness poster-boy thing... He was a Communist. He was a terrorist... " (Cool

Human rights abuses need to be challenged by any government, but is it wise to put so much support behind a political movement whose leader believes he can fly? (Stephen Harper only thinks he can walk on water) And should we not condemn their blatant homophobia? Despite the fact that it might give Jason Kenney a case of premature rapture-lation, Falun Gong's leader believes that only he can save Gays from annihilation, when no one else has even used the term.

However, there is another reason why we must proceed with caution.

The Falun Gong and Media Manipulation

Dr. Heather Kavan, a lecturer in Communication, Journalism and Marketing at Massey University, New Zealand, spent a year with the Falun Gong, to assess in part whether they were indeed a cult or as it's followers suggest an organization that promotes spiritual and moral well-being, and cures illness. Maybe it's both.

Dr. Kavan began her quest with empathy and a desire to learn why Falun Gong was banned, while she has no doubt that there are human rights violations against them, also discovered that "much of the material about Falun Gong in the Western news misleads the public."

Falun Gong, literally law wheel practice, is a new religious movement that is now illegal in China. Of all religious adherents, Falun Gong members are perhaps the most media savvy. They have despatched thousands of press releases, staged headline-generating events, maintained a strong Internet presence, and brought defamation suits against anyone who publishes unfavourable material. Consequently, Falun Gong adherents have been treated relatively kindly by the western press, who have sometimes supported their religious and political agendas.

While several studies have examined how Falun Gong, the Chinese media, and the Western media have framed and presented their material, from a practical perspective the issue of the material's accuracy is more important. Western governments' policies regarding human rights issues in China are often largely based on media reports ... (9)

This certainly shows things in a different light.

Conflict with the media has been central to Falun Gong almost since its inception, for it was not the Chinese government, but journalists, writers, scientists and ex-members who first criticised Falun Gong. Li's unscientific claims and professions of divine status invited scepticism, and by mid 1996 Chinese journalists began to publish critical articles about Falun Gong's supernatural beliefs and Li's egoism. In response, Li directed members to defend the fa (his spiritual law) whenever it was attacked. The protests were large and relentless.

... In China the media are free only as far as they facilitate social stability, so when Falun Gong threatened civil unrest, media managers were quick to capitulate to their demands. For example, when 2,000 protestors surrounded Beijing Television after the station broadcast a segment about a doctoral candidate who became psychotic while practising Falun Gong, the station fired the reporter, aired an immediate sympathetic portrayal, and – to show extra goodwill – handed out 2,000 boxed lunches to the protestors.

Having learnt that such protests were fruitful, Falun Gong members were unstoppable. To prevent social unrest, Beijing authorities introduced a blackout against any negative media reports on the movement. However, not everyone was aware of the blackout, and an obscure academic magazine in Tianjin published a critique of Falun Gong by renowned physicist He Zuoxin. The article might have gone unnoticed, except that six thousand Falun Gong protestors occupied the University over three days, demanding a retraction. The editors refused, responding that scientific publications do not print retractions. The protest developed into a riot – although this appears to have happened after the riot police arrived – and up to 45 people were arrested (the numbers vary in different accounts). (9)

So it would appear that the Chinese government is not suppressing religious beliefs, but a powerful political movement that threatens to create social unrest. Dr Kavan concludes:

At the heart of the battle between the Chinese government and Falun Gong are two warring ideologies with highly committed protagonists. Both use the media as pawns. Both use the same rhetorical strategies: issuing blanket denials when accused, devising conspiracy stories, and redirecting allegations by accusing the other of the same thing. What is being played out is a conflict of intransigent beliefs. The Western media's uncritical acceptance of Falun Gong's version suggests that Li, by appealing to ideals of amelioration of suffering and freedom of religion, has produced a story that the West wants to believe. (9)

That the West WANTS to believe.

Kavan also mentions her own confrontation when news of her own story was leaked.

When the research was finished, I was quoted in a press release on new religious movements, in which I said that the FBI's definition of a potentially violent religion was so broad that several groups in New Zealand would fall into it, and cited Falun Gong as one of several examples. Falun Gong members monitor the media daily, and discovered the press release even before I did. They were offended that they were classified with other religions that they perceived to be "totally evil", and I received a phone call warning me that I would be deluged by a hundred callers from a Falun Gong email list. Several emotionally–charged phone calls followed, in which the callers demanded the press release be removed from the Internet. A member contacted me at home and relayed accusations that I was being paid large amounts of money by the Chinese government, and repeatedly said that the situation was "extremely dangerous". Each time I asked exactly what the danger was, she did not explain. (9)

We need to be very careful here, because even for those who oppose communism, is the alternative really better? Maybe for Rob Anders and other extremists, but Canadians have to be diligent, especially when we already have a Parliamentary Falun Gong Friendship Group.

