The guessing / wisdom of the crowd can usually predict the right answer. I think there is some actual research on this, something to do with guessing how many jelly beans there are in a jar. By removing outliers and averaging out the rest, people tend to get the right answer.

all of the above are right and wrong at the same time 

it is because you can never measure the number of people "using" bitcoin because it is decentralized, there is no bank to watch how many "people" are using it unless everybody come forward and identify themselves.

what all these statistics show is somehow related to bitcoin blockchain analysis so it is only showing how many addresses or transactions have been used.

besides I believe that majority of Indian users and many others are only using bitcoin as dust-money-earning through methods like using faucets so I wouldn't really count those.

I will pick the reasearchers opinion. Below 5m is ehat I see those 10m from blockchain could be 5 accounts for 1 user or let us just say 3 accounts per user. Consider also the registrees which just did it but didnt continue.

There isnt really a way to count accurately how many people are using bitcoins. Most of the data on the web is from surveys and other unreliable source so its not exact. About the india thing i really doubt 1 Million people use bitcoin, i am from india and there are really very less people who use know even less who even know about it.

India has one of the biggest populations in the world. They also have really crap banking infrastructure. I tried to do a project in India 10 years ago. The closest thing to banking infrastructure was the postal service, which is basically a network of poor couriers walking around villages.

Now with smart phones and increasing use of wifi, the banking system will find it can easily be overtaken by Bitcoin.

The middle classes of India alone have the potential to generate more Bitcoin users than the population of America. It will happen, soon (tm). Well, maybe.

The difference between Blockchain & Coinbase is regulation. A single person on Blockchain.info can have multiple accounts, without any

real problems, but on Coinbase they have to be verified to adhere to the KYC/AML regulations... so Coinbase in my opinion, would be a

more accurate figure, based on a specific region/country. This is not a easy task OP, because we cannot get accurate stats from the

sites.

and about India i have to say that i always though India was one of those countries that announced bitcoin as illegal but seeing this article in OP and also a quit google search seems like they are in fact using bitcoin a lot!

I think no one can knows the answer because 1 person usages many wallet and there is millions and millions of bitcoin address made till date but once can conduct survey and could make out a census but in real life is not possible to guess the exact number still right guess could be made. I don't buy china as the place with the most users.  The most mining and trading takes place but other than that they have no use for it there.

I'm sure it's up there but the US must have the most actual users when you take commerce and the quantity of services there.

You can't, too difficult for making tools for that, and you're just trying for calculating about the total of bitcoins is just like impossible things considering if someone is having more than 1 wallet for storing their money, and you're just able for calculating with the try for using a sample.

Could be. They love technology. Many smartphone app developer are Indian and also android hackers. 
Even with a small amount per Indian can make a blast in bitcoin economy if they do it in numbers. Imagine every single person in them having an amount of .1 btc, that is a lot for 5 million users.

If you look at the concentration of the nodes, it does indicate that North America have the highest amount of Bitcoin nodes, so if you extrapolate a ratio of nodes:users I would have to agree with you. The cheap internet and the availability of the infrastructure just make USA more conducive for Bitcoin adoption and use.

what Tanic says is most probably based on the trade volumes he sees. which shows China having the highest volumes every day but the reason for that is the fact that there are a lot of whales and traders and the fact that the trading fees are zero in the major Chinese exchanger called okcoin.

Its really going to be difficult to determine accurately the numbers of users even the estimate might not be accurate because of the major advantage of Bitcoin which is anonymity as your friend might be into bitcoin and you wont know, another is the environmental or say social factors surrounding its use in the sense that some people still see it as a currency used in the "underworld" which they are not really proud of. 2 million people seems to be too much if you ask me. Especially if their active. I guess the amount of active bitcoin users is perhaps in the ten of thousands. The amount of users that have or use bitcoin is somewhere in the 100.000. Perhaps 150.000. The amount of addresses is easily somewhere in millions and counting.

I would like to see some kind of poll that attempts to suss out what is meant by user, too.

So, for example, if the definition of a user is anyone who has at any time held more than .001 bitcoin and continues to hold at least .001 bitcoin, then that gives us a certain broad picture that is not really very well defined.

Some users may have several wallets and 100s of addresses, and surely, if some bitcoins are held on exchanges, then the number of users is somewhat difficult to suss out, because exchanges are not very forthright about how many users they have (even if they are fairly certain that some of their users are not the same person under a different guise).

