Note, this coin has been opened and is for sale here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1339979.0

I have a graded 25 BTC Casascius coin that I'm considering selling in the near future.

The coin's public address is 1PtwkMfs6hdcLRyaYvTmwQvxPakRGokX3L.

The coin's total funded value is BTC40. I loaded the coin with an additional BTC15 in 2013.

I'm the original owner of this coin. I purchased it directly from Mike Caldwell.

I'd appreciate any assistance in determining the ballpark value of this coin.

Thanks very much, and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions!

If you're interested in a ball park value, I'd look at the premium on an ungraded coin and then a graded.

Typically I've seen 25BTC coins go for anywhere from 25.5 to 28BTC. Graded ones have grades from AU58-MS67(I haven't seen higher) and the MS67 had a premium of roughly 5-6BTC iirc.

Yours could have a premium of maybe 2-5BTC depending on the buyer. Some people don't like the idea of over funding it since it means you need to dish out more capital and 'may' affect resale value.

All of that said, it's a great looking coin and all the best to get it sold Smiley

As would I. I hate to see a Casascius get peeled but it might be a hard sell since it is funded so much higher than the face value. Even some 25BTC coins in great condition with provenance (the one by wheresmycoin comes to mind but I can't find the for sale thread) have had a tough time selling lately. I would definitely be patient as the market is rather slow at the moment.

With that low of a grade I would have offered 26BTC for it, but the over funding pretty much takes that off of the table for me. I think your best bet here is to peel the coin and sell it.

Agreed.  It doesnt have much collectible value being overfunded and a low ANACS grade.  I'd say its worth the value of the total loaded bitcoin and a peeled 25 BTC.

I would be interested in the coin.   Since this is not an auction, there is no sense bidding.  Let me know if you're going to sell.
David is on target with the value of the coin though.

I see, but according to what I've seen with such scam attempts, the thread usually links to another site. And the one you posted redirects to Ognasty's actual thread. Could you use the Quote function?

Uhhh, what?

The point is, there is a scammer trying to accept an offer already lower the previous offers on the coin with a nick similar to the seller and just registered.  Quotes don't matter.

My offer is 40.50

Hi, and thanks for all the responses so far!

For the record, I did not send the above quoted PM to Poloherb. Though I haven't been very active, you'll see that I did register my account here years ago. The message posted is from a new user with a name very similar to mine: their name has a lowercase Q where mine has a G! Anyway, please be careful. I'll report the scammer account and hopefully get them removed.

Some additional information about myself and the coin:

  • I'm located in the United States.
  • I was also surprised by the MS-62 grade. There's a tiny nick in the very edge of the hologram in one spot, so I wonder if that contributed to it.
  • There's also a strain mark in the plastic holder near the lower-right corner of the BTC symbol, I think because of the thickness of the coin in that spot. It's been there since the day I got it back from ANACS. This obviously doesn't affect the coin itself though.
  • Interestingly, at one point I sent ANACS a peeled 25 BTC coin, and they returned it ungraded saying that it wouldn't fit in their holder!

So you sent an extra 15 btc when bitcoin hit it's peak.  Was there a reason you did that.  Just wondering why you didn't use another cold storage method?

Probably wasn't the brightest idea I've ever had, but basically: I wasn't very aware of the collectable value of the Casascius coins at the time, and I wanted to consolidate some BTC value in the same (offline, physical) place. I've done dumber things, but this was (in retrospect) reasonably dumb. Oh well, live and learn, right?

Nah its not going to cost you much.  Like blazed said you probably would only get 26-27 btc for it anyway.  So even if you peeled it, got your bitcoin and sold the redeemed coin you would be in the same place anyhow.  Was just wondering.  Good luck with your sale.

Michail1, would you get it regraded??

No, I would keep the coin in the current state.  Because, it's nice to have the 'older' encapsulation cert date.

Would it grade higher?  Probably, but everyone knows older coins received lower grades.  Knowing this, it's better to have the lower cert number in my opinion.

I believe the OP is going to peel it and sell the redeemed coin since he would get about the same value as selling the coin as is and without the risk of shipping, etc.

Personally, I would rather see it peeled as it would raise the value of everyone elses since there would be one less in existance.   Smiley

If loglow peels the coins, redeems all BTC on it and then sells the empty coin + the peeled hologram + ANACS case he might get a nice price for it because it has a nice story  Grin