Footnotes:

*In 1987 Reform Party member, Paul Fromm, arranged to have author and journalist, Peter Brimelow, speak at their convention. As reward, he was allowed to set up a table in the hall, where he distributed literature and sold memberships to his anti-immigration organization C-FAR. (10) Peter Brimelow's book Patriot Game: Canada and the Canadian Question Revisited, is said to have been one of the motivations behind the formation of the new party. After reading it, Harper and his buddy John Weissenberger, were so enthralled with the book that they bought ten copies and gave them to friends. (11)

On July 22, 1999, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China issued a notice declaring that the "Research Society of Falun Dafa'' and the "Falun Gong'' organization under its control had been deemed illegal, and were therefore banned according to law. On July 29, the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China issued a warrant for the arrest of Li Hongzhi, the self-appointed chairman of the "Research Society of Falun Dafa, '' and also issued a request for cooperation, through the China National Central Bureau of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), to the Interpol and its member states for the arrest of Li Hongzhi.

The exposes Li Hongzhi, the man and his deeds, and his malicious fallacies, and reveals cases, in which people have died or become mentally disordered as a result of practicing and being obsessed with "Falun Gong.'' Included in this column is only a small part of the large number of those cases. The column also gives examples of Li Hongzhi's other crimes to violate the law and harm the society.

Numerous facts prove that Li Hongzhi and his "Falun Gong'' organization have caused serious health problems and deaths among people they duped, and that "Falun Gong'' is not a religion but a cult that brings harm to the society and an illegal organization that engages in law-breaking activities.

We believe that this column will help people to see clearly the true nature of Li Hongzhi and his "Falun Gong'' organization.

Li Hongzhi and His Heretical Fallacies

"Falun Gong'' is a kind of cult that harms the society and an illegal organization that has emerged in some parts of China over the past few years to engage in law-breaking activities. For the expansion of this organization, Li Hongzhi, its founder, concocted and propagated a set of lies and heretical fallacies to deify himself and instill them into practitioners of "Falun Gong'', so as to control them organizationally and spiritually. Li Hongzhi's anti-humanity, anti-society and anti-science words and deeds have already caused serious damages to society.

Li Hongzhi's Background

Li Hongzhi was born on July 7, 1952, in Gongzhuling City (formerly Gongzhuling Town of Huaide County), in northeast China's Jilin Province. From 1960 to 1969, he studied successively at the Changchun Zhujiang Road Primary School, Changchun No. 4 Secondary School and Changchun No. 48 Secondary School. After 1970, he first worked at an army stud farm, and later served as a trumpet player in a band of the Jilin Provincial Forestry Armed Police Corps. From 1978 to 1982, he worked as an attendant at a guesthouse run by the Jilin Provincial Forestry Armed Police Corps. Between 1982 and 1991, he was a member of the security section at the Changchun Municipal Cereals and Oils Company.

Li Hongzhi began to propagate his ideas of "Falun Gong'' since the early 1990s. Initially, he fabricated the so-called "way of practice'' of "Falun Gong'' by combining the movements of martial arts he had learned from other people a few years before with movements imitated from traditional Thai dancing. At first, he earned money by teaching people to practice "Falun Gong.'' Later, when he found that few people took interest in his "way of practice,'' he changed the way of amassing money to treating people with diseases by "exerting his energy potency.'' But, cheating can never last long. So, after a period of scheming, he concocted a set of lies and heretical theories of "Falun Dafa'' and founded the "Falun Gong'' organization with overtones of a cult, thus further embarking on a road of crime.

Later, Li fabricated his background, saying, "I was born in Gongzhuling City, Jilin Province, on May 13, 1951. When I was a child, the Law Master Quan Jue gave me secret instructions to turn me into a Buddhist believer. My training was completed when I was eight years old.