I understand that it matters to some extent to differentiate between users and holders, yet I don't really see any reason to criticize folks merely because they are holders.  Holders likely become users the more that they hold onto the asset, and really holders do not hurt the bitcoin infrastructure, overall.

critics of bitcoin frequently attempt to denigrate holders further by calling them hoarders, yet in the end, it doesn't really matter if a whole lot of folks believe that there is some value in holding bitcoin for the longer term.. They do risk that the direction of the price may not go in their favor, yet bitcoin is certainly capable of handling such a matter with whatever coins are available, in terms of liquidity in the even that some folks may want to use bitcoin for the holding  and/or transfer of larger amounts of value.

What is the need to rush matters?  The amount of use and adoption is what it is, and many of us likely recognize that there is a considerable value in investing in bitcoin currently because the level of adoption remains so low, yet the utility and future potential of bitcoin remains so great - even under current circumstances and current developments.

Given that there can be no more than 7 million transactions per month, you can set upper bounds, depending on the average usage.

- So if an average user does one transaction per month, then there are less than 7 million users.
- If an average user does one transaction per week, then there are less than 1.6 million users.
- If an average user does one transaction per day, then there are less than 250,000 users.
- If an average user does five transactions per day, then there are less than 50,000 users.

I do about 4 tx per day. So if I'm an average Bitcoin user, there are about 63,000 users.

Some users may have several wallets and 100s of addresses, and surely, if some bitcoins are held on exchanges, then the number of users is somewhat difficult to suss out, because exchanges are not very forthright about how many users they have (even if they are fairly certain that some of their users are not the same person under a different guise).

I have once shown that you can get a pretty good estimate based on the information about wallets. Even when you don't know anything about the owner of the wallets, you can say a lot about the demographics by statistics. And you can estimate the number of users and the average amount of bitcoins owned.    

At the very least you will know the maximum amount of users Bitcoin can have.

for example todays market cap (according to CCMC) is just under $10 billion.
so assuming oh... lets say 2 million users, then each user has an average holding
of $10 billion divided by 2 million = $5000= 8btc+

I like the idea, but again, the problem is that I find very difficult to tell who the average user is because we do not know most people who do BTC transactions. We could ask people on this forum or at popular online wallet sites and calculate an average from their responses, maybe even check their responses, but will a huge enough amount of people tell us honestly about their transactions and let us trace them back? I do not think so.

If you cared enough you might want to start by eliminating the ones that don't.  It is another way of solving something like this.  Start with the overall population of the planet, I think about 6.5 billion and start getting rid of groups.  You can get rid of a bunch quick.  Most third world countries don't have the internet set up to handle something like Bitcoin, so chop those off with a little research, say a good 1.5 billion from those.  That puts you at 5 billion.  Age groups are easy, under 8 years old, maybe older, not likely trading and using Bitcoins, lol.  You get the idea, countries where it is illegal are out, maybe New Jersey, just playing.  Before too long you are at a much smaller number, just don't double dip.  If you took out the country of Belize at 1.8 million and then researched that there are 1 billions people in the world under 10 years old and subtracted that you would be taking out the Belize under ten group twice.  Or.................ask the government, they probably already know.

Although 1 million Indians have their bitcoin wallets, I read somewhere that there are around 10K+ active users who are using bitcoin regularly (probably short interval of time). Yes I believe there is huge potential for the growth of bitcoin in India because there are not good (and cheap) alternatives to send funds internationally. Paypal has restrictions so no one can send funds from paypal account (unless credit card linked with an account) so I prefer bitcoin over other payment options.

To my knowledge, none of the addresses that I no longer have access to had any coins left in them. Yet, about a year before coming back I played with Bitcoin in 2010/11, I think and was not impressed at the time, those wallets may have had coins and I shudder to think how many.

For the sake of argument, lets say 50% of people have a Coinbase account (of all global users, mostly American's use Coinbase in great numbers).



Blockchain.info claims to have 6 million wallets on their App pages but their website says 9m, which doesn't help us much anyway as one person can have multiple wallets.

The numbers are really increasing everyday compared to earlier days. This is fully because of bitcoins benefits. This has reached every corner of the world. Many have this as their main job in their career. My prediction would be, at least minimum 100 to 200 users are joining everyday in this forum. Either they start up with a new account registering in this forum or buy an account to start with. Bitcoin has made many lives very happy and satisfying.

It seems that there should be some better data sources out there, and maybe with the passage of time, we are going to get some better ways of gauging this.

And, really the upside seems to be much greater than the downside.  Think about it.  We have likely less than (or maybe approaching) .01% of the total worlds population involved with BTC in some kind of way (likely a lot of them in very small ways), yet we have quite more than 1,000 times the hashing power of any combination of super computers dedicated to bitcoin's security.

Some folks may call such computing power inefficient, yet I consider such computing power dedication as a measure of considerable future growth potential.

