To my knowledge, none of the addresses that I no longer have access to had any coins left in them. Yet, about a year before coming back I played with Bitcoin in 2010/11, I think and was not impressed at the time, those wallets may have had coins and I shudder to think how many.

That is hard too that we are going to identify the true statistics on on how many people are totally using bitcoins in the whole world.

Because if we are going to base the population of bitcoin users with different bitcoin wallet providers that is not going to be accurate because many have a lot of bitcoin wallets for their security.

The bitcoin community its currently growing, something that would occur over time and its happening slowly, but i dont believe we are already 2 milions, and if we are near those looks like we are just 100k active bitcoiners.

it difficult to get the correct numbers but 75% of bitcoin users should own an account on this forum and our total members here is about ~ 900 thousand so am confident we are less than 2million world over

For the sake of argument, lets say 50% of people have a Coinbase account (of all global users, mostly American's use Coinbase in great numbers).

Blockchain.info claims to have 6 million wallets on their App pages but their website says 9m, which doesn't help us much anyway as one person can have multiple wallets.

But lets just say the number of Bitcoin users is somewhere between Coinbase's 4 million users and Blockchain.info's 9 million wallets.

the Bitcoin wallet app has been downloaded between 1-5 million times:

That is a crazy hypothesis.

Maybe I could agree 75% of those who own 10 coins or more may have an account on this forum, and possibly 25% of all bitcoin users have an account on this forum, possibly.

.. but still, I am thinking that there are likely more than 4 million bitcoin users world wide, yet I am also thinking that there is likely still some fractional reserve type banking going on with some of the exchanges and some of the third party bitcoin custodians, and it is also difficult to get any kind of grasp regarding the severity of such fractional reserve practices, even though logically, we can recognize that such fractional reserve practices can be very profitable, so long as you do not get caught... and even if you get caught, the punishment may not be as great as the profits to sneakily engage in such practices.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  There is no such thing as "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

The numbers are really increasing everyday compared to earlier days. This is fully because of bitcoins benefits. This has reached every corner of the world. Many have this as their main job in their career. My prediction would be, at least minimum 100 to 200 users are joining everyday in this forum. Either they start up with a new account registering in this forum or buy an account to start with. Bitcoin has made many lives very happy and satisfying.

It seems that there should be some better data sources out there, and maybe with the passage of time, we are going to get some better ways of gauging this.

And, really the upside seems to be much greater than the downside.  Think about it.  We have likely less than (or maybe approaching) .01% of the total worlds population involved with BTC in some kind of way (likely a lot of them in very small ways), yet we have quite more than 1,000 times the hashing power of any combination of super computers dedicated to bitcoin's security.

Some folks may call such computing power inefficient, yet I consider such computing power dedication as a measure of considerable future growth potential.

If of all people in the world I think bitcoin users is less than 2 million. But an increasing number of users it was inevitable. Still a few people using bitcoin was evidenced from the adoption of bitcoin least in some areas and at least one who knows about bitcoin. That is reasonable because bitcoin is still new terhidung so its still in development. Perhaps the next few years bitcoin users grow more if progress rapidly.

It is impossible to know how many people have used bitcoin so far. So all of these researches are just speculations like any other individual speculation. Anyways it does not matter how many people use btc, what matter is the market cap and how mush it is rising

I think bitcoin users number are under 2 millions to 5 millions people who are using the bitcoins, But as we all know that no one can say perfectly about bitcoin users. But i believe that i am right, because now within 2 years bitcoin is going very well, and everyday the people know about it and like it and use it in different ways.
There is no certain amount of people who using bitcoin. May be blockchain can give the information about how many wallet are already created but a person can have so many wallet to keep the bitcoin, probably it is for reduce the chance of hacked. So we can not now the certain number of people who use bitcoin.

I agree with you that there may be more important questions, but the topic of the thread relates to speculating about number of users, and there are probably some better sources of information than others, but to suggest that the topic does not matter seems to be a bit lacking in perspective.

I think ascot 2 million people use bitcoin and it's not enough for a cryptocurrency to have this much less user. I think user will increase by 2020 because it's getting popular and those who hear about bitcoin  first time is my experience that i am saying about
