Mp4 is a container - it's not a video encoding standard - MP4 is the most recognized standard formats for containing video today. There is currently no replacement. Other containers are .mkv, .mov, .ts, .m2ts, etc. Within Mp4 can be a H.264 encoded video which we use as standard (including most of the world, and is supported as part of the HTML5 spec). Any issues with playing MP4 videos are typically related to the encoded file within that container. We will eventually use H.265 but we're concerned not all players support H.265.

Do you have any recommendations regarding video containers that have replaced MP4? (For instance, MKV would be a good container, but it is not natively supported in HTML5, and not directly supported by many vendors).
