A somethingawful post is to blame for the influx of so so so so so so many troll topics. If we stop responding to them, we can stop clogging up this forum with BS.

I say we go with our min 100 posts to start a thread. Or I may open another forum with an invite system or something. We need a place for the grown-ups to meet and get work done.

Please, please, please can we get a minimum post limit on thread starting.  Also, I do think it would be good for the grown-ups to have a private or perhaps moderated place to discuss.

Bitcoin Fact: the price of bitcoin will not be greater than $70k for more than 25 consecutive days at any point in the rest of recorded human history.

Just stop responding to them.  Think of this as growing pains, it sucks now, but we're going to be stronger/faster.

I would be very interested in a more serious, invite only message board/system.  It seems that much of irc has also become polluted.

Any system that gains sufficient social interest will also attract griefers. Griefing Bitcoin itself is too... well, impossible... so the griefers are targeting the community. Like Schumer's political attack, this too is part of growing and should be expected. It's up to the community members to remind each other never to feed a Mogwai after midnight... or well, feed trolls at all.

I made a graph of the problem.

      Time vs Quality of Posts
= +
=    +
=       +
=         +
=           +
=             +
=                +
=                   + (6/11/11)
=
=
======================================
                       Time

As you can see, it will only get worse. It's really hard for newcomers here because of all of the trolling. Something needs to be done. Maybe we need a karma system, like reddit, so that the higher-quality posts rise to the top.

Please donate if you like the graph/idea (addr in sig).

Won't help, they'll just piss allover existing threads until they get enough posts to start their own. The only solution is moderation, or if you find that unpalatable:

Just stop responding to them.  Think of this as growing pains, it sucks now, but we're going to be stronger/faster.

The better question is, has the bitcoin forum outgrown the capabilities of smf (http://www.simplemachines.org/)?

Offhand I don't have any good recommendations, but I know there things out there.  Is there a for pay service that hosts message boards with solid moderation and identity management (with reputation).

Maybe we should be creating some threads addressing how moderation could/should occur and see if there is some sort of community consensus.

If it comes to a new system, I like Vanilla IMO.

I support this.

Also, move to VBulletin, hash IP addresses, and for the most part a more private PM system.

Time is money. This means that if you have spare time, you can use it to make money.

The first week or so in the forums and IRC channels were awesome. I learned so much...

Pretty sure that's not coming back anytime soon Sad

Could we just get their Bitcoin addresses (like PM trolls telling them you will donate), and then DDOS the hell out of them?? Then they will never receive money with the same wallet ever again, and hopefully leave here as well.

It is a global network, there is no way to know if they are US based from their wallet address. It's not a federal crime to DDOS foreigners, and also Bitcoin is legally gray anyways.
