im reading up on all these forums and watching videos on how to set up mining rigs. a lot of people have been talking about setting up systems with multiple high end radeon cards such as the 290x etc...
but when they talk about the hash rate being achieved, its like 300-400 kilo hash /s (for each card).
They are most likely talking about litecoin (scrypt algo) hashing rate. https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparisonyet i did a test run on my laptop where my nvidia gtx660m card is achieving 40 mega hash/s on average.
why is my laptp achieving mh/s when these dedicated rigs are only achieving kh/s?
am i missing something? because im really confused here

you need to undervolt your GPU and tweak a little bit... you need to download, edit&modify, upload bios to drive down power consumption and rise performance!!!
Even with undervolt, overclocking, your hashrate will still be low. Cuda cores aren't optimized for openCL operations compared to steam cores which AMD uses. However, with the recent released GTX 980 and 970, their hashrates and electrical usage are slightly improved but for SHA256, the profitability is still negative due to the amount of ASICs on the market right now. For altcoins, there MIGHT be bits of profit but the profit would still be small

Nvidia sucks on their previous chip architecture for mining but after the introduction of Maxwell architecture, the performance have improved greatly on the power used per mh.

sure!!! bitcoin price it is for sure another variable to add to get the right date on ROI ... but price it is not sure... so.. if one of the variable is not sure... the result is not sure!! and the ROI go far and much more far!!!!

AMD is way better, if you really want to mine you should sell the card and then get an AMD one and use cgminer. If not, cudaminer is your friend but I dont expect much at this point.