I do not think that the number of bitcoin users is big.
I would really be surprised if there are more than 5 million people out there who use it.
Bitcointalk.org has 890254 members (says the members section). I'm sure that there are many alt accounts included, but let's say 500000 people use this board.
When you start with bitcoin it's very likely that you open an account here.
If only 10% of all people who started with bitcoins has an account here, we would reach the 5 million users.
If the percentage is higher, the number of bitcoin users would drop.

There are 7 billions people in the whole world and I think the number of users that uses Bitcoin is just 1 million or even less.
- Half of the people doesn't want to know about Bitcoin.
- A lot of people thinks Bitcoin is a scam
- Some people just don't care about it

- People in the provinces have very limited access of the Internet (in my country, at least)

Honestly i don't think that anyone or someone will be able to know how many are the people who are using Bitcoin. By using Bitcoin you can be anonymous and a single user can use many Bitcoin addresses so this is really impossible to know the count of the users who uses Bitcoin.

Can you quote any sources that substantiate your claims or do you just happen to think so? I don't say that the chart I presented shows the real number of active users, but I don't think the number of transactions per day is doctored (since it is in the Blockchain after all) and differs significantly from active users. On the other hand, you give a figure which is almost tenfold that...

I think that is quite a telling figure and figure of speech.

It's the word 'served' that is the problem for Bitcoin. Coinbase are heavily regulated, especially their marketing materials, so what they say in static materials is not accidental.

They could have said:

* 4.6m customer accounts
* 4.6m loyal customers

But they didn't. This gives me the impression that they have chosen their words carefully and that they have served 4.6m different customers over their lifetime and mostly in the USA.

The question is: why were they not able to say 4.6m customers, when they have served 4.6m customers?

It looks to me like there were 4.6m that tried Bitcoin and a lot of them didn't stick around. Obviously, some people will have moved on from Coinbase because they didn't like their service. But my guess is that people try Bitcoin and then walk away.

I think I can give you a viable explanation why people have been walking away from Bitcoin in the Coinbase case, since I've been there myself (though I didn't walk away)

I got into Bitcoin thanks to a massive Coinbase advertising campaign which they ran in the fall of 2013. Basically, they had been giving away free 20k satoshi to every new customer of theirs. I guess many opened several accounts at Coinbase to get this amount x times they registered and then stuck to just one wallet having abandoned the rest. Further, the price started to get heavily pumped right at that time reaching ATH in November-December 2013, and some of Coinbase new users sold into this hype (or rather frenzy). When the price collapsed in the beginning of 2014, they might have become totally disappointed by their losses and decided to stay away from Bitcoin in the future

Even if it were 15 million worldwide, which it can't be, that's still sad considering Pokémon Go has 24 million unique daily users and it's just a game. The market cap for Bitcoin is only $10 billion. That's sad considering Walt Disneys cap is $147 billion and Coca Cola is $179 billion.

You are using wrong metrics. For example, you are looking at the age of the would-be Bitcoin users. This is wrong. I could claim that the older generation is irrelevant (though this doesn't sound quite right, I know) since they are no longer earning money and living off their pensions. In the same way, the 25 y.o. kids (lol) are irrelevant as well since they are not yet earning money and receive some sort of financial help from their parents. But in both groups there are individuals who earn quite handsome on their own. What does it tell us?

I am unable to predict it. But very sure, the strength is increasing ever minute. The moment BTC's benefits reaches a person, a registration happens here. This is the zeal towards earning BTC as only bitcoin's price is very high compared to other currencies. Its even convenient for all purposes and for all. By just looking around us, I don't think there's even 1 million bitcoin users in population. There are only 800,000 accounts registered in this forum. Removing the account farmers, dead or inactive accounts, and those people that have alt accounts, we can reduce the number into 100,000 or maybe even less. And what will this estimation tell us? In other words, what is the purpose of knowing the number of people holding bitcoins after all? And these statistics are easily obtainable since all required data is already in the blockchain...

Very true, stats are easily manipulated. Basic logic definitely is your best friend.  If you've ever mined bitcoin then you know the miners are paid out every day. I alone was a member of four different pools and received payments from them daily. If there are 25,000 people mining and each of them receives payments four times a day then there is 100,000 of the 250,000 daily transactions. In all likelihood, there are far fewer daily purchase transactions than anyone really wants to admit.

5M is way lot of users compared to what I'm thinking. I'm just thinking of around 2M. Because theres a lot of users that have multiple accounts and they are using it everyday. Thinking that its around 5M and the bitcoins price are now going up. I think the demand of bitcoins will go up too and the users will be doubled or tripled, as well as the account of a user will multiply. That's nature

We can just guess, at the moment there is no any relevant method to establish true number. Probably we will never know exact figures. My estimation is around 2 millions and I don't have the clue is it near correct number or not. New users are comming all the time but unfortunately some are leaving bitcoin too.

