Hi,

Newbie in forum but Ive been checking bitcoin from 2012 ->
2013 I was mining Alt-coins with several gpu's, gained a little profit back then. After asic's came more regular thing I quitted.

Now I would like to get into bitcoin mining again.

I have "free" electricity.

Ive been thinking to get used asic's. Not sure if I should buy new ones? How long this things can run, are they good after use...idk.

Here is my options:

Antminer s7 - This is the newest and most power effective machine, but also expensive.

Antminer s5/4 - This I would need few to get same hashrate as s7.

Antminer s5+ - Needs a lot power but free electricity so not a big deal. (Can I even find new ones?)

What would be a best option to choose?
Also, there is coming? new 16nm chips, should I wait for them or buy now what I can effort and then sell it and buy newest with a extra money?

Im located to europe if that means something Smiley

Experts, im looking for your opinions.

S5 is a good middle ground, easier to manage fan speed/noise, if you managed to buy some BTC when it dropped, you might want to look into getting some S7 however. Its really about the acquisition cost. The big problem with the S7 is that it easily take 1400watts at the wall, so it would be better to use it on 240v. The whole setup would be very noisy however.

On 120v the S5 are much easier to handle, specially if you get ATX psu.

Ultimately it depend on what kind of setup you have/want, your Amp limit, how much noise you can make and which software you can find at good price.

No for S5+ and people selling them are selling them at way too high costs. Something like more than one brand new S7 per "block" (1/3rd of S5+).

S5+ costs ~2300$ new and hashrate 7.800 (@bitmain/"up coming)
S7 costs ~1800$ new and hashrate 4.800 (@bitmain)
For me s5+ looks better.. more hashrate and only little difference?
Noise is not a problem.

I wonder how we can reuse some old miners under 200 ghs?
Maybe for little bit of brute force or there is some better reuse. Roll Eyes
maybe for putting in solo mod and like gambling?

I think the most important question would be: how much free electricity do you have?

This can be a limit imposed by your datacenter/landlord, but it can also be caused by the wiring at the place where you store your miners...

If the amount of free electricity is high, i would personally buy miners with the lowest price/hashrate ratio i could find (given they are stable miners from a trusted seller). This will most likely send you towards second hand miners on this forum, or maybe some chinese miners from aliexpress.

If the amount of free electricity is low, i'd go for an S7 or an avalon6, since they'll produce more hashing power for the same electricity usage...

Noise is not a problem.

Where are you seeing S5+ for 2300$? They were sold once in very very limited quantity and then never again. It was just a design prototype for using up chips and a proof of concept for the S7 cooling designs.

Your options for buying in bulks are S4, S5, S7 and Avalon 6. If you find a private user that bought a tons of S5+ then and is now liquidating, i guess you could find a decent amount of S5+ but thats it. But S5+ for 2300$ new is a horrible price either way.

And a S7 costs under 1000$ new, closer to 900$ per. I am not sure why you are saying 1800$ per S7. You're looking at a 100% markup from the real price here. Double check your prices before getting ripped off royally.

TLDR at the price you "found", in truth the S7 brand new in bulk is way, way cheaper. But in actually accessible GH/$, its going to be S5's in bulk or S4. For example there is a guy selling like 39 S4 on the marketplace.
