It`s not going to happen because of cheat-issues. You should make this tournament in a real life
Naah,I don't think it's because of cheating, you can also cheat on a tournament,it has to do more with how the BTC will be divided between the players
If there are more people willing to play such a game,it will exist
But hey,it first has to be made, right?

It is not possible to cheat in a real life tournament as there are judges watching. Many people in real life don't know about BTC so there isn't any chess tournament with BTC prizes. Playing online can be abused by using bots which will defeat the purpose of the tournament as everyone will simply use bots to play with one another.

As much as I would want that to be the case, I'm afraid, it is only a matter of time when somebody tries to use (or has already tried) some transmitting device (like Google glass or an eye implant of sorts) to get an advantage by stealthily using a bot in a chess tournament. Not so long ago an elite female cyclist got caught cheating by using a bike with an electric motor hidden in the bottom bracket and connected to an electric battery inside the seat tube.

What`s the problem to find people who use BTC and make tournament among them? You can make fair games only when you can see your opponent`s "eyes". End of story
P.S. Chess isn`t about money at all.

Could we not set a 3rd party site that would run for us bitcoiners that would allow us to play on Chess.com?
Have a escrow that both parties send to and lock in 1-5 games per a set amount. The program releases once games are finished. If the games do not all finish within agreed set time, the bets for unplayed get sent back.

Seems simple enough to set up,it would just be flying under the radar of Chess.com that would be the hard part.

It could be possible, yes, but I don't think that you will be sure on whether your opponent is just a bot or not. Anyone could make this platform but the question would be its legitimacy and its transparency to its peers that it's not using smart/intelligent bots just to get money from their users. I have always wanted to play chess online with rewards or bets, but I couldn't find any that seems to be legit PvP and not a PvE where the enemy is just a bot.

I wonder if chess.com would agree to such an idea, though it could be a nice implementation once it goes up and running. The thing is, I could use a program or a bot for me to win the game without anyone else verifying it. We could use a camera, yes, but I don't think bitcoiners would love that idea.

As much as I would want that to be the case, I'm afraid, it is only a matter of time when somebody tries to use (or has already tried) some transmitting device (like Google glass or an eye implant of sorts)

Back in about 2003 I played in a Chess tournament (live in person) and the top prize was £500; a huge amount of money for me at the time.  I was determined to win this prize at any cost but I wasn't really any good at chess. However that was minor issue for me as I had a plan.

At the time phones with a vibration alert were pretty new, so I just stuffed one up inside my ass and my friend sitting in the crowd was playing out the games on a little chess computer (many other spectators were doing similar).  Then he'd get the recommended move and keep phoning me and hanging up.   Obviously I couldn't answer the phone (since it was up my ass and probably smelled a bit funny too)... but we'd both been in the boy scouts and knew Morse Code and he was sending me the messages using that  Cool

Easiest £500 I ever made.
LOL, I do not know what to make of this story, in one way it’s hilarious and on the other… well is probably not a good idea to go there, but on a serious note, cheating at chess in a live tournament is nothing new, it has happened before and it will keep happening.

I am pretty sure he didn't do that but he copied that from a movie. Or from some other tournament. Seems like a lot of trouble to do for $500. Also the other player would hear the cell phone vibrate. Cell phone vibrates were crazy loud back then.

I played online chess a lot before, but I didn't have a clue about existence of this little cheats. How to win easily in chess, well thanks a lot for this nice advices. Now I understand why its hard to make some gambling out of this game. Its very easy to make a scam without any special program, just some good pro chess and that's it.
Maybe with timer there is a chance to solve this problem, who can watch game and in program if there is just couple seconds for that? Maybe we can make some tournament here, with fast timer, so there will be no possibilities for this kind of scams?

People will always find a way to cheat even if we played a 30 seconds game, I’m pretty sure that with enough time I could create a bot that will take the moves in the screen and then input those moves on the chess program and then do the opposite. So in my opinion there is no way around the problem with the cheaters.

Technically, you wouldn't even need to read moves off the screen, you could just analyze the incoming http traffic. On the flipping side, the problem with cheating could still be handled by analyzing the moves of the opponents. As I understand it, the same algorithm would make the same moves given the same position, so it can be guesstimated if one or both players are using bots. Unless the bots apply some fuzzy logic or self-training neural network when searching for the best move, of course.