"At the age of 12, the Taoist Master Baji Zhenren (Eight-Pole Immortal) taught me Taoist practices.... In 1972, I received Taoist instructions from Master Zhendaozi (True Taoist), and in 1974, I received further training in Buddhist cultivation and returned to public life.'' In books compiled by the "Falun Gong'' organization, it is stated, "At the age of eight, Li Hongzhi attained the superb Great Law with great supernatural powers, such as the ability to move objects (without lifting a finger), fix articles (at whatever spot), control other people's thinking and make himself invisible.... His energy potency reached an extremely high level. He understands the truth of the universe, has insights into life and can see the past and future of mankind.''

In fabricating his life story, Li changed his date of birth from July 7, 1952 to May 13, 1951, and he personally altered his date of birth and acquired a new ID card. But the date of birth remained July 7, 1952 in the forms he previously filled in for determining his grade on his unit's payroll, applying to join the Communist Youth League and obtaining his ID cards issued on December 31, 1986 and March 31, 1991 respectively.

Why did Li make this change? In the Chinese lunar calendar, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month is believed to be the birthday of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, and May 13, 1951 happened to be such a day. Thus, by changing his date of birth, Li intended to indicate that he is "a reincarnation of Sakyamuni.'' Moreover, he also had a photograph taken of himself in a stage costume he bought from a store to give himself the "image of Buddha'' sitting on a lotus flower.

However, many of Li's former schoolmates, teachers and neighbors, when interviewed, all said Li Hongzhi was no more than an ordinary child obtaining average marks in his studies. In their reaction to his fabricated story of "spiritual cultivation,'' their answers were either "nonsense,'' or "impossible,'' or "I have never seen or heard of that.'' His superiors and roommates at the stud farm and the forestry police corps also said he was just an ordinary serviceman in an art troupe. They explained that the full schedule of rehearsals and performances, as well as the strict militarized routine and tight time schedule in the forestry police corps could not possibly leave him any spare time to practice his so-called "great law.'' His colleagues at the municipal cereals and oils company also said that Li Hongzhi knew nothing about the so-called "way of practice'' and "spiritual cultivation'' at all before he joined a qigong (a system of movements and deep breathing exercises -- Tr.) training class in 1988. In general, no one who had been on familiar terms with him knew anything about him acquiring the "miraculous abilities'' he himself boasted about.

When Li's acquaintances asked him why he made up his life story, Li answered, "No one would believe me if I do not exaggerate a little bit.''

But these completely fallacious "miraculous abilities'' deceived many practitioners of "Falun Gong'' who knew little about him.

The Heretical Ideas Advocated by Li Hongzhi

Li Hongzhi has preached his heretical ideas and fallacies on every possible occasion, and included these absurdities in several books, such as Zhuan Falun and Falun Fofa. These books have been widely circulated. The following fallacies, which Li Hongzhi has repeatedly preached to the practitioners, are all from the books he and his principal followers wrote and sold as well as from the cassette and video tapes of his speeches:

(1) Hawking the theory of "doomsday" by declaring that mankind has come to the brink of destruction

On many occasions Li Hongzhi told his audience: "The human race has experienced many destructive catastrophes," ... "the next destruction -- complete destruction -- will come soon. It will be destruction of both the form and the spirit, and will be really horrible." He said during one speech, "Please tell everyone around you that the present time is near the point of extinction for the human race. All the devils will emerge this time, according to Sakyamuni." He told his followers, "I have found that mankind has experienced 81 calamities in the past, and each time there were only a few people who survived." He declared, "Mankind on this Earth faces inexorable doom. Our planet should have been totally destroyed last year, according to my calculations." He said it was he himself who had made the destruction postponed by 30 years.

(2) Cursing the human race and regarding the Earth as a rubbish heap

When preaching to practitioners of "Falun Gong," Li Hongzhi repeatedly told them that mankind was very dreadful. He said, "If you look around, you will find that the human world today is extremely terrible, really terrible, full of vicious persons." Again, "The human race, as a whole, is deteriorating, and there are devils everywhere." He further explained this view by saying, "The human race, while developing to the present stage, has become distorted and is full of evil. Hence, the gods have completely lost confidence in mankind. This is one of the major reasons why the gods do not care about human beings any more." He also told his followers, "The reason why you were born on the Earth was not merely to be human. You should have the goal of gaining complete understanding about the world, as well as the rest of the universe, so as to escape confusion and return to the other world. However, there are some people who cannot do this. As a result, they have to be born into the world again and again according to the doctrine of samsara, until the world comes to an end. That's why the Earth has experienced many catastrophes." Li also said, "Usually, bad people fall down in the universe, dropping into the central part of it, which is the Earth. Consequently, the Earth serves as the rubbish heap of the universe." He added, "Those who have descended to the level of ordinary people are destined to be destroyed."

