I've heard it's possible to fill this slot. Wouldn't the 2x channels be filled and reduce mining performance?

Say I bought a pci-e extender and cut it to fit in a pci-e 2x slot. Would I really have no problem running 3 cards? What if there was a 6990 in the pci-e 2x slot? Is anyone else using this method?

Thanks!

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Mining requires very little bandwidth. PCIe x1 is even more than sufficient. And you can just use PCIe x1 extenders for x2 x4 x16 slots.

the PCIe bandwidth has nothing to do with mining, you would be fine even on a 1x connection. In fact, a lot of guys do exactly that. It allows you to fit more cards onto a cheaper motherboard.

With the appropriate cables you should be fine.
