Booooooo..... one of the hashing boards on my lone S5 just bit the dust. Was hashing away just fine... then suddenly it wasn't. Power cycling didn't help... changing cables around didn't help... testing the board by itself... no joy. Guess I'll finally be retiring it... suppose it's a good thing... I'll save that electricity cost

Go figure... the hashing board magically came back to life. No clue... either why it went down initially, or why it's suddenly hashing again. Previously it was showing "---------". Now it's hashing away happily. Maybe I won't be retiring it just yet... yes, I know the thing is just costing me money... but then again, pretty much all of my miners are at this point.

I've had similar things happen with my S3+ and S5, but they are good ol' work horses and have always come back to life. They just don't make 'em like they used to (coughcough S9 coughcough)...

LOL... The S1 was a tank. That was true set and forget mining. I got mine, plugged them in, immediately overclocked them to 200 and let them go. One of mine found a block about 2 weeks after being plugged in.
The S3s were a bit more finicky. You had to find the best frequency, and all of them were different. I had multiple batches. Some I couldn't even get to hash at the default frequency of 218. Others hashed just fine at 250. However, once you found the sweet spot, they just kept on hashing.
My S5 experience was similar to my S1... plugged it in, and pretty much forgot about it. Every now and then I'd have to reboot it because the web UI would not respond.
My S3s were the last piece of Bitmain gear I ever purchased (the S5 I received as payment for work I did). I've been very happily in the Avalon camp. I've got 20 A6. All of them just plain work. I've been looking forward to the Avalon 7 eagerly. I can't wait to see the specs - and most importantly, the price. Now that Canaan's acquisition is no longer happening, hopefully they can announce the A7 shortly.

Another diff increase. It's truly amazing how much hash power is out there. Think about it. If the network hash rate was averaging about 1.5EH last difficulty period, to raise it the 7%, that means another 105PH of gear was added. Who is adding that kind of hash? Nobody's selling any new hardware (at least to retail markets). Is it Bitmain replacing it's aging hardware? Is it another manufacturer keeping quiet about their own new hardware? Is it that the network was just lucky these past few difficulty periods and things were overcompensated? Who knows... Food for thought. To add 105PH, that's 8121 Antminer S9 (the 12.93TH batch 9 ones). I'd need 30000 Avalon 6 to hit that target... only need to add 29980 more

I threw a little bit on here (5TH) for almost 5 hours, it is all I could afford with the little bit of BTC I had in my Mining Rig Rentals account. When I get home I can switch some miners over and add another 7TH. If I actually hit a block and got that bonus I might be able to justify buying a S9, or hopefully we hear about an A7 soon.

They have exactly the same chance at solving a block, assuming the same number of shares are submitted.

sound fair :-) i can live with that edit: But when you search at higher diff, aren't the odds better of finding a block?

Not true. Unless the diff stays perfectly flat for 1000 hours or 42 days. But for shorter time within one adjustment it is true. Other factors are stales and invalids. Larger hash may have more errors.
