It is an insane amount. It is a fair % of all the ETH in existence actually.
The Question is, how many ETH will remain there? Due to the split you can take them out (as long as you haven't voted I think.)
My bet is that for a while, most will remain there but this is new tech, hard to really wrap your head around the ideas and possibilities.

I imagine profits from projects invested in get reinvested into the DAO. And I read there was a bit more to it (Something about business IOU's - not sure there.). There is also pure speculative value (sort of like a PE ratio).

That's like saying the market cap of a corp can't be higher than the money in their bank account.  Once the Token is issued,  the rate of the token will be the market cap and that will be driven by speculation of how the money in the bank (eth) will be invested.

I bothered to read all the comments from the first to the last.
When I started I had a lot of questions, whose answers I found in the comments. I am happy to participate in this event. Even if not everything happen according to expectations of the optimists, this project paves the path that we all together will turn in path. It is normal to have difficulties and mistakes, but really, with BTC was the same. The beginning is promising. At least, it demonstrated a great desire to escape from the existing traditional patterns of functioning the capital. i think you can't

dont sell to low. just saying, the value of the dao is more as just the eth, they have. if i understood it right, they are going to burn like $10k a month and fund projects. the price is going to rise and if you bought with the 50% bonus then you bought cheap in.