(3) Negating modern science and urging his followers to eschew science

Li Hongzhi proclaimed to practitioners of "Falun Gong", "Science today is not science in the real sense ..., because you can never use this science to probe into the profound mysteries of the universe." And, "The (science and) technology of mankind cannot reach a high plane of understanding.... Yet, we practitioners (of "Falun Gong") can, and Buddha is a scientist at the highest level." Also, "The science of mankind today is, in fact, developed from a wrong basis; its understanding of the universe, mankind and life is all wrong. So, in our circles of practitioners we never acknowledge modern science, holding it to be erroneous."

(4) Claiming that only he himself and his "Falun Dafa" can save mankind

Li Hongzhi repeatedly told practitioners of "Falun Gong" that "`Falun Dafa' has, for the first time since the Creation, enlightened human beings to the characteristics of the universe (Law of Buddhist), which is tantamount to providing mankind with a ladder to Heaven." He said, "Now I am the only person in the world who can spread the orthodox Law of Buddha. Therefore, I am doing a deed that has never been done by our predecessors. Indeed, I am doing something people have never done before -- propagating the fundamental law of the universe, which you cannot read in any book, past or present, Chinese or foreign. The theory I propound is related to the nature of the universe; it is the fundamental Law of Buddha." He also said to the practitioners, "I am here to save you from this miserable world. If I cannot save you, there is no one in the world able to do so." "Existing human society has deteriorated to its extreme point. Hence, no one cares about you, except me; the others just watch you being destroyed." "My law-bodies [supernatural replicas of himself existing in the ether, apparently -- Tr.] are so numerous that they are beyond calculation. Therefore, I can look after as many people as I want, maybe the entire human race."

(5) Claiming that diseases are "karma retribution" and forbidding his followers to consult doctors or take medicine

"Karma" is a Buddhist term, basically having neither good nor bad connotations. Li Hongzhi, however, used it to express the concept of retribution for sin. He preached to the practitioners of "Falun Gong", "The basic cause of all illness and misfortune is `karma'." Illness came from a kind of "field of karma formed by black materials." He continued, "Karma is the fundamental cause and the most important source of illness."

"Birth, old age, disease and death are preordained," he claimed. "They are karma retributions. Once you owe debts, you have to repay them." "Illnesses are caused by karma. If one cannot get one's karma dispelled, one's illnesses can never be cured completely. Only by practicing `Falun Gong' can karma be dispelled. No other means will do." He also said, "The essence of illness is the problems in another space reflected in this space. For instance, if pathogenic bacteria live in another space, how can man deal with them? So we practitioners do not talk about illnesses, because they are all the results of karma."

Furthermore, "Those who sincerely practice `Falun Gong' will not fall sick or encounter danger." "The power achieved by practicing `Falun Gong' can automatically eliminate viruses and karma. Taking medicines merely presses back karma, making it impossible to cleanse one's body; so medicines are not able to cure diseases. One who passes this barrier will become a superman."

(6) Claiming that he himself has "law-bodies" and has installed "wheels of law" in the abdomens of practitioners

Li Hongzhi claimed to practitioners of "Falun Gong", "None of you, my disciples, or masters of other schools of qigong, has law-bodies. As far as I know, I'm the only one in the world who has law-bodies." "I have countless law-bodies, who look exactly like me. They are in another space, and can change their sizes limitlessly and freely." He went on to say, "I am the main body, but they (the law-bodies) have the ability to do things independently. They can look after you, protect you, help you to practice, and do other things. They are actually embodiments of me. That is how I can protect you." Li Hongzhi added, "Most of my law-bodies wear the kasaya [Buddhist robe -- Tr.], and they have curly, blue hair, as blue as a sapphire."

"Today, human society is extremely chaotic and dirty," he told "Falun Gong" practitioners. "Human beings are stained with too much karma and evil thinking. But I can rid you of all that, and install in you the bright golden `wheels of law,' together with many other things included in `Falun Dafa,' so that you can cultivate yourselves and purge your hateful, dirty bodies.... This is a precious chance never met before since remote antiquity; you are incomparably lucky to have it."

He said, "The `wheel of law,' which I install in a practitioner's abdomen, revolves 24 hours a day. It automatically helps the practitioner in his or her practice. In other words, although the practitioner is not practicing all the time, the `wheel of law' is cultivating the practitioner non-stop."

