Can someone explain the merchant count?
32,000 a year ago, now 79 and counting?

As the websites you refer to are not initiatives of the LEOcoin Foundation, I have asked around.

The first website from Spring 2015 is a place for merchants to pre-register and start a KYC procedure in order to qualify. According to my latest information, this project was put on hold for a while and now had a soft restart in the second website (Summer 2016), where qualified registered merchants actually can offer products and services.

I have no possibility to check the actual amount of fully qualified pre-registered merchants, but it will be 5 digits. So the 79 is just the few that have started enfolding activities. I assume it is up to LEO Ltd. and LEO members to get the merchant platform moving ahead.

As LEOcoin Foundation, we do regularly speak with merchants and business owners and encourage them to accept LEOcoin payments, but as we as Foundation do not employ commercial activities, it is up to business owners to start an initiative themselves or to join that of third parties, like the websites you refer too.

This said, we do think that having merchants accepting LEOcoin payments and/or operating ATMs will certainly be beneficial for the LEOcoin ecosystem and for this reason are currently looking at the kind of promotion we can do - or support - to let the number of active merchants rise, then, as they say: the more, the merrier.

In this regard, I wish to point at the LEOcoin debit card initiative. When the card will be issued, LEOcoin owners that have applied for and received the LEOcoin debit card can use it to pay all merchants that accept credit cards.

Yes, as financial institutions cannot be trusted - after all they make money out of nothing (not even PoW) and ask interest for it on top of that - it is good to have a payment system without a third party nagging around. Something like digital currencies with a blockchain comes to my mind ...  and "how to reach trust in a distributed system?"

Till end of this year LEOcoin will be conected with visa or mastercard CC and you will be able to buy anything anywhere where visa or mastercard accept and also get money from
atm! Even on China!

Over 33k merchants and still counting

but was disappointed to see that there are only about six in Europe, with no details or links about them. I can't seem to find a hundred in total, never mind 33k.
Also, when I hover over the "Join as a Leo member" on that page, it asked me for a Sponsor Name.
Can you help?

My sugest as crypto traider last 5 years! You can sale LEOcoin for btc and with btc buy everything or trade btc for fiat and you got what you need!
So i dont see problem at all about merchants!

This was already answered. Please read the thread. In addition, LEO has announced a Visa or Master card on LEOcoin. In this way, you can pay with your LEOcoin account that is attached to the debitcard at any merchant or seller that accepts credit cards.

The LEO merchant program is not a LEOcoin Foundation project. We have no details or data to our availability. According to the latest information that I have gotten, there are currently a large number of pre-registered merchants which are fully KYC compliant, but likely not all of the 33,0000 that initially signed up. The project is on hold and the website is in beta-status. I expect that this will remain to be the case until LEOcoin has reached a higher stable price level.

As pre-registering was free for the merchants involved, the relatively high number mentioned on the website can probably be best explained by the fact that both existing LEO members as the new merchant could get a free LEOcoin award of 100 LEOcoin for pre-registration. At that time, prices of LEOcoin on the free market exceeded 1 GBP, so getting a free 100 pound was for sure attractive.

It is to be expected that once the merchant program will get activated, an overview of all merchants that accept LEOcoin will be given. At least, we as LEOcoin Foundation would strongly endorse such a thing. For more detailed questions with regard to this third party program, please contact LEO Ltd.

All great but as i say! With LEOcoin debit card with Visa or Mastercard you have few 10 milion merchant over night!👍🏼
