Someone recently told me that if you log into bitcointalk through tor or a proxy, you will receive a hundred "units of evil". He told me that you can't use your account unless you remove them. Is this really a thing? Do you really have to pay 0.1 to remove a unit of evil?

Sounds very strange, have you looked in the FAQ's (I wouldn't even know where to look for that) - What would happen if you were using an internet cafe and someone else logged in before you?  Would you get their "Evil"?

Is this a recent thing?

it's an old thing, actually. if the IP you're using have units of evil then you'll have to pay too.

yes for most tor exit node that have bunch of units of evil. and 1 unit of evil = 4023 satoshi so a hundred won't even get you 0.1BTC.

btw units of evils only takes effect when you register. if you registered using a clean IP before using tor/proxy/etc then you won't need to pay anything.

here's a link to theymos' post explaining it

In reply to --Encrypted-- re a post from 27 July 2014, 14:08:57 by theymos

When you register, the IP that you used when you submitted the registration form is used to calculate your evilness. The more frequently this IP or its neighbors were banned, the more evil is associated with your account. The amount of evil associated with an IP decays slowly over time, but the amount of evil associated with an account does not. You must pay or be manually whitelisted to enable posting on one of these "banned" accounts.

Here are some stats:

Evil% new users
053
0-135
1-104.4
10-200.80
20-502.2
50-1001.3
100+2.9

Currently each unit of evil requires a payment of 4023 satoshi. You only need to pay something if you have 1 or more, though.

Am reading the thread, but what triggers the ban?  (Or, shouldn't I ask in case it is construed as being trying to find a work around?)  Roll Eyes

I don't believe there is a specific trigger, the ban has to be applied manually by a staff member (if I'm understanding you correctly).

If I understand correctly, the originating IP of an account is what is used to calculate the amount of evil. If the account is banned, this IP then has a unit of evil applied to it (Not quite sure how much, 1 sounds like sensible to me however). If you then try to register* on an IP with a unit of evil >1, then you will have to pay a fee based on the unit of evil associated with that IP. This is why (AFAIK) it is expensive to register on a service such as TOR.

*I believe that this only applies to registering an account, not logging into an account. An account can be made on an IP with an evil unit <1 for free, then logged into from an 'evil' IP without any charge.

Someone recently told me that if you log into bitcointalk through tor or a proxy, you will receive a hundred "units of evil". He told me that you can't use your account unless you remove them. Is this really a thing? Do you really have to pay 0.1 to remove a unit of evil?
It's half true. It's not set that you will get 100 units of evil by logging in through TOR or a Proxy (though it is entirely possible depending on how commonly used the proxy is). Also, as I said earlier, I believe that units of evil are only applied to an account when it is being registered, not when it is logged into.

So technically if someone hacked into my computer or was routing his malicious bitcointalk spamming or ban-provoking posts through me (maybe I got hacked for whatever reason), as soon as I logged on through my home IP, I'd get an amount of "evil"?

However rare this might be, it's hardly fair.

Even nore on topic.
IF you use a proxy to Register you have to pay a fine. The fine is that your ip address is corrupted.
