Danger when buying/selling BTC in person

So i was reading an article about someone who got robbed when he tried to buy in person 28000$ of Bitcoin

Personally i avoid dealings like this cause it is not easy to trust a random stranger.

Yeah, I've read the article and it was a disturbing news. I'm glad the attacker was arrested shortly afterwards but I can't understand why he was released later. If he really threatened a guy with a knife and took his money he should stay in jail IMO.

I don't like news like this one because they add to the bad reputation of Bitcoin, but if you use your brains just a little you can see that things like this happen without Bitcoin involved too, so Bitcoin is not the reason of this crime.

After the recent BitFinex hack I think next time I sell I'd rather do it in person, I trust my ability to look after myself in real life more than an exchanges ability to protect my coins.

but sadly this is hard. and I am speaking from experience. because I am doing this, not because I want to but because in my country there is no trusted exchange service, there are some random sites but they all are super shady and untrusted. so I have to find someone on the internet to sell for local currency and either receive it face to face or receive the money through bank. but it is hard to find that person and trust him and come to an agreement on the price because the low bid everything a lot.

Yes definitely. we know that this point of time, not all of us can be trusted. and more on you are selling a big amount of BTC. try to research if the person you are transacting with is a good person. and come to think of it, you can transact with him in a safe place where you can secure the place. You just need to be alert and responsible for your decisions sometime.

There is some danger I have to say, You are going with money to meet a stranger "regardless of you are carrying USD or BTC", I suppose it's a must to meet in a public place like a bank or a popular store, There I think the risk should be minimum.

Lesson learned. If you're doing a trade in real life, good for you. In fact, this is the way to minimise the risk. Getting mugged like that is one of the biggest concerns.

This is why you trade in a public place, in plain sight of others, like Macdonalds.

Indeed, I would only trade in person in a public place. The problem is, how the hell are you going to get 28k dollars in person in public? You need to count the money before taking it, and im not sure if it's a good idea that people see you counting a ton of cash while also cameras record you, and I doubt that you intend that money to get taxed otherwise you would just sell it in an exchange or something...

I have never bought bitcoins in person for this very reason. I am highly wary about revealing myself and even any bit of information about me. Although there really is not much of a choice for buying bitcoins for a cheaper price. This forum's currency exchange for other payment systems from reputed member's is my favorite way of buying bitcoins.

Bitcoin exchange based largely on trust and exchange at once with great value is still very worried

It never happened to me but one person borrowed about a small amount of bitcoin but he never paid.  I barely know him online and still we were friends as we have group chat.

I would never trust anyone if I do not know him that enough.  Maybe you could do the meetup on a place where there are many people.  But it is much better if you do it online and with have some median.  That guy who was stolen with $28000 have no idea of how bad some people are and maybe he do not have some trust issue.

i personally was never have experience buying bitcoin person to person because that was very risky especially such as you say that buy bitcoin with random stranger and i had still comfortable buying bitcoin using an exchange because it's more safe for my bitcoin

Depends on the situation. If you're gonna meetup at a coffee shop with plenty of foot traffic it's definitely low-risk. Still, IMO it's best to do meetup purchases like this in bitcoin related conventions or gatherings, if not online.

Yes, I too would always recommend doing this in a well populated area. Most people have good intentions but you should always be careful. I know there are some states that actually have mark areas for transactions like this. They have a security camera and are well lit too!

No, it has nothing to do with bitcoin's reputations because it is a silly mistake from a user. In my town they have little areas where you can exchange goods under a security camera. Often law enforcement will be patrolling around the area too. People must choose these kind of places only.

I agree this stuff has nothing to do about bitcoin but it is labeled crime of bitcoin since supposed to be bitcoin sales is involved. As for the safety, there are lots of online service that offers bitcoin to fiat money exchange.  It is safer to transact in this kind of set up in my opinion.

Go with a group a strong guys with you, that look nasty, and you'll be fine, no one will even think about robbing you !

You better buy/sell small amounts (like 500$ or less) instead of doing a 30k$ deal at once if you are doing it in person. You may reduce the risks of getting scammed but doing business with people more than 1 also raises the risks of getting scammed at least once. Hard to decide.

I think it is best to hold your bitcoins in your core wallet till you need them. And when you need them use an online exchange and run away without looking back as they can blow up at any time

In most case it is the avarice that makes people do stupid things and fall for scammers tricks.I am sure the guy was offered a low price by scammer and in his greed he didn't take all the precautions needed before dealing with anyone.
Buying bitcoin for such a huge amount should be done through reputable exchanges that to in batches

i also like to do it in person the most, even though it is not too private i still think that it is the best way to avoid any scams and thefts

Right, to avoid any problem you must set a place where there are many people that you can turn on to just incase or have someone that will accompany you in transactions you'll going to do. its better to be careful nowadays because you dont know what kind of person they are.
