I think I will agree with you if the person does not know how to turn gambling into profitable activity.  The truth is, gambling is not only all about betting, winning and losing.  Gambling can be a form of recreational activity where one person can have fun with his friends.  Old people use this for social interaction and have fun with their colleagues.  This somehow give them the sense to live and help in prolonging their lives.  Gambling can also use as stress remover.  It help busy people to unwind and be refreshed and enable them to do their job at 100% capacity.