Yes that is a fact that we cannot estimate the actual number of bitcoin but we can evaluated the increase in number from our surrounding, as in my area people are joining bitcoin rapidly and one shopkeeper has also started bitcoin service as he is now accepting bitcoin for shopping in his shop, so we can guess that the number of bitcoin users is really increasing rapidly in every part of this world. One estimation may not last accurate for a single day too.

Advantages and disadvantages of bitcoin like as if it serves people needs is easy to find. But is very difficult and matters how many people around the world use it. Say that you go somewhere abroad with few fiat money in your pocket but with btcs in your smartphone wallet. So how will you satisfy your needs if there aren't people for services or goods to pay with bitcoins?

My gues is that a bitcoiner in general has around 1 btc and 1 wallet, so I voted for 16 million. However, I understand now that 1 btc per user is sort of not that big and the average amount is probably higher. But what to do with wallet's then? If there are less people using btc then they have more money and more then 1 wallet in general?

It is hard to tell how many people are using Bitcoin, and the wallet address that had been created is not accurate since one user can have hundreds to thousand of addresses.  In my opinion there is more than 5 million people who have bitcoins since MLM company are now using bitcoin as their bait to attract people to join their company but the people who use it in their daily lives is different story.  And I think there is only a small percentage of those who owns it use bitcoins.

Actually it is important to know how many millions of people used bitcoin since it was develop because it is the proof or evidence that people trust bitcoin. As bitcoin is anonymous system to use, we cannot speculate the number of users easily because we can see multiple wallets in one person's name and etc. I don't think op effort will be fulfilled by this thread

Yeah, exactly, it could be happened, but if we wanna guess than only that way is here to guess about the users of the bitcoin. But also as you said it is right, because everyone have many wallets and i think they have only one bitcoin, or may be they have half bitcoin or more than 1 bitcoin. Also i have many wallets but many time i have 10 to 12 bitcoins, which i bought them, and sometime i have no bitcoin. So as i said we can only guess it.

Your question actually is very hard to calculate the exact counting of bitcoin users, though we have already a total millions of members in bitcoin world.
Aside from that the history record in the blockchain is not enough to count it so far it is because there are many exchange sites that has made by now.

Yes you are right and we are not able to identify how many people are already using bitcoins. But base on what is happening with the bitcoins price, I guess it is now reached to 1 million users and this is only an estimation as there is no basis on how many are we already in the bitcoin economy. And with those statistics for bitcoin addresses it is not also a certified basis.

The IRS (the tax service in the US) has been said to be poking their nose in the Coinbase records in an effort to identify Bitcoin users. They required to provide the identities of the Coinbase clients for 2 years between December 31, 2013, and December 31, 2015. Coinbase itself claims that it has around 4.8 million users and 10.6 million wallets. If this story is set to be continued, we will likely learn how many people are actually using  this wallet or have used it in the past.

You can't distinguish between occasional users and regular gamblers and traders. There are allot of people who just use the BTC in international transactions because the ease of use it provides. So I guess the count is between 15-20 mil if you add all of them.

i think it is not so easy to estimate the actual number of bitcoin uses, but i think the number of bitcoin users is increasing continuously, and hope that very soon a large number of people will be able to get the benefit from bitcoin..

For your figure it don't mean every address have positive balance are control by different people... Even satoshi himself have a million coins in 50 BTC blocks, which stored in different addresses (about 20k). So that's why I think there's 1M people using BTC...

But I have two objections here. Firstly, the admin of this site counts btc holders taking under consideration their wallet exchange rate in usd dollars. Speculating the actual number of bitcoin users worldwide would be really hard since there are no actual tally or statistics regarding into this.They might give some numbers but its not accurate to consider but its really glad to know that bitcoin users are still increasing as the days goes by and the number will surely increase even more in near future.

5 to 15 Million of estimated amount of users seem like appropriate because we can see how the price of bitcoin grow higher and higher. One of the reason why bitcoin price goes up is because of demand and in terms of demand it needs a huge amount of buy orders or adoption which can result for getting the supply to become fewer than before and it reacts to the price. Bitcoin price hike is the result of the growing community of bitcoin users or investors and i think that it will grow even bigger after a few months if the price of bitcoin will go up to the moon.

All people in the world is surely going to be very difficult to do so, because in the bitcoin we didn't know anyone who uses it without them providing the information. For me it's really hard to predict how many user in this world who using bitcoin even now if theres an new technology that will count of bitcoin user then we can say how much people who uses it from the start and what is the maximum age who using bitcoin. I know the volume of user who using bitcoin is continuously growing fast.
