tormail.org is just a non-working front anyway. The real tormail is only accessible from Tor.

It will be up again soon. Because it's run by russian secret service. No it is not. Owner made mistake registering .net domain in Russia due to USA seizing domains used for questionable activities. Then Russia seized the .net domain and asked for providing ID scans to nearest russian embassy. The owner refused and the domain was taken down. It was replaced by .org domain while dispute with international authorities were resolved about shady actions of russians. We all know that embassies are outposts for spy activity, especially USA and Russian ones. And the domain registrar in Russia had phone contact number in the same range as other government agencies, including FSB. This is how conspiracy theories are born. In fact Tormail is no less secure than any other e-mail provider even if it is run by FSB. Government agencies might ask for cooperation any other e-mail provider so it is not different if Tormail is run by FSB. But if it is not, Tormail is the safest in terms of government requests. Use GPG to encrypt every mail.

We know that... duh hehe Actually, tormail.org is up, and I can access the .onion site, but the mail database seem to be down.

I think this is the first outage I've noticed since I started using tormail, how long does it normally go on for?

I agree that using GPG is ideal but the average user's eyes glaze over if they have to go through extra steps to send emails. Broad adoption of GPG and its ilk is currently held back by convenience factors. It's still just a geek toy.
Sounds familiar - kinda like Bitcoin.

Has anyone been able to use tormail since last week? There seems to be a database error, you can get to the onion site, and attempt to log in, and then an error.

Sign up to privacybox.de, and upload your public GPG key. Now clueless people will be presented with a friendly text box they can write you messages with that are automatically encrypted with your own key. This is great for accepting MtGox codes and other financial vouchers. All tormail is doing is routing mail to their dirt cheap VPS relays server2.hudsonvalleyhost.com who use postfix to further relay the mail to a torrified exchange server. I'm sure with enough resources somebody could timing attack and find that server if they really wanted, which doesn't matter if you encrypted everything but we all know maybe 3% of users are using encryption all the time. You could set up your own private tormail like service with a VPS to run the exchange server or ssh torrified, and some sort of VPS on clearnet to send/receive the emails as a relay. Total cost: $9 vps + $9 relay, pay with bitcoins, configure everything through SSH/tor. Or just use this: https://www.awxcnx.de/mm-anon-email.htm

It gets complicated when you need to send emails to destinations on the broad internet.

BTW, which email service is better for anonymity and safety? Tormail or mail.i2p/i2pmail.org?
What's your choice of use?

Neither use bitmessage i2pmail is run by 'postmaster' who is known to suspend any accounts he feels like. Tormail is probably run by kids and if you you always use pgp should be fine except hardly anybody does, and it's most likely also collecting the times you access the server.

There's a message on the privacybox.de web site saying that they've reached "end of life" and are shutting down some time in the future.
