Is there something similar to mining for ripples? How is money distributed?

Are there still free Ripples being given away?  I have an old account, but not quite out of the newbie ghetto yet...

Yes, giveaway is still going on, just the amount of XRP given away is decreasing over time.
what is the rate?

Warning: this only works if your Bitcointalk account is older than 2013-02-19.

1) Make sure you are promoted to post outside of the Newbie ghetto.
2) Go to ripple.com and create a Ripple account.
3) Post your Ripple address here to receive free XRP: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145506.0
4) Check your Ripple client for giveaway XRP to arrive.
5) Once XRP arrived, click "Send" tab, transfer your XRP to my address rnZoUopPFXRSVGdeDkgbqdft8SbXfJxKYh, confirm.
6) PM me on Bitcointalk with your Ripple address (to check the amount of XRP that you sent) and your bitcoin address.
7) I will send the appropriate amount of BTC to your bitcoin address as soon as I confirm your transfer. Normally, it only takes a few minutes, but in the worst case it may be a few hours if I'm away from keyboard.

I only need a limited quantity of Ripple XRP for my experiments. So I reserve the right to stop buying XRP once I get enough. Any transfers I get in excess of my needs I'll return to the sender at once.

-----------------------------------------
Current rate: 50,000 XRP per 1 BTC.
If you send me 19,800 XRP received in a giveaway (the system won't let you send the last 200), you'll get 0.396 BTC.
You need to hurry though as either a Ripple giveaway or my buy-in program may stop at any time!

ahhhhh im tryin to get out of newbie forum how many posts do u need? guessing they might go by lurk hours too tho! i want btc so bad and im still lookin for help on mining with my card cuz cpu soooooooooo slow

I'm curious if you're thinking that you'd PREFER XRP to BTC. If so, why is that? The only reason I can think of is that it's going to be a more liquid market, which is terrific, but XRP has much less time testing than what BTC does. It hasn't "proven" itself in the way that BTC has. In that regard, I think BTC is more "stable". Plus that, you can trade BTC for XRP at any time through your own Ripple Wallet...

Furthermore, I think Ripple has the capability to add XRP to the system at any time. Kind of the functionality of a central bank. Kind of counter intuitive to one of the main reasons crypto-currencies exist, IMHO.

Hi
I've just joined this forum. Just wondering if you can give me some advice. I signed up with ripple.com (and mtgox and btc-e). Can you tell me how I go about buying a few XRP just for a speculative punt? There's something on ripple.com about needing 300 Ripples to buy more, but it doesn't say how to get those first 300. Seems like a Catch-22.
