Ebay is great for getting second-hand stuff. We have an alternative to that already and it's decentralized and open source - OpenBazaar. However in my honest opinion Amazon is the better site for new stuff and a lot of my friends use it way more than Ebay. If Amazon adopts Bitcoin it would be a huge push for getting Bitcoin into the mainstream. If someone launches a Bitcoin alternative to Amazon with the scale and plethora of offered products it would be a dream come true.
Yes, open bazaar is trying to be the alternate of ebay and amazon, but they need to promote their site to all over the world, they are only advertising to those platforms where only bitcoin users available, they should also have to go to other sites.
Yes, we now have openbazar, which is palying a good role for bitcoin users to provide them everything which they want to buy with their bitcoins, they will soon replace paypal.

I dont think so that openbazaar will replace ebay or amazon, This two fiat currency sites are running online and anyone knowing internet can use them but openbazaar have to be downloaded after that only you can use their services, and most of them dont want to download and then use it, If openbazaar was online site just like ebay or amazon then their were more chances of it is getting famous.

I suggest we all bitcointalk members start campaigning for Bitcoin and send email in numbers to various sites like ebay,Amazon etc to press them for accepting bitcoin

That's not the right way to promote bitcoin. Those trading giants will automatically adopt bitcoin when they feel there are lot users who prefer bitcoin transactions.
I think it would help to bitcoin if a lot of people request to add a payment method with bitcoin. ebay party will certainly know the number of customers who want to use bitcoin for their payment. This course will give you an advantage also for ebay. because of course their customers will increase.

There's been enough publicity. That's not going to solve the overriding problem which is - what advantages does Bitcoin have for buyers? Unless they discount the hell out of everything there are somewhere around none.

Great point... even though it's still pretty young in terms of publicity, I think the word of Bitcoin has already been released in the mainstream a couple of times.  The fact of whether it was "good" publicity or "bad" publicity in the eyes of the public through the mainstream media is not really relevant.  I think the fact of the matter is that Bitcoin has been heard by millions of people and they know what it is and does.

Now, what fact that the public probably haven't heard in the "mainstream media" is that the cost reduction in sending funds over the internet... It's stupid how low of a transaction fee Bitcoin possesses in relation to paypal or Western Union... That's the biggest thing that Bitcoin needs to promote for itself.  Whether Bitcoin can handle the transaction size if it does get serious "mainstream publicity" and transactions sky rocket is another argument, and I think Bitcoin devs need to start taking a serious look at that.
But who will do that job of publicity? Bitcoin themselves can never go to the doors of people that come and join me, we all are using bitcoin and do not find a time to tell our neighbours about that currency, bitcoin need us for its publicity.

I think we need to, but even then bitcoin tanta be famous by itself, but it may be better promoted, because then trust people to bitcoin becomes higher and making invest their money into bitcoin. I think facebook and twitter have already done, but maybe we need a popular sales sites

We have several sites similar to Ebay, which accept payments in Bitcoin. But unfortunately, none of them can match Ebay in popularity and user-base. Two years back, Bitmit was shaping as a major alternative for Ebay. I don't know what happened, but one day that site closed down without any warning. Now we have sites such as Bitify, but they are not as good as Bitmit.

We need sites like eBay to make Bitcoin popular. However not many startups is willing to accept Bitcoin as the only mode of payment like how eBay only accept PayPal (as far as I am aware, they try to make people pay using PayPal). It's like the chicken and egg issue here, we need sites to accept Bitcoin only to make Bitcoin popular but sites will not accept only Bitcoin unless Bitcoin is popular.

It may be confusing. However, having merchants (such as NewEgg and Overstock*) that opened up Bitcoin as an alternative payment method have surely helped Bitcoin.

* though both is unlike eBay idea.