Yeah you can do that too, but since I do not know how to do that I did not mention it, and about catching the cheaters the solution that you propose could work, but like always there are workarounds, for example there’s chess software that will analyze a position and give you a list of several movements that you could make in order of how strong the move is, the only thing to do next is that your bot selects randomly one of the top 5 moves.

I don't think that list exist or that list would be very small since not many parties know about bitcoin or see the benefit of bitcoin and would not accept it. For that gambling niche it is to early. But for gambling games there are plenty of alternatives.

P.S. Chess isn`t about money at all.
Any kind of internet competition even if you can see your opponent in a webcam can be easily rigged, he could have second monitor in front of him or someone who will tip him the movies.
There is no way that you can play chess over internet for money while being sure that people are being honest.

P.S. So winners of live Chess tournaments are not rewarded with any kind of prize?

yeah I don't think such exists because even for cash games, table top style is not that popular to place bets on so I don't think we'll have a chess or any table games for gambling or betting

It is actually great idea. It is something that bitcoin gambling is lacking at this moment. We have excessive amount of Dice sites, standard casino games and usual stuff.
But we lack board games and different ways to spent our coins. I only wish that it will be serious site. And of course we can't have Chess or checkers or similar games.

We only need board games where dice determine your luck.

Is there a list or table top style games like chess checkers and such that uses bitcoins that anyone could share?

I don't think that list exist or that list would be very small since not many parties know about bitcoin or see the benefit of bitcoin and would not accept it. For that gambling niche it is to early. But for gambling games there are plenty of alternatives.

yeah I don't think such exists because even for cash games, table top style is not that popular to place bets on so I don't think we'll have a chess or any table games for gambling or betting
While betting is not part of the game of chess, at least as we play it in its current form, betting on the outcome of the match should be no different than betting in any other sport.

I think there is a way to easily detect bot or any involvement of third party app in the game by observing the behaviour and the timing of it's next move. Just like on other online games. I hoped someone will develop this kind of game with a good security. Take note that the involvement of btc is just for adding excitement on the game.    Angry

It had long been thought that chess was an intellectual game revealing the power of human thought and intellect until it became abundantly clear that the game can be efficiently brute-forced, and our typical computers can easily smash even distinguished grandmasters. Personally, I never found anything intellectual about chess (whenever I lost it was primarily due to losing a piece out of lack of attention), but maybe I just couldn't play chess very well.

After humanity finally and decidedly lost chess to computers, the palm of supremacy was yielded to go, the ancient Chinese game, which is considered vastly more complex than chess (or intellectual, if you please). And what do you think? Humanity lost again! The computer program utilizing neural network algorithms, machine-learning techniques, and some other dark magic recently defeated one of the three top players in the world today. There is virtually no more classical board games left to lose, we've been bettered in all of them.

That's a good point Omegasun, people easily can run a side software to project moves and the all games gone...

I saw this thing too tee-rex, don't remember the name, you have to put the pieces and surround the opponent pieces, right? This game have a lot of possibilities... If I good remember, the human won 1 game but the bot won 2(or more). "AI" is amazing, can you imagine the future??  Shocked

The name of the game is go (pronounced in the same way as the verb), in Japan it is also known as igo. Yes, its aim is to surround more territory than your opponent.

Regarding chess and AI, Deep Blue, a specialized chess-playing computer developed by IBM which defeated a reigning chess champion (Garry Kasparov then), got its playing strength from hundreds of special purpose chess chips. It had been brute forcing around 200 million positions per second, and this record seems to be still unbroken. Modern chess-playing software, though capable of evaluating only a few dozen million positions per second, is more "clever" in a sense, due to heavy usage of heuristics.

Actually, guys, I've found that lichess.org hosts the "BitChess" games in which you play blitz/bullet games (short games) and compete for prizes paid in Bitcoin. This is actually feasible because I would think that most people who were planning to cheat would only be able to do so without such a short time limit, plus the fact that cheating would be more obvious in bullet chess - if they do a lot of wild moves (that are sourced from an algorithm) quickly and consistently, since you have a lot of blitz and bullet games to play.

Seriously, check it out if you're a fan of chess.