(7) Distorting and belittling religion and claiming that "Falun Dafa" is the "orthodox law"

In the guise of "Law of Buddha," Li Hongzhi usurped some religious terms and distorted Buddhism. His heretical ideas are in essence anti-religious. Li Hongzhi called his "Falun Dafa" the "highest Law of Buddha" and the "orthodox law" superior to all religions. In order to make the practitioners of "Falun Gong" have total faith in "Falun Dafa" and abide by the doctrines of his heretical cult, Li Hongzhi forbade the practitioners to believe in any religion. He said, "The existing religions cannot save people from torment any more. They cannot help you attain self-cutivation, and so are on a low plane. Why should you want to adulterate the "Falun Dafa"? You must shun the things on a low plane because they will cause confusion in the body you have cultivated or the things you will get from practicing "Falun Gong". In that way, you will not be able to return home, but will undermine the road for your advance." He further claimed, "As for Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism and some other religions, I admit that they have been orthodox religions in history. However, in this historical period and in this society, when the concept of mankind is being modernized, it has become impossible for people to understand the true concept of the nature of man from ancient ideas.... You cannot understand the old religions, and of course you cannot be converted by them. Consequently, they will not care about you." "I tell you this because I'm afraid you may be led astray by the religions that cannot relief people of their torment."

He also said, "Some religions have come into being in this century. No, not only this century, over the past few centuries many new religions have appeared. Most of them are fake."

Leaders of China's religious circles pointed out that not only do Li Hongzhi and his "Falun Dafa" have nothing whatsoever to do with religion, their heretical ideas are directly opposed to religious doctrines, and are therefore anti-religious.

Advocating Heretical Ideas in Order to Control the Minds of the Practitioners of "Falun Gong''

Li Hongzhi advocated the theory of the imminent doomsday'' of the world, claiming that he himself was the sole savior now, and that only he and his Falun Dafa'' could ward off the inevitable disasters and sufferings. He ordered the practitioners of Falun Gong'' to obey him absolutely, and to think and act in strict accordance with his teachings so that he could control their minds. Li Hongzhi had advocated the doctrines of his cult and adopted all sorts of heretical means to control the practitioners of Falun Gong,'' resulting in the deaths of many Falun Gong'' practitioners and serious damage to the health of many others.

Li Youlin, a farmer from Chengren Village, Anshu Town, Dongliao County, .Jilin Province, was infatuated with "Falun Gong." On May 21, 1999, he said to his wife: "Tomorrow is my master's birthday. I'll go and burn joss sticks for him." On May 23, he was found to have committed suicide by hanging himself.

On the spot, he left a picture of Li Hongzhi and the remains of seven joss sticks.

According to incomplete statistics collected from some provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, 1,404 people have died as a result of practicing Falun Gong,'' and still more of others have been found to be suffering from mental disorders for the same reason. According to doctors at the Beijing University of Medical Science, since 1992 the number of patients with psychiatric disorders caused by practicing Falun Gong'' has increased markedly, accounting for 10.2 percent of all patients suffering from mental disorders caused by practicing various qigong exercises. In the first half of this year, the number rose further, accounting for 42.1 percent. Among those who died as a result of practicing Falun Gong,'' some were deceived by Li Hongzhi's doctrine of karma,'' and refused either to consult doctors or take medicine when they fell ill; others became mentally deranged in the course of practicing Falun Gong,'' and either committed suicide or killed others. What is more tragic is that some victims had put so much faith in Li Hongzhi and his Falun Gong'' that they, even when suffering from pain caused by diseases, had let go untreated on his orders and blamed themselves inwardly for not having enough faith in Master Li'' and not having achieved higher attainments in the practice of Falun Dafa.'' Personal and family tragedies thus caused are too numerous to mention one by one.

On the early morning of August 11, 1999, out of his belief in Li Hongzhi's preachment about the "end of the world," Tang Quhua, a Sichuan farmer and a "Falun Gong" practitioner, cut off his two-year-old son's genitals and then mutilated himself with a kitchen knife. Father and son are now out of danger after emergency treatment given to them.

Liu Pinqing of Donggang City, Liaoning Province, became mentally abnormal after he started to practice "Falun Gong" in August 1998. He said many times that his master Li Hongzhi had asked him to burn himself to death so as to become a Buddha. He also said that Li Hongzhi wanted him to become a Buddha in a well. He finally committed suicide on April 27, 1999 by jumping into a well. His wife points to the well where Liu Pinqing died.