So sad! This profile does not appear as the #1 result (on anonymous) Google searches anymore.

we absolutely need something like ebay to promote bitcoin.
because I believe that the only effective thing that can help the adoption, and not only adopting new traders but adopting new real users is these types of places when regular people can actually spend bitcoin just like they spend money through paypal or other methods. sites like gyft,... have proven this already.

it doesn't matter how long you talk about benefits of bitcoin to new people, showing them sites like that does the work of a thousand words.

Well, I do agree that it will be a better thing for all Bitcoiners, and to a certain extent also for non Bitcoiners, to be able to spend their coins in more places, but this won't add much value to the point that it will give the average joes more incentive to jump into Bitcoin. Average joe type of people are very simple as they think like this - Why would I buy Bitcoin to spend it on Ebay or whatever other place, when I can buy everything already with fiat? In this case I happen to agree with them as well. Mainly because if you purely look at it from that point, then it doesn't make sense to buy Bitcoin first, where after that you spend it.

With only one popular site to advertise may not be that effective yet and that is why branding can be quite important for singapore. so we must really make full use of the social media to imprint a sense of branding on btc.

Ebay has played a great role in the success of PayPal in becoming leading payment processor.Do we need a similar ebay like site to popularize Bitcoin and make it leader in money transfer?

I had asked this before will eBay accept Bitcoin. I even had asked few sellers will they accept btc as payment however they said a no. They were just not ready for it. Plus the issue is we don't get guarantee if we do it. There is no doubt if eBay starts using Bitcoin it will shoot up. Every second guy will know about Bitcoins. But it's very difficult to see this happening, though I am dying for this to happen. It will make shopping so convenient. But for this we as customers have to make noise to get them on board.

Since bitcoin merchants are limited so bitcoin really needs it right now to help the adoption of it . The bigger and the popular the company the better like amazon and ebay but making them accept bitcoin will be hard cause many people are already demanding it but it keeps getting ignored maybe it will make a difference when at least half of our people demands it or maybe they are just afraid that bitcoin will be used for illegal purposes

By the way I know some two reputable online shops that accepts bitcoin

Yes in the world of bitcoin we need some sites like that which will have payments system as bitcoin. Currently there are some shops which accept bitcoin to provide goods but they are often a third party or they are much poor that they even are unable to promote their own sites so they remain dumped.

We don't need sites like ebay to promote bitcoin, we need ebay start accepting bitcoin. To start a site from beginning takes much time and takes more time to get reputation to become trusted like ebay. If ebay starts accepting bitcoin now, many people will use it, but if a new site accepts bitcoin, nobody will be influenced by that.

I have seen many websites, big ones (like Valve's Steam) that have implemented Bitcoin but it didn't make any change. In order to see a change, they need to somehow feature it on their website. Instead of silently adding it as a payment method, they should promote that on the first page, with a big ad. This way we'll see more people coming in our community. Yes, we need websites like ebay but unless they will feature Bitcoin in any way, we will see no change.

It would surely let bitcoins get some extreme exposure if they get listed as a way of payment at sites such as ebay and even if PayPal starts accepting it, then I think that Satoshi's dream of a million dollar bitcoin would become true in much less time. Bitcoins should get promoted on as much places as possible, so to let it become the mode of payments and used easily everywhere.

For now i still not seen any site that you can promote like ebay that accept bitcoin that honestly it is hard did you seen purse.io they are already added it few months ago and until now we are still not so well know currency.. we need more impression and i think that ebay can be also accept bitcoin in the future if there is someone can be partner in ebay that can accept bitcoin well it will happen like other site and service that are accepting bitcoin as payment..

Ebay has played a great role in the success of PayPal in becoming leading payment processor.Do we need a similar ebay like site to popularize Bitcoin and make it leader in money transfer?
The issue about this is regardless of whether or not there are people who would use the site, it's how many people will join Bitcoin because of it. Bitcoin needs something new and unique, that everyone wants to use, in order for it to gain popularity. Anything that is already done by fiat isn't something Bitcoin can use to compete with effectively.