It is necessary to point out here that while Li Hongzhi told others not to consult doctors or take medicine when they were sick, he did not himself practice what he preached. Many bills for reimbursement, turned in by Li Hongzhi and his family members after consulting doctors and buying medicine, have been found. Now that his preposterous fallacies have been exposed, Li Hongzhi is trying to deny that he advocated them. Yet, he himself has compiled, printed and distributed books extolling such fallacies. How can he deny them when they are printed in black and white?

Li Yingjie (right), vice director of the Jilin City People's Hospital, who performed the appendicitis opration on Li Hongzhi, explains Li's case.

Li Hongzhi ordered "Falun Gong" practitioners not to take medicine or go to hospital, but he himself not only consulted doctors, he also took medicine. These are some of Li Hongzhi's bills for medical treatment in seven hospitals in Changchun.

No responsible government in the world would tolerate a heretical cult running rampant and depriving people of their lives and health. In this regard, there are clear-cut stipulations in China's laws. Li Hongzhi can never escape retribution for the crimes he has committed.

It is good to ask questions here in Quora, but it is good to understand that the answers may be biased. With a high likelyhood many answers may carry a standpoint from the answerers personal view. What comes to whatever Li Hongzhi says, it is all bias to his standpoint aswell. This person has solely and onesidedly established a cult, which carry the weight of his teachings and his opinions. Clearly, the book of Zhuan Falun he wrote beginning of 90s, and which has become "the Bible" for any Falun Gong practisioner, has his viewpoints deeply carved in. All practisioners are instructed to read Zhuan Falun several times, as they will "become to understand" during this "process". My personal opinion on his mixed-race and anti-homosexual agenda is very simple; it does not go along with my personal views and understanding. As with any cult and religion, it is the person who gets into the cult who then will be facing such doctrines and must make up one's own mind. My worry is that from being a "harmless meditation practise" the core of the Falun Gong teachings by Li Hongzhi seems to be twisted very tightly around his teachings and his view of matters, that he claims to be from "gods". When we join this "god sent anti-something" message with disciplined physical practises and a path to follow, one could legitematly ask if this is justified. I am talking about the millions of practisioners, who actively practise Falun Gong, and if they truly are "Master's disciplines", they are expected to not questionize him. Every "true" practisioner knows this, and if any practisioner says otherwise, I say that person is lying. So, what this leaves us is somewhat a controversial combination of self-victimizing, anti-CCP, anti-homosexual, anti-mixed race and more, agenda and cult that for some reason attracts a lot of people. I am very concerned about the direction this cult has taken in terms of mixing "harmless meditation" with these pretty extreme views from it's non-questioned, undisputed "Master". Who by the way lives in United States and is seemingly doing well and has also gained several awards. If the United States let's this sort of movement roam without any control just based on the 1st amendment right, I would be very very concerned. Just my view. But everybody dealing with Falun Gong should exercise caution, just because of the strange combination of hatery anti-speech mixed with "compassion and tolerance" message and meditation. For me this formula is not working.

Falong is a complex mix of traditional Chinese beliefs, mythology and mediation practice.  It would take considerable study for a Westerner to understand.  This leads to it being fairly easy for Falong to appear as a "persecuted Religious Group" to Westerners.  However, the materialistic bias of Chinese culture likely makes it much easier for them to see cult and evil for exactly what it is.  Hence I do agree that Falong is a cult, and is evil.

Sort of the Scientology of China, maybe.

I have read Zhuan Falun multiple times and thereby I have understood the thrust of the teachings without difficulty, as a Westerner. People who say that the teachings are complex are simply ignorant about spiritual literature. If the OP has never read ZF then what is the point of his thread??

Can you please define a "cult"?
How can you know what Dafa is about without reading ZF? I think that none of these authorities that you are quoting have ever read ZF, for example the source that said that practitioners are instructed to leave society is mistaken and obviously did not read ZF. At any Dafa gathering you can get the booklets which describe the evidence behind the organ harvesting. I think that no state had the right to persecute the people, but that goes on every day in China where there is no religious freedom when it comes to being a Dafa practitioner. Since the people cannot express their opinion on this matter, they cannot speak out and practice freely, and that is unconscionable treatment, it is not in line with the Western idea of rights and discussion Of the reality of persecution is unavoidable in this thread.
